Tales From The Commonwealth Of Men - An Age of Wonders 3 iAAR
Coldfront IRC: #Commonwealth

DcPIR9o.jpg

Starting Statement,
For those of you who do not know, Age of Wonders 3 is a high-fantasy turn-based strategy game, and is admittedly similar to Civilization V in many aspects. However, both games are very different overall.

In this iAAR, you (the players) will be councilmen of the rising city of Mornholm. Councilmen (and women of course,) will vote on all matters important to the realm, such as what actions our polity will take during the turn, managing the treasury, employing commanders, raising forces, and providing for the common good of the realm. During this game, the city will encounter other rising factions, immense treasures, and lost wonders. Will you found a new empire, or will we fall to our own squabbles?

Summary of Backstory,

It's been twelve years since the end of the anarchy following the fall of the Commonwealth of Mankind and it is now time for new powers to rise. The state of much of the world is unknown to the inhabitants of Mornholm, many records and maps were scorched during the anarchy. This new generation is now forced to go out and rediscover the remains of what was once the great Commonwealth of Men or risk being overran by the barbarians and brigands that scour the countryside. Our nearest neighbors, the citizens of Rodark to the west, have closed their borders to us and to all foreigners. On the eastern horizon, the steppe people flee from untold horrors that threaten them and they now seek refuge in our borders. To the north, the dwarven forges of Althodor lie in dormant wait, many say that cult rituals take place deep within the forge halls. And to our south, the great sea of Avalis is stricken with marauders and undead terrors that threaten to make landfall and ravage our lands.

Morals: (Good / Neutral / Evil)

Class: (Read on 'Classes' below)
Classes
While I'm leaving out Necromancers, you may act / role play as a Necromancer while playing as a Sorcerer.

13cw3TT.jpg

(Left to Right; Warrior, Theocrat, Rogue, Dreadnought, Sorcerer, and Arch Druid)

For more detail on individual classes, you can check out the AoW3 page on classes found here.

Overall, classes, morals, and socials will be just used for role play due to the nature of the iAAR, but they might come up later on in the game as an important matter should I choose. Players can also choose to be craftsmen / merchantmen. I'll generally consider their combat style to be similar to Warriors / Rogues unless specified otherwise.

Turns
The game will be divided into turns, a new turn will begin each week after I post the update. The update will include the results of the Council's decisions and any new matters that have come up, along with a list of all options and decisions available to the council.

Votes
Each vote should be registered in a format similar to this one,

Construction (City of Rodark):
> Build 'Civic Guard'

Employ (City of Mornholm):
> Yes to 'Notch Persson' (Dreadnought)

Movement (Army of Maximus):
> Investigate 'Refugee Camp' (East)

Will the inhabitants of the fledgling city of Mornholm succeed in their endeavor, or will their journey end in disaster? Welcome to these tales from the Commonwealth.

I played AoW 1 but never got into the sequels, so I'm not super familiar with the specifics of the setting. But I'll join in.

Since we are the council, need we be heroic adventurers? I'd prefer to be Maximus Lightbringer, Grandmaster of the local Chandlers Guild. A pillar of the community and maker of awesome candles.

Sure, craftsmen / merchants are welcome. I'll go ahead and add that.

So is Maximus Lightbringer, maker of awesome candles, official?

Since we have a hero named Maximus, let's change his first name to Excidium! And yes, he is an official counciler. His agenda is a ruinous hike in taxes on torches and lamp oil, and securing our realms supply of beeswax and tallow

Alright, sounds good.

You can go ahead and post your votes on suggested courses of action, all voting is due on Friday.

How about an IRC channel? I was just planning something like this, dammit! Now I'll join this instead. Have to read some lore also

But you should add the possibility for players to own stuff themselves, so you can maybe start with a gold mine and raise your own army. Or start with an army and then use it to get a gold mine.

And can we change the form of government? That creates some interesting conflict too.

Now I'll be quiet and decide on a character.

Bio: Legend has it that this woman was born when a succubus tempted a mortal, which died but impregnated the succubus. The succubus gave birth and left an orphan on the streets, but not before she gave her the name of Serena. As a child, she became very beautiful, but showed little care about want others felt, only what she felt. She also was a natural thief, and it soon became clear she was out for herself. Being without morals, she learned to sell her body for money or blackmail, and will do what she wants to ensure she survives.

Oh yea, IRC up; #Commonwealth

I think I'll try to give everyone a small starting balance out of the treasury and allow them to build and order around 'private armies' to claim land and what not for themselves. But since these armies still technically (in-game) belong to the same faction they won't be able to go all out total-war on each other. I'll see about it when more of the signups are in.

Changing government and civil war would be hard to do with in-game assets, I'd probably be able to divide the faction into two with a map editor, but then half would become AI. So it might be best just to leave out civil war for the time being.

In, I will write my character soon
He will be a warrior

Just checking, are you both still in?

For internal fighting, you could (maybe, I don't know the game) use that editor you mentioned to change whoever is rebelling to another faction and then pay out the battle. Or just use out-of-game calculations to determine the winner.

Infighting and government change creates interaction between players, that's why I'm suggesting it, but of course it also adds more work. Changing of government and policies is usually not done in-game in interactive AARs, but on the thread by the players.

Anyway, enough rambling, here is my character:

divine_crusader_by_drew_b52.jpg

First Name: Shezarrinus
Last Name: Stellinatus
Morals: Neutral
Socials: Lawful
Class: Warrior

Bio: Not much is known about Shezarrinus. He came to Mornholm a few years ago with nothing more than what he wore and the horse he rode. Since he wore a skillfully crafted plate armor and rode a splendid war horse however, this couldn't exactly be considered a poor start. Within a year, he had already risen high among the ranks of the military and soon he even attained a seat in the council.

He never takes off his helmet or armor in public, nor does he speak of his past, and thus he remains as great a mystery today as he did when he arrived years ago. There are rumors that he even sleeps with his armor on, and because he never removes his helmet in public, some say that he never eats.

"On behalf of the good craftsmen of Mornholm, I Excidium Lightbringer, vote for the following actions.

Since the world is frightening and dangerous, we need protection. Therefore I urge we Build Wooden Walls as soon as possible.

However we should have sympathy for the less fortunate, and therefore our forces should investigate the refugee camp. The decent homeless can come here, be put to work, so that they can become productive, candle-buying members of society. Our brave Cavalry should claim the watchtower so we have for warning of new threats.

Our sages should contemplate Invention, so that we can lead the market in innovative crafts and build better weapons to defend ourselves.

((Not sure, but I think we vote on one build, one action per force, and an area of research at present?))
