Greetings Paradoxians! This is a thread for a total conversion to a map of a feudal Mars setting. In it, variety of new and old cultures vie for control of the red planet. There is a currently on going thread about possible features, which you can find here.

So, what happened? In the twenty-fourth century Earth faced massive issues. Its environment was crashing hard, people died left and right from a new plague, and revolutions threatened the social order. With raising sea levels, the United Nations faced no choice but to find a new home for the population of twelve billion. Within fifty years, the first few lunar colonies were established. Earth, however, continued to be overwhelmed by its oceans. The moon was already reaching its carrying capacity as well, so the next solution was Mars. The Earthern governments collaborated to set up a small mining settlement in the rings of Saturn, sending the iceballs for Mars to create liquid water. This combined with various electrolysis plants releasing oxygen Started to transform the Martian landscape. As everything seemed it was on track, a secretive organization tried to bring around their doomsday by flinging the rocks back into Earth. The already expanding Waters forced much more people onto the refugee crafts than planned, and tensions broke out on the flight to the Red planet. These starving, defeated people were surprised to arrive on Mars only to be greeted by the Russian colony of Soroz Gorodova. This fledgling city fostered a great friendship between themselves and the refugees, although some were skeptical and moved further into the wastelands to escape civilization. After ten years, Earth was finally able to send another ship to help the Martians. When they saw that the newly arrived refugees had eaten most of the food supply, the Martians declared themselves to be no longer subservient to Earth. The UN tried to keep the angry people under control, but disaster struck. The terraforming efforts had warmed up the lava which remained in the mantle, and Olympus Mons erupted in a fire of death and destruction. Ash covered the sky, killing most of the measly plants growing and forcing the people underground. Most of what remained of Earth gave up the colony for dead, leading to the first bookmark.

Governments
---------------------------------------------------
  • UN - A unique government for the United Nationals. They can call levies, extract taxes, and appoint UN Representatives
  • League of States - A unique government for the Leaguers. Very much opposed to the overbearing United Nations, the Leaguers can call vassals to war as allies but cannot extract a tax
  • Independents - To represent the small, almost tribal, Martian societies. Most follow a cult religion
  • Nomadic - Mostly for break slave states, Nomads wander around the red Wasteland without permanent homes
  • Federal - Basic governments for most of the countries in the center of the map, same as base game
  • Theological - For heads of religions
  • Trading Company - A playable semi-republic government based on the ones set up by the old British Empire. They are one of the only two that can hold trade posts. They're set up by a leader
  • Corporation - Remnants of the Western entrepreneurial spirit, these governments came to Mars in the beginning of colonization to profit off the refugees. They now use many of their 'customers' as a source of slave labor

Religions
---------------------------------------------------
This section is very fluid right now and there's no definite decision, but here is the rough list put together on the other thread.

  • Chalcedonain - In the year 2356, Pope Constantine reached an agreement with Patriarch Tikon of the Russian Orthodox Church in which they would try and mend their differences. Despite the Russian Church having fewer adherents than ever, it was seen as a massive evolution in Christianity. Soon the Ecumenical Patriarch even agreed to allow Catholic services in Greek churches. The final divisions were struck down fifty years later when two brothers were elected to both offices, merging the churches completely.
  • Stellarums - Many of the Catholic population was unable to believe that God had truly abandoned them to Mars, and believed that the Second Coming was just around the corner. Early on in its formation the First Pope Estella stepped up. She convinced the former Catholics to follow her and told of visions from Jesus himself. She became the first Pope Stellarum, a tradition which has lead to the modern day.
  • Protestantism - After hundreds of years of separation from the Catholic Church, Protestantism has truly come into its own. No longer ruled by the stern voice of a Pope or Patriarch, the Protestants of Mars turned inward. The Eruption led to a deep spiritual awakening, and many committed themselves to Monastery life to better interpret the bible.
  • Rosmarstserkov- A possible continuation of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Rosmarstserkov (Church of Mars) can come to be if the second Schism occurs. Its Patriarchs have been set up in the five capitals of each original colonial site in the hope of bringing the major players into the faith.
  • Sovite - Remnants of a by-gone communist era, these historical revisionists see themselves as a continuation of the old Russian Orthodox Church. Maintaining many of the old practices, they distance themselves from the new Chalcedonains by including old dictators such as Lenin and Mao Ze Dong as saintly heroes.

After the turmoil of the 21st century, the Middle East, with help from other countries, was able to become fairly successful - while life there wasn't the most luxurious, most terrorism had been eradicated and cities like Baghdad and Dubai became popular tourist destinations. As a coming of age ceremony, each Muslim is given a compass which is said to point towards Earth (and therefore Mecca) at all times.
  • Islam - A new from of Islam came to be back on Earth even before Colonization, which westernized it extremely. The prestige of having many wives has greatly declined, but some still choose to continue the old practice. Some of the even more progressive countries opened up to the possibility of female rulers, but it never happened. The differences between Sunni and Shia have been severely broken down, but one may choose to lean more towards one side or the other. There is also an option to choose African Islam for certain cultures, which is infused with many ancient mythologies. The Caliph can still call great Jihads. Decadence has been removed from this form.
  • Wahhabism - Much more similar to old Islam, Fundamentalism refuses all rule of women and encourage to take as many wives as possible. It is practiced mainly by the Saudi Caliphate
Judaism is an ancient faith, having followers since the days of ancient Egypt & Babylon on Earth. This has not changed after the Cataclysm, and there are still followers of Judaism on Mars. However, at the beginning of the game, Judaism is in a very similar situation to it's situation at the beginning of vanilla; there are only one or two small Jewish countries, however Christians, Atheists, and Muslims can gain Jewish courtiers like in vanilla.
  • Judaism - The only faith in the Jewish religion group, Judaism is essentially the same as in vanilla - a new nation called New Israel (any better names would be great) may be formed, and when it is the religious head, the Kohen Gadol, is elected, who may call for Great Holy Wars. Jewish characters in control of New Israel may also build the Fourth Temple.
The Persian group is both new and old, containing the ancient Zoroastrianism and the nineteenth century Abrahamic religion Bahá'í.
  • Bahá'í - The only faith in the Bahá'í religion group, Bahá'í focuses on the equality and acceptance of others and their religions, leading to some odd practices. They are allowed to Buddhist holy wars if one is cynical, can use absolute cognatic laws, is able to hold a massive Nineteen Day Feast yearly
  • Zoroastrianism - A revived interest in this old religion during the twenty-first century led to unprecedented growth, growing to even rival Islam in Iran. Despite multiple attempts to controls its growth, Zoroastrianism even expanded to other nearby countries. It contains many of the old traits such as a dualistic view of the world.
Countries such as China, Japan, & India were able to colonize Mars, and the native religions of the countries were able to spread on Mars. Now, it is similar to the Dharmic faiths of vanilla India; they may intermarry, change religions within their group, there are castes, and instead of heresies there are sects. However, the religions are a bit more divided here - each religion has a religious head who cannot convert to other Eastern religions (nor can priests). The religious heads may call for Great Holy Wars against people of other religions unless they are in the same religion group.
  • Hinduism - Hinduism, as the mainstream religion of India, quickly took root on Mars when India began colonization. For the most part, it is the vanilla religion - Hindus may hold a Diwali festival, and there are the regular religious sects - Smartism, Shaktism, Shavism, and Vashnavism. However, the Hindu faith also has a religious head - the Dharma Ka Sira (literally head of religion in Hindi) who can call for Great Holy Wars against non-Eastern religions.
  • Buddhism - Having a presence in most eastern countries (as well as many western nations), Buddhism quickly spread on Mars. There are three sects - Vajrayana, Mahayana, and Theravada, and Buddhists may host a Diwali festival (as well as most other vanilla features). Their religious head, the Dalai Lama, may call for Great Holy Wars against non-Eastern religions.
  • Sikhism - Sikhism is a smaller Eastern religion; originating in the Punjab region of India, Sikhism is a monotheistic belief that heavily venerates the gurus. Sikhs may host Diwali, choose a patron guru as opposed to a patron deity, and they can reconstruct the Harimandir Sahib/Golden Temple. Their religious head is the Guru, who may call for Great Holy Wars. (Not sure about sects for Sikhism)
  • Confucianism - Confucianism has been the mainstream religion of China since the teachings of Confucius, however mainstream Confucianism today originated during the Tang dynasty. Confucians may choose one of three sects - Confucian (could use a better name), Taoist, and Shenist; they may also choose two schools of thought similarly to Islam, Cheng-Zu & Lu-Wang. The head of religion, the Zongjiao (Mandarin for religion), may call for Great Holy Wars.
The UN brought with it the European secularism of the Old World when it set up the refugee colony of Mars. These ideologies still reflect the ancient beliefs of Earth, but also the connectivity of Humanity
  • Humanist - Most commonly found in the United Nations, most Humanist do not hold themselves to a certain god and dedicate themselves to better Humanity. While they strive for a secular government, they are normally bad at conversion. Most Humanists can choose a trait which reflects their ancestor's beliefs, and will if free from the UN's yoke, they can revert to that religion.
  • Transhumanist - An old remnant of the Super Soldier program, Transhumanist clash with the UN Humanism on many issues. Prone to eugenics and conflict, the Transhumanists believe artificial augmentation is the next step of human evolution, and those not with them are against them.
New Age and Pagan religions have taken foot on Mars; most of them are descended from neo-pagan movements on Earth, but there are also new religions based on Mars & the Old Earth. When reformed, all pagan faiths gain Great Holy Wars.
  • Wicca - This is mostly from the Wiccan belief from Earth, believing in a dualistic faith of the Moon Goddess & the Horned God involving the practice of magic. Most priests are mystics (sometimes with old technology), and when reformed there are two religious heads - one male and one female. They represent the two moons of Mars. There are three minor heads who assist in provincial religious questions.
  • Terran - Terrans are fascinated by Old Earth artifacts, believing they are the products of ancient gods. Terrans may visit ruins from the old colonies (like a pilgrimage), and they may also go on an archaeological dig, giving them piety & potentially a piece of old technology. It is considered highly impious, however, to remove these artifacts. The Terrans believe that Earth and Mars' pasts are closely intertwined and must be kept the same for when the two meet again.
  • The Living Force - An odd religion more similar to a philosophy, The Living Force preaches the connections between all life. Their priests, known as Masters, venerate The Light, and live by a strict moral code to ward of The Dark
  • Andamanese - An ancient religion of the Andamanese people, its followers believe that the universe is compiled of many layers. They believe that the spirits of their ancestors still inhabit the world as formless, smell-absorbing spirits who live within nature.
  • Dreamtime - The Aboriginal people of Australia carried with them the tradition of Dreamtime, a religion stretching back far into the past. The Aborigines believe that in The Dreaming, all of ones ancestors exist as one. In this realm, life begins and ends. All across it and the physical world, ancient heroes are believed to have established sacred sites known as songlines.
The Martian religions are unique in their founding location, causing them to feel bonds of fellowship... for the most part.
  • Olympian - This religion is the worship of the volcano Olympus Mons. A few Greco-Roman deities are believed in (such as Ares & Pluto). Olympians may go on pilgrimage to Olympus Mons, which is where the religion is mostly located.
  • Nasan - Shortly after the eruption of Olympus Mons, a group of people attempted to bury themselves deep into the ground so they might avoid the ashes. While digging, they found the NASA. What was once an old Martian rover, they regarded it as a heavenly messenger as it activated and began to talk to them. Soon this group of superstitious people began to follow all of the commands sent by this messenger, and secluded themselves from society to become an underground society. Many of the border cities live in constant fear of Nasans as they will commonly build underground tunnels to raid a city. Their lord Commander will often give orders to raid and pillage.
  • Children of the Stars - The Children of the Stars believe that everything that has, is and will ever exist(ed) comes from Star Dust. Created billions of years ago, they search for a way of the constrictions of planets and to make the final journey back home.
  • Cydonian - From up high on a mountain, the first Cydoinan looked upon a martian valley and noticed how it look disturbingly similar to a face. Every day for five years, the first Cydonian would come back to worship the face as God itself. On the final day, God told him to come into the valley with his friends and family so that they may wait out they apocalypse. Now there for seven generations, they do everything possible to help that apocalypse along. Due to the confined space, rumors suggest that many have even turned to incestuous relationships to keep the population large.
  • The Cult of Mars - A savage cult that worships the fierce war god Mars. They believe that the planet Mars is an afterlife, and that they are being rewarded for their valour in their past life. They seek to transform Mars into a realm of never ending battle and revelry, and seek to destroy all those who would corrupt the purity of Mars with their false doctrines of morality and restraint. The religion is also quite misogynistic, as they see Mars as heaven for good men and hell for wicked women, whilst subsequently Venus is heaven for good women and hell for wicked men. They believe in a form of reincarnation where people live on Earth, and after they die are reborn on either Mars or Venus according to their deeds and gender. After a person dies on Mars they are reborn on Earth where the cycle repeats itself. They're basically Martian warboys, and the religion was probably created by a warlord. In terms of gameplay they get all of the looting and warmongering, plus concubines and they're stuck on agnatic succession.
  • The Athenian Cult - A heretical offshoot of the Mars cult identical to them in every way, except for the fact that they deny the existence of Venus, and worship Athena as the equal of Mars. As such they embrace a more equal opportunities approach to slaughter and mayhem, seeing Mars as a Valhalla for all. In terms of gameplay, identical to the Mars cult, except they have cognatic succession and no concubines.
  • Souls - In a mythology similar to Christianity, the Virgins believe that a woman named Lora who was visited by a godly messenger, who told her to visit the nearby lake and bathe their. When she did, Lora was set upon by an evil demonic figure. She was saved by a lowly, unnamed peasant who fought off the demon. Despite only courting him, she grew pregnant. On the day of the birth, Lora pushed forward a great carved stone. The peasant revealed himself to be an ancient God, and told her that the Stone held the soul of all Humanity inside. This stone is currently watched over by the Greatest Priest, who ensures its safe keeping until the ancient God returns.

I can help with the map. Other things too, if necessary, but my prior experience is with map modding.
Thank you very much! I was thinking we could maybe try the bottom-to-last one, as everyone liked it the most. I will try and make a rough draw up of certain areas tonight and see if I can send it to you.

Sure thing. I'll work on trying to get that raw MOLA data in a CK2-usable form. Might be busy for the next few days, though. Feel free to PM me if you want to coordinate on Steam or elsewhere.

Heya guys! Not Quite a Dev Diary but I have a few things to tell you. One, here's the rough religious map. I didn't include everything, but you get the idea.
28p5eAm.png

Also, there's a part from the other thread I wanted to talk to you about. Each kingdom or empire level country will have the ability to set up a vassal trading company similar to the East Indian Trading company of Britain. These companies are the ones able to set up trade routes, and you get a cut of their check every year. They are considered to be mercenaries, so you can make decisions on whether to expand their power and have them fight for you and the trade lines. Be warned though, as they can become very dangerous and possibly try and replace you as ruler!

Ninja Edit: In the picture Martian Cults and the Cult of Mars ARE DIFFERENT. I just categorized a bunch of the small Martian religions under Martian Cults for viewing ease.

Here's a culture map I made up. Please note its a bit simplified, any suggestions?

EDIT: Here's a mock up of some of the ethnicities. Not every culture will be set to one color, but a few of the more cut-off ones will. Other than that, I'll try and use something like the AtE system to disperse it.

Islam seems too perfect so to speak. If you want something different from the current Islam, maybe have the split be between old way Islam (today's brand) and one that arose from Mars. The old ways one would be similar to vanilla Islam and they could reject the idea of a mecca being on Mars and such. you could also have Shiite and Sunni traits that effect opinions within the religion. The new ways would be more egalitarian with a mecca and hajj on mars, but also a strong belief that everyone on Mars should prescribe to it.

Similar with Catholicism. Something I thought of would be the split being between Christians that prescribed to a Pope on Earth and would actually not have a Head of Religion but instead have patriarchs and even have a belief that Mars is punishment for sins.Opposed would be a new heresy Mars Church with a mars Pope, maybe they would believe that humans on mars were saved by a new messiah (or returned jesus).

I also think the Atheists getting scientists is a bit "preachy". Maybe scientists could take the role of Jews in vanilla and are people who show up in your court with crazy high learning and stewardship but preach rather heretical views. Maybe Atheists and Communists can be less inclined to be angry at them.

I think more cultures should be unique mixtures of Earth cultures, like Olympian, especially in the north and south-east, where people have also abandoned traditional religions.

That sounds like a good point in my opinion.

I think the people out in the desert would have developed distinct ways of life and cultures, at least compared with the northern coastal regions, which I imagine would be more settled and civilised. I can see the Northern and Eastern parts retaining more of the old cultures, whilst the Southern and Western developing more "Martian" cultures.

Also it might be a good idea to give the Kurdish regions some Communist hotspots, given how integral revolutionary left-wing ideas have been to Kurdish nationalism over the years (and in my opinion its more realistic than turning the Russians into Communists).

You should divide European cultures in, at the very least, Italian, Spanish, Greek, German, French and British. At least.
Also, what's the point of a Taiwanese culture when all Taiwanese are Chinese?
I'd also suggest to rename Persian culture into Iranian one and implement a few non-Persian-but-still-Iranian elements.

Uh look, I can post again.

I think it's somewhat unlikely that the Kurdish regions would be adjacent to the Turkish ones, given the historical unpleasantness between them. Ditto the Mandarin and Chinese.

Furthermore, we need a War of the Worlds inspired religion.

Macptserkov - Russian Orthodox Church, but on Mars. Maybe go full stereotype and have some Communism mixed up in all that.

What is Macptserkov supposed to mean? It does not make a lot of sense in Russian. Well, tserkov makes sense, but Macp does not and the whole world is plain impossible to pronounce.

And yes, you should totally make Cossacks its holy order.

Wow, this is alot to go through. Thanks for showing so much interest guys!

Those portraits are awesome.
is recolouring Mongol portraits allowed? not sure how stuff like that works with the DLC touched stuff

Thanks! They were actually really easy to put together. There will be an option to use DLC facepacks too, to replace just European and Arab

That makes sense, I want to remind everyone that the religion section is currently very fluid. I like all of your ideas, so I think I'll include them.

I think more cultures should be unique mixtures of Earth cultures, like Olympian, especially in the north and south-east, where people have also abandoned traditional religions.

Yeah I totally agree. I looked back over the map today and realized I should do something about it. There will be some added melting pot cultures and some names will change. Also, this kinda ties into your point. The regions that are more 'civilized' and have held onto the Earthen religions and cultures will have very straight edged and square provinces while more fringe societies get kinda crazy in shapes and sizes. I had this idea about having provinces being named largely after Earthern areas as well, like most counties in American regions being named after states?

As long as we keep the obviously vastly superior Aussie culture. :p

Well if we include the 'superior' culture, than we have to include the culture that even beats out them too! /joke

I think the people out in the desert would have developed distinct ways of life and cultures, at least compared with the northern coastal regions, which I imagine would be more settled and civilised. This has actually been switched to Communist Mandarin (Mainland Chinese), Russians will have some kind of Socialism. Maybe the Kurdish region could be three duchies, the capital one being Muslim and the other two being communist.

The thing about European cultures and all, I do plan on dividing them. I'm just waiting until I finish up the province map to divide them up in the UN so I left it as just European. Maybe I'll add an African culture or two along with some Asian or Pacific to show its not really a disguised EU. About the Taiwanese, that's supposed to be a hint about how Earth changed before Colonization. There will be some other tid bits like that in the mod! Will add your Iranian idea. Maybe there should be a Maccau like Island too.

I think it's somewhat unlikely that the Kurdish regions would be adjacent to the Turkish ones, given the historical unpleasantness between them. Ditto the Mandarin and Chinese.

Furthermore, we need a War of the Worlds inspired religion.

Okay, maybe I should shuffle them a bit Northwards towards where I plan on putting the Hindus? Also yeah, Hindus will be above the Olympians, next to the UN. As mentioned above to remind some people, Russia and Chinese have been flipped. Thanks to you guys helping me figure this out!

What is Macptserkov supposed to mean? It does not make a lot of sense in Russian. Well, tserkov makes sense, but Macp does not and the whole world is plain impossible to pronounce.

And yes, you should totally make Cossacks its holy order.

I'm actually trying to learn some Russian, will you tell me what tserkov means? Also, will change it and put Cossacks as holy order.

EDIT: This is kind of a lofty plan, but I plan on making an optional campaign- type thing similar to the Charlemagne DLC. It's completely optional, and will be a separate download. It will focus on The Red King of Olympia, Karling Windsor, as he tries to find refugee for his subjects from the dangerous Olympus Mons ash.

DOUBLE EDIT: There will be a man made river which cuts across the middle of the map which will allow for the Silk Road system.
