How should I know? The only thing I have heard about keys here is that Lem is an uncivilised barbarian who uses his to open his letters; though he is a Swede so I guess that is what one could expect. Even though he is from one of the good parts of Sweden.
I don't get many packages, but when I do get one I use a knife or a scissor to open the box; using your keys to open a package seems really inefficient given how they won't really cut the tape/cardboard. I guess I in principle could use my letter opener for packages too, but I don't want to ruin it by getting glue from the tape on it.

Envelopes have been self closing for the last few decades; you just peel away a plastic band and close it while applying a little pressure. Then it is sealed.

You seriously didn't know them before? By the way you can also use them to make secret text; though sadly it stops being secret once you quote it.
