Legacy of the Habsburgs
A European Political Game 1560
IRC Channel: #Habsburgs

Charles V is dead. The most powerful ruler in Europe since Charlemagne has passed. His brother Ferdinand controls his Austrian lands, while his powerful son Phillip controls the most powerful Empire in Europe from his father, including Spain, Burgundy, the Netherlands and Naples.

However, troubles arise all over the continent. While the Princes of the Catholic Church discuss the Reformation at Trent, Protestantism is sweeping not only the Empire but all of Europe. While the Empire have temporarily been settled with the Peace of Augsburg tensions rise in France as war over religion looms in the horizon as the very young sons of Henry II reign. England has become Protestant, and Queen Elizabeth reigns unmarried on the throne of it. The Ottomans are pressing northwest, further into the heart of Europe. Meanwhile both Spain and Portugal seek for riches in distant continents. Who can survive this turbulent time of both religion and politics, and keep or establish dominance of Europe?

Overview:

Welcome to Legacy of the Habsburgs! This game focuses on the time in Europe following Charles' V death, focusing mainly on Spain, England and France, however . Each player may take control of a country, and submit orders each turn in order to advance militarily, culturally, economically, etc. This game will mostly follow history, but it can and will break off by your decisions and outcomes- maybe the Spainish Armada will succeed, maybe Sweden will conquer Sicily, it is up to you. Besides main orders, there will be events where countries will need to respond with more orders or IC.

Several Rules:

1)Be kind and courteous OOC.
2)Please IC and send orders at least every two turns. If you are Spain, France or England, you will need to send orders and have IC every turn.
3) The GM has final word in game matters.

If you have any questions, ask!

IRC: to discuss game and other things, come to http://www.coldfront.net/tiramisu/, choose a nickname (please do not impersonate someone else), than type in the bottom text box /join #Habsburgs

Sign Ups:
List your top three choices in numerical order, either by country or characters:
1) France
2) Spain
3) England
The same thing just with characters:
1) Francis II
2) Phillip II
3)Elizabeth I

I will decide who gets what based on not only first come first serve, but also experience for major powers.

Orders: Every turn the players will send an order(s) to do something, economically, socially, etc. Spain will have three orders, England and France and the Emperor will relieve two orders, while everyone else will receive one, excluding events made by the GM, which extra order or IC response will be allowed. After a formal declaration of war, the involved nations will receive an extra order for that war. Orders should be detailed.

List of playable characters/countries:

Phillip II, King of Spain
Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor
Francis II, King of France
Elizabeth I, Queen of England
Suleiman the Magnificent, Sultan of Ottoman Empire
Ivan IV "the Terrible", Czar of Russia
Henry III, King of Navarre
Henry III, King of Poland(also second in line to French Throne)
George Frederick, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach
Sebastian I, King of Portugal
Gustav I, King of Sweden
Frederick II, King of Denmark
Albert V, Duke of Bavaria

Again, if you have any questions, just ask!

((Dutch rebels if at all possible))

Alright. I will allow you to start as a Dutch lord and vassal of Spain, however, public opinion for rebellion will not be strong at beginning, but it will increase over time, however you can try to speed it up via orders. Would that work?

If I am Spain, I promise I will be enough of a despot in the Netherlands, so the people have a reason to revolt, and so, DutchGuy can have some fun leading a rebellion

You kinda just threw history out the window. There was a lot of tension and secessionism among both Dutch commoners and noblemen, mainly due to the King of Spain's cracking down on protestants and the whole idea of being ruled by Latin Catholics seemingly very far away with a native population of Germanic Protestants. For obvious reasons, the latter did not find that appealing. There should at least be high amounts of dissent. Remember, this takes place 8 years before a war that lasted 80 years. The politics behind that did not show up over night.
