A nightmare in the making?
16 Feb. - Won the battle of
Akhaltsikhe we had 445 killed to Soviet dead of 356
- General Eldelhun attacked from Agri into Akhta for the second time. His forces against Soviet General Korshilov are supported by 5th Mtn. by a flanking attack from Artik.
17 Feb. - The next day after the victory in Akhaltsikhe Russian General Bonderev is leading a fresh division of Mtn. troops in a counter attack against our tired Turks of 6th Mtn. This fighting in the mountains is a fierce struggle between like troops.
- Turkish General Karabekir began his attack on Akhalkalaki sending a tired corps with a fresh 1st Cav. coming in as reserve against a single Soviet Mtn. division led by General Odintsov.
18 Feb. - We received news that Akhta is close to falling into our hands. This is a welcome news, for this previous battle was lost at the start of the war.
- Now that we have the airfield in Kobuleti, General Hitay brought his Tacs forward and began bombing Russian units behind the front, in hope of weakening those fresh units.
19 Feb. Today the good news came that
Akhta is in Turkish hands. Losses were heavy on both sides. Ours 626 killed, their dead 720.
- More good news came over the wire;
Romania joined the Axis.
Now if we can only get Yugoslavia on board, all the Balkans will be in the Axis.
20 Feb. - General Karabekir won the battle for
Akhalkalaki with 464 dead versus 660 Russians killed in the action.
- Unwelcome news today. A well-equipped Soviet Arm. division led by General Afanasiev was seen advancing behind the western front. Hatay and his Tacs caught up with the Russian mobile division at Zetaponi. We hope he shreds those tanks but it looks like only minor damage is done. These units are priority, we have nothing to equal these enemy divisions.
23 Feb. - General Orbay took 3rd Mtn. and 5th Cav. and attacked The Soviet 37th Inf. Division in Ljevan. The defenders are led by Soviet General Pliev.
- Soviet forces are building in Gori, so Tac-wing commander Hitay made bombing runs over the province in an attempt to soften what appears to be a growing stronghold. Reports came in that three Mtn. divisions and two Cav. divisions all well-rested are camped there and preparing to counterattack our lines.
25 Feb. - We received bad news this morning from
Ljevan. Orbay had to halt his attack because his forces ran out of supply. Even worse news followed; once again our losses were much more than what the Soviets are experiencing by their defensive postures across the front. In this battle we lost 471 men to their 211. Turkey cannot afford these losses while the Russian forces receive a steady supply of units moving into the area. Two days later Orbay’s worn-out soldiers holding Kirovakan come under counterattack.
02 March - General Orbay loses
Kirovakan and another 258 men while Russian dead is 306. Orbay’s retreat is a rout and instead of pulling back into Artik they foolishly move into Bogdanovka, instead of joining the Turk Mtn. division holding the line at Artik.
-General Hitay is ordered to have his Tacs strike the soviet division in Ljevan in an effort to prevent their advance into Kirovakan.
Very Bad News
Reports come in from several provinces along the border that Soviet Armor and motorized infantry units are arriving in greater numbers. Our intelligence is that we now face at least 5 armored divisions and 4 motor-units. This is very grave news. We only have one light-armor and motorized division with no prospect for building more any time soon. Even if we buy more production-licenses, our practical’s are so terrible that we would not have one new brigade for many months.
The situation is made even worse because our Cavalry units have became almost worthless, Their attack has been all that we could improve and yet it is “now” proving insufficient in gaining ground in the mountains. The Cav units are terrible at defending ground and anytime we've asked them to hold, they are easily driven out.
A Dangerous Time
Field Marshall Calistar is desperately working at finding a way to halt the reversal that has developed. However, what can he do when Russia can easily move many divisions of armor into the war-zone while we sustain heavy losses as we try to advance across rivers? i.e. We want to take Tbilisi but the mountainous push into the city is made worse by the river. Once again, we can expect horrible Turkish losses "when and if" we can take the important city and its airbase. Thankfully we’ve seen no Russian planes there yet. If that happens we will be forced to use the small Kobuleti air-strip for basing both our Tacs and Ints; ftr, Turkey has not a single air-base of its own in the east of the country.
- We completed
Militia Support Weapons and started
Elastic Defense, which is long overdue. All research thus far has been trying to improve our offense, now we must focus on defending ground better.
06 Mar. - Hitay’s Tacs keep hitting the Armor division heading for Luxemburg. It looks like the Russian tanks will make it there with minimal damage, which is very frustrating because we’ve been pounding this unit as it has moved through four provinces on its way to oppose our now very weak Turk Cavalry.
- A note about the difficulty of the terrain; we took the province of Akhta on 19 Feb. and it took till today for our Larm division to arrive and occupy the city. Movement on our front is atrocious. That’s two weeks to cross the border.
12 Mar. - Hitay continues to try and damage the Russian armor (with armored cars) but it appears our Tacs can do little. But we've kept him assaulting the units and I sent General Muzir and three Cav brigades and 2 Mil in support against the newly arrived 12 Tankovaya Armor division commanded by General Kotlyarov. Russian General Krasnopevtsev is supporting the Arm-division that we are attacking with a single Soviet Mtn. division from Gori.
13 Mar. Hitay continued his strikes against Luxemburg.
14 Mar. Reports came in that Muzir’s
1st Cav. is in retreat. Two days later, on the 16th the
2 Mil brigades supporting the attack, retreated.
17 Mar. - Fighting is raging all along the front. We win the bloody battle of
Bogdanovka losing 839 men while the soviets lost 780.
- 2nd Mtn. attacks into Bakuriani.
- 3 Soviet divisions, one Arm, 1 Mot and a Inf. division attacked General Artunkal’s lone Inf. in Macharadse.
- General Ozalp led his 3 Mtn. divisions against an Arm. division in Zestaponi. They’ve just arrived, he hopes to drive them off before they can dig-in behind the river.
- General Gurler’s Mtn. division crosses the river against Ryzhow’s Mtn. division in Khashuri
-Turk 2nd Mtn. attacked Russia's 138 Mtn. in Bakuriani
- We win the short battle of
Zestaponi losing 87 to 96.
17 Mar, Hitay continues his strikes against Armored targets.
18 Mar. - We lose the Battle of
Macharadse with heavy losses, the Soviet tanks are rolling over my men. 814 dead compared to 285.
19 Mar. - We finish
Light Artillery and go to
Infantry warfare.
- Right after the Soviets enter Macharadse, we lost the fight for
Bakuriani. With 471 dead while the enemy only lost 135. Damn rivers! Moments later; We get the news we failed to take
Khashuri as well, 440 lost against 171.
-We began a counter attack in Macharadse, our captured soviet airbase is next door; we need to drive the enemy armor out but can we? The Soviets counter our move by attacking
Kubuleti but they soon call it off; we lose 9 they 32.
- Russian General Baggramiar is commanding the tanks in Macharadse, he also has a Mot-brigade, engineers and an armored car unit as support brigades. We have no comparable units.
Here is a screen showing the unwelcome Soviet arrivals into the war-zone.
Here is General Hitay's "to-do-list"
Here are screens from all the fronts to give you the picture at the moment of how the Axis-minors are fairing against the S.U.
Unfortunately Finland is seeing lots of tanks too. Helsinki has already fallen.
Italy just cannot do anything right. All the ground they won is lost. That must be some super-unit the Brits have.
Romania and Hungary are doing something I guess. Not exactly inspirational though.
Japan is looking good. Things will change once the U.S. joins the fight. But we have some time yet, so this helps Germany to some degree. Too bad the rest of us are doing so poorly.
