Those bonus will surely come in handy during the coming years.

Sadly, they won't last long since the Papal controller changes quite often.

The nobles hand you free cash and then demand compensation. How rude.

Such is the politics in Castille. :p

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 56

Being the Papal controller, the Castillian queen, Beatriz, had the power to call for a crusade. She could remembering learning about the crusades before her time when the Catholics were banded together to fight the heathens. Since then, the European nations were far too busy fighting between themselves to care for the heathens. While this crusade would not change that, Beatriz knew it would change the course of Castille forever.

The crusade would be directed at the Sunni nation of Morocco, a nation just south of Castille. Beatriz picked this nation because Morocco shared no significant neighbors and had the Atlantic Ocean to her west making the conquered land much easier to defend. She planned on steadily work her way across North Africa afterwards until she reached Egypt where she expected to meet very stiff resistance.

Oh, a crusade. That will be advantageous for you in the fight against the Sunni Morocco. Do they have any allies?

Ah, a lovely crusade. Time to stomp north africa, but dont hurt your tech too much with the useless desert lands eh;)

Your question will be answered in the screenshot below.

Lagging in tech is pretty much unavoidable at this point. I did introduce a decision later that changed it all around. :p

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 57

The stage was set for the invasion of North Africa. The crusade helped rallied the religious community to the side of Beatriz so war could finally be declared. However, the Castillian queen held no illusion that this was going to be an easy war. If anything, there were many challenges facing her like The Mamluks which was a formidable foe in Egypt with an impressive navy and an army larger than what most European nations could field.

Ziyyanids, a neighbor of Morrow, could be an additional problem as their forces could reinforce the Morocco forces. Beatriz knew the dangers with this war but she laid out a careful plan to deal with the various threats. She wasn't about to send her finest soldiers to die in North Africa unless they were certain to be victorious. For this war, the Castillian queen knew there was a lot of waiting to be had.

Yes, you are crusading now! Deus Vult indeed! May the god of Beatriz be with your forces in this war.

Time to crush the heathens in the name of God. Deus vult!

They will fear the Castillian! :D

Yes, you are crusading now! Deus Vult indeed! May the god of Beatriz be with your forces in this war.

They shall feel the might of the Catholics! :)

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 58

When Beatriz learned of what nations participated in the war, she was caught off guard. She had expected The Mamluks to be the only serious threat in this particular war but she had miscalculated a small factor. The tiny nation of Dulkadir might seem insignificant but her ruler somehow ruled over the throne of the Ottomans much as Beatriz ruled over the throne of both Portugal and Aragon.

Castille was vastly outnumbered in this war but Beatriz had never intended on going on the offensive from the very start. She knew that her enemies would attack her so she was prepared to fight on the defensive first. The enemies might have a much larger navy but, based on reliable intelligence, they had limited transports and were unlikely to coordinate their landing of troops. Beatriz wished to inflict casualties to the enemies until some of her enemies wished to exit the war making the war much more manageable.

Chapter 59

Soon after the declaration of war, Beatriz learned that she had a threat much closer to home. The favors she had given his nobles hadn't go unnoticed by the burghers who saw their own privileges limited. They had been plotting to rebel against the queen to demand change and had been operating in Madrid, a province neighboring the Castillian capital. With war declared, they saw this as an opportune chance to strike.

The Castillian queen hadn't been surprised one bit since she understood that she couldn't please everyone. The heathens needed time to load their ships and transport troops to Iberia so she could reassign all her soldiers to put down these supposed revolutionaries. Their deaths will send a message to all those within her nation that she wouldn't tolerate those who dared to oppose her. In addition, they would serve as nice warmup for her soldiers for the war.

Aren't Portugal and Aragon in the war as well?

Aren't Portugal and Aragon in the war as well?

I haven't called them in yet. Let's just say I don't trust the AIs to follow my battle plans.

Clearly the burghers don't know their place.

Some people just never learn. :p

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 60

The revolutionaries rose up under the command of a nobody called Alvaro. No one knew anything about the man's past but that mattered little. By leading the rebellion, he basically signed his death warrant and, if possible, Beatriz wanted him captured alive so a proper execution could take place before the public. She wanted the people to get the message that rebellion against the state would have consequences and what better way than show them the execution of a man foolish to make this mistake.

The revolutionaries were fighting the local garrison when the entire Castillian army descended upon them. The better positioning of the rebels and relatively competent leadership of Alvaro saw the Castillian army suffer more losses but the rebels' morale was the first to break. As they were routing the Castillian army gave chase to wipe out the routing enemies. They would leave no survivors while the war with the heathens was still taking place.

Good to see that they were wiped!

What is up with the Castilian navy? Since you are so vastly outnumbered on land I would have expected at least a powerful fleet to be employed to stop any enemy attacks. Where are the great Spanish War Galleons and galley fleets! The army cannot fend off these enemies so the navy must prevent invasions!

Good thing my troops weren't busy fighting in North Africa or they could have been a problem. :p

Well, Castille start off with a relatively small navy (unlike the English) and I simply lacked the funds to build a large navy when it doesn't benefit me that much. I still lack the techs to build big ships so galleys are the best I have. While my army is outnumbered, let's just say that my enemies couldn't utilize their numbers when they have to transport all of their soldiers by ship and their transports just aren't enough.

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 61

Under Diego's suggestion, the Castillian queen assigned General Baltasar to lead her forces against the heathens. The first stage made the general's life relatively easy. He just needed to respond to any landing of the enemy and annihilate them before they could get a foothold anywhere. Baltasar vowed to perform a flawless job for the first stage and left to assemble his men for the upcoming battles.

He would then meet with one of the army that was returning from Castilla La Vieja after slaughtering the routed rebels. Beatriz was content that this threat was dealt swiftly before it got out of hand. The last thing she needed was to reassign her forces to deal with rebels when the heathens threatened her nation. Meanwhile, she ordered her Portuguese and Catalan subjects to stockpile for war as they would eventually join the war.

Baltasar seems to be the man for your war, hopefully your opponents do not have to good pips on their generals.

Ah ok I wasn't aware the mod limits ship buildingby tech, interesting. Time to deal with the realy enemies from across the sea.

Good pips can definitely be a difference maker in this war. I hoped at the time that they didn't have rulers with insane military stat.

It was a matter of waiting before we launch our attack. :)

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 62

Beatriz was spending some quality time with her son when a messenger arrived. She didn't like being interrupted but, when Castille was in a war against rather overwhelming odds, she guessed there was little she could do. She spoke with the messenger outside the room where she learned of a new development. The Mamluks had brought the Hafsids into the war which saw Castille at war with the entire North Africa.

The Castillian queen wasn't exactly surprised by this move but still had the messenger pass a word to Baltasar about being more vigilant. With even more numbers on their side, her enemies were more likely to grow bold so their invasion should be expected in the near future. Beatriz wanted the heathens to be crushed the moment they dared to set foot on the Iberian Peninsula where they had no business to be in.

North Africa is always a pain to expand into with those nations usually allying each other. Castile will prevail though. Deus vult!

Half of Northern Africa is banding up against you, but as long as you stay on the defensive, it shouldn't be too dangerous.

A grueling war awaits us. :)

Not half, all of Northern Africa is fight me. Going offensive in high attrition territory would be suicidal. :p

Beatriz the Great

Chapter 63

A diplomat arrived from the nation of Teutonic Order requesting an alliance withe Castille. Beatriz was quite surprised to see an alliance offer at this time when Castille was in a large scale war with all of North Africa and a good portion of Anatolia. She wondered what agenda the Teutonic Order was pursuing with this alliance offer. Surely, even the crusader state nation wasn't foolish enough to tackle this many enemies.

Beatriz felt she might be wrong as the Teutonic Order felt their obligation to assist in any crusades, whether in Eastern Europe or anywhere else. Feeling that they could serve as a potentially helpful ally, Beatriz agreed to the alliance with plans to call them in. Just as this diplomat left, another foreign diplomat entered with a similar offer. Beatriz wondered what exactly was happening this day.
