Hi all,

I thought I'd throw this out there, and maybe a dev will see it and make a comment. I am wondering about how these space empires will be named, and hoping it will follow something similar to Victoria 2: the name changes based upon what kind of government you have. I would imagine it would also go hand in hand with what kind of species you are: for example, if you're some kind of insect you might be the "Insect Hive" or "Collective" or whatever, rather than "Insect Kingdom".

I think I remember seeing in one of the interviews that one of the inspirations for this is Asimov's "Foundation" series, which gives a great example. The founding planet of the Galactic Empire was Trantor. In the prequel series to the actual Foundation books (which really didn't have much to do with the Foundation, they just happened to take place in the same universe), Trantor, as it gains more territory and influence goes from the Trantorian Federation, to the Kingdom of Trantor, to the Trantorian Empire, and then to the Galactic Empire.

So, perhaps size might factor into what something is called also.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

I would like to see this as well, it would feel weird if the naming conventions didn't match up with the various political entities of the galaxy. On this note, ensuring that the names of characters in game are interesting and fit their culture/species as well would be nice. I would hate to see "Larry" the Reptilian Scientist flying around in his ship serving the "South Dakotan Empire" which is actually only one planet in size (although it would be sort of funny).

We are talking about insects that are capable of FTL space travel. Just because humans are mammals, we don't call our empires "Human Forest" or "Human Cave"

Space empire names are generated depending on government type... so names like "empire" or "dominon" will be used by autocratic nations. Players are of course free to name their empires whatever they choose, regardless of government.

So I can call myself "Pantless" but if I become autocratic it will be "Pantsless Dominion"?

I think what he was saying was that AI nations names are dynamically named. IE depdning on there government but Human names are just whatever the human wants it to be. So if you call yourself "pantless".... that's is, that is the name of your government. I imagine the game will allow players to change there governments name throughout.

I believe the most important part about this post is the confirmation of "The Things of TinyWiking" as a civilization.

He referred to Hive as to hive mind I guess, but space insects with hive mind is so tired overused cliche I wouldn't like to see it anyway :D

My first play through ( to the best of my ability) will be a human internet/digital hivemind civilization. The goal is to expand and turn outgroups/unfriendly aliens into drones while assimilating friendly outgroups to reach consensus with(bring them into the hivemind). I'm thinking about doing an AAR.

any chance of a tick-box asking if you want the name to change (possibly detecting words like empire.) so if you have a nation like galactic republic and it is a monarchy it does not make sense.

Many monarchies pretended to be republics and many republics were de facto monarchies. If you are making custom name, you should change it to fit the realm.
It would be a waste of resources to implement such feature (word detection may not work in other languages).

I hope there will be some phenotype-specific governments or unique government types, so an Insectoid Hive or an Avian Flock might appear...

Humans should be able to have hives.
