EU4 - Development Diary - 21st of April 2016: Meet the Team + 1.17

Hi all!

In this Dev Diary I'll present the EU4-team as it looks currently.

The Team
  • Johan, still game director, creating the high-level design for the expansions.

  • Anona, I’m the new project lead, making sure planning and priorities are made, as well as keeping deadline and being on budget. Been with Paradox for 2,5 years and hope you look forward to the upcoming expansions!

  • Gnivom, I’m a new recruit to Paradox who loves EU4. I am a junior programmer who just graduated from High School.

  • Chaingun. Programmer on EU4. Conveniently, I used to play EU2 in my early teenage years.

  • Trin Tragula, Content Designer. I used to be a modder for PDS games and later became a research alpha/beta for EU4 (mainly doing both pre-AoW and post-AoW India). I joined the EU4 team during the development of Art Of War and my work includes creating and researching most events, missions, decisions, etc in the game as well as any changes to the map.

  • LittleFido, embedded QA for EU4, I've been at Paradox for almost two years now and been attached to EU for over a year of that time. I love seeing the project grow and trying to find, reproduce and help solve bugs we encounter. Seeing a new patch or DLC release is at the same time the most exciting and stressful time for me! I hope you all enjoy the game as much as I do!

  • I’m DDRJake, QA turned Junior Designer for EU4. I’ve been part of the Paradox family for over a year now after years of sacrificing sleep and other necessities to stare at maps. Continuing to play the game to ensure it is enjoyable and interesting is an important role of mine, as well as writing and refining future designs for EU4. You’ll catch me lurking in the suggestions forum and the bug reports section, taking in community feedback on improving Europa.

  • r_lazer, lead programmer on the EU4 team. Started on the EU4 team around 1.5 years ago and have enjoyed working on every DLC since then. El Dorado was a favourite where I got to implement the Nation Designer.

  • StarNaN, Embedded QA for EU4. Started working at Paradox last year in December. I’ve been playing Europa Universalis since early EU3 and loved Svea Rike 1 and 2 as a child, therefore I want EU4 to be as good as it can be. My part in doing this is the same as LittleFido, I try to find, reproduce and help solve bugs.

  • The Real Timor, I’m the rather odd artist who makes things look nice and neat. Or at least as neat as they can be in a screen with 50+ icons, numerous stats, and tooltips to blot out the sun. Aaah, the beauty of EU4. And let’s not forget the cute Big Blue Blob achievement.

1.17
We’re currently working on the upcoming 1.17 patch which we we’ll release when it’s ready. The patch will contain bugfixes and crash fixes for Mare Nostrum such as:

  • Christian Hordes will reform into Eastern technology

  • Disbanding ships in port will return Sailors to the Sailor Pool

  • Fix for the 0Kb savegame crash

  • Republican Sufferance impacts sailor gain

  • Performance optimization

  • Fixed Central African Lakes

  • Refining Naval Missions

  • OOS fix

  • Tightened up AI budgeting to help prevent debt spirals.

What about upgrading ships? I find it wierd that every time I upgrade a ship they take the old crew out the back and shoot them.

Really? I thought it was normal to treat sailors used to old ships like race horses with broken legs.

But.... native uprisings by penguins with 11 ferocity!

Anyways, I would appreciate it if we could get a DD about why all tech groups have the same ships.

There are IMHO a few things that should be improved/tweaked:
  • AI diplomacy should consider the impact of helping a minor ally going to offensive war against a member of trade league lead by another ally just as it does when an ally attack another ally. Or at least have a diplo/reputation malus in doing so.
  • The ledger is now somehow dated and unflexible. I would enjoy much more possible chances of analisys.
  • The mechanics of diplo relations is worth a rethinking. My view is that a country should have a diplo "points" indicator based on a combination of prestige, legitimacy, power projection and strength. This pool should be spend in creating diplo relations each with a cost based on different actions, and diplo strength of target. In simple words I am not satisfied with the fact that in game terms guarentee to knights has the same relation cost of having alliance, RM and alla accesses with OE.

You sir are a brave man, much braver than I could ever claim to be. I wish you the best of luck.

Isn't she a woman?

Could you please maybe tweak Tuscany/Florence's tradition of papal influence to something more useful, because I find that most of the time either you or the Papal State are going to not like eachother

Ideas for Dev Diaries
If you have ideas for upcoming dev diaries, feel free to write them below.
  1. Ideas you like and would consider if starting from scratch but which will Never™ make it to EU4.
  2. Changes or features you are planning for making EU4 more approachable to newcomers. Or things you would do differently if you were doing things over.
  3. Coping with the testing matrix with so many DLCs – how you do it and which features have been most problematic.

Explains a lot, in my campaign (with mods) Sweden's debt went out of control, like crazy.

Here's a quick idea for EU4, how about adding Antarctica.
Antarctica was discovered by James Cook in 1773, which co-inside with EU4 timetable.
Add some interesting events of expeditions as well.

Cook never discovered Antarctica; while he did pass beyond the Antarctic Circle, he never got within 100 miles of the continent due to the sea ice being too dangerous to go forward.

The first authenticated sighting of Antarctica was in 1820, but there are three contenders for that, depending on if they actually saw the continent or just offshore glaciers near the coast.

Suggestions:
- It would be nice to have some sort of basic filtering in the ledger book. Sometimes I just want to see the status for some competing nations and not every single nation.
- I find it very cumbersome to see how much I am paying for maintenance from a particular province. It would be nice to have a ledger page that would clearly show "how much each province costs me" vs "how much it is generating".
- Can we also have a ledger page that shows how many loans each nations has?
- I can't seem to be able to stop the maritime raids that are plaguing my Mediterranean shore, regardless of how many ships i have hunting for pirates or patrolling.
- The message filtering doesn't seem to be working very well. The nations I set to receive messages from, sometimes they are not displayed.

At least some of that stuff, like the bugs, looks like it really ought to be more of a 1.16.4 than a 1.17. I'm assuming that's not a majority of 1.17...

Every other full patch since i joined here at least has been a bug fix and balance patch for an expansion. Its how its supposed to be and this is too. Thats not the full changelog of course :)

I have to suggestions for future patches. Maybe change Florence/Tuscany's papal influence tradition and make it so you cant have The Test Act and Declaration of Indulgence Act at the same time, since the things they entail contradict each other.

i think [the decision to put Hungarian and Romanian in the same group] very offending for both culture. Add finally just once accurate culture group for Hungary, transylvanian ok however that not separate culture they are hungarians, you could add some uralian culture to that and finnish. It would be more accurate to create a hungarian-polish culture group than this current because, as both country had same kings, personal unions and because of long term friendship traditions, folklor music, dress more identical than with any other cultures.

Additionally, really, what the hell romanian culture doing in this game? they not called themself like that at least until the 18-19th century, would be more accurate to call them wallachian-moldavian, yes its possible to form romania in the game, forming that country should change wallachian culture to romanian.

My Suggestions: Change Trade system
- all provinces member of sea trade node is coastal or island .
- only have 2 end node : 1- venice , 2-Chengdu
- important trade node : have 1-2 outgoing , have 4-6 incoming
- other trade node : have 3-4 outgoing , have 3-4 incoming
- change trade routes :
+ all inland trade node (between 2 end node ) prioritize flow from 1 to 2
+ all sea trade node (between 2 end node ) prioritize flow from 2 to 1
- made real demand of trade goods
ex: demand of grain depend on number of land unit , slaves , naval supplies...

Pretty sure Romanians have never called themselves Vlach, that is a slavic term.
And culture is about more than language. Finnish and Hungarian have nothing in common aside from having a distantly related language.

From Wikipedia, with citations to period sources, regarding the ethnonym "Romanian":

Other first-hand evidence about the name Romanians used to call themselves comes from authors having lived in Transylvania and/or Romanian principalities: the Transylvanian Saxon Johann Lebel confirms in 1542 that common Romanians call themselves "Romuini",[9] Orichovius (Stanislaw Orzechowski) notes as late as 1554 that "in their own language, Romanians are called Romini, after the Romans, and Walachs in Polish, after the Italians",[10] Anton Verancsics writes around 1570 that Romanians living in Transylvania, Moldavia and Walachia call themselves Romans (Romanians)[11] and Martinus Szent-Ivany cites in 1699 Romanian expressions: "Sie noi sentem Rumeni" (modern standard Romanian "Și noi suntem români") and "Noi sentem di sange Rumena" (in modern standard Romanian "Noi suntem de sânge român")[12]
And regarding the toponym "Romania":

The earliest preserved document written in the Romanian language is a 1521 letter that notifies the mayor of Brașov about an imminent attack by the Turks. This document is also notable for having the first occurrence of "Romanian" in a Romanian text, Wallachia being called here the Romanian LandȚeara Rumânească (Țeara < Latin Terra = land). As in the case of the ethnonym "român/rumân", Romanian documents use both forms, Țara Românească and Țara Rumânească, for the country name.

Wallachia is a Latin-based exonym for the area, derived from the ethnic exonym Vlach.

... I appear to be arguing myself into suggesting that Romania should be in-game from the start date, occupying the space currently labelled "Wallachia".

Stop the argument then, it would be really unhealthy for the gameplay, and I can already hear the outcry of that suggestion.

Hah, that makes a lot more sense than it sounds like, actually! I wonder, does Wołoszczyzna(Wallachia) come from Włochy(Italy) or is it the other way around?

Please remake Shinto religion as a part of Pagan group, and syncretic faith like Tengri.
Japan has combined Shinto+Mahayana religion as a state one.

Next, please add estates for those countries that do not have them,
like Celestial Empire or Siberian Clan Council, etc.

And how about inland water fleet actions on a rivers and Caspian sea,
maybe with addition a new ships type (boat/shallop/canoe/etc)?

My guess is that they both came from a common root word that means Romans.
