Brynden sat at in the study of the Tower of the Hand, his face stricken with stress. On the table in front of him were dozens of letters, all bearing the seal of important lords. Sighing, he picked up his Ravens feather quill, tipped with black ink, and wrote out a response to the lords of Westeros.

To Lord Denys Tyrell of Highgarden, Warden of the South ((Private - Imperator))

I eagerly look forward to the arrival of your brother, and I am sure that he will properly represent an exalted noble such as yourself at this regency council. May the Seven smile upon you and your family.

~ Lord Brynden Rivers, Hand of the King, Lord Regent of Westeros

To Bittersteel

Me and my prick both feel sorry for you.

Bloodraven

To Lord Gerold Lannister of Casterly Rock, Warden of the West ((Private - Sneaky

That idea is most agreeable, my lord. It is best to prevent any chance of infighting whilst His Majesty is still in infancy. I also look forward to working with your duly appointed representative.

~ Lord Regent Rivers

To Lord Tully ((Private - Haresus))

Your recommendation speaks to Lord Hightowers skill. We will keep him in high regard from now on.

~ Lord Regent Rivers

To Lord Redwyne ((Private - Andre))

I have been considering lots of candidates and your son has always topped my mind. I shall certainly consider him, if I deem him worthy and capable enough to defend His Majesty.

~ Lord Regent Rivers

A letter is sent to all lords of Westeros, it reads as follows:

"To all the great lords of Westeros, I come to address you all in a very important matter, the matter of food. As we all know well, the realm is currently undergoing a devastating winter that leaves food very scarce. I have corresponded with several Lords who all claim to suffer from the lack of food, so here i come in. I, Lord Hightower, am offering to trade large quantities of quality foodstuffs for other resources. And when I mention resources, I mean not only money (For I also know many houses are struggling economically), my house is also ready to accept other resources in exchange for food. There is no fixed price, the cost of the foods would be settled based on negotiation. If you are interested in securing these foodstuffs, please contact House Hightower as soon as possible, so negotiations can begin.

Honorably,

Lord Quenton Hightower
Lord of the Hightower
Lord of the Port
Voice of Oldtown
Defender of the Citadel

Runceford outer another glass of wine. He had lost count of how many he had since he returned home. Likely too many. Still, it was good wine.

To think the lords of Westeros did not want any part of this wine! And worse, they did not believe he was fit to command the kingdom's fleet. He who had fought the Ironmen his whole life and commanded the largest single fleet in Westeros. The Ironborn savages would have sacked the whole kingdom if it had not been for his father and him. Thise ungrateful wretches.

The trip had not been a complete waste, however. Bloodraven said he would consider his brother for the Kings guard, though Runceford did not hold out much hope. Ser Wendell was not that good of a knight, for it was no great feat to beat the squids when they were beached. Mayhaps he could send his brother on the tourney circuit, however, to improve his skills and get him away from the Arbor.

Most importantly, Runceford had secured a future marriage for Olenna. She was still very young but it was a good time to strengthen ties with the Hightowers when all the lords of the realm scorned him. His wife, a Hightower, was delighted, not an easy trick to pull. Olenna, however, had different ideas. She had bene courteous to her mother's family and charmed and dazzled the Lord of Oldtown with her wit. But when they returned to Lord Runceford 's galley, the Vintage, she was not as obliging.

"The Hightowers are too lowly a match for me," the little girl said, pouting.

"Too lowly?" Runceford asked, laughing. "They are ine if the richest and oldest families in the continent. And you already share their blood."

"I deserve a grander match," she persisted. "You should ask for one of the Tyrell sons. Or even the baby king."

Runceford still laughed whenever he thought back to that conversation. Wed the king? Where did his little girl get these ideas?

He did not wish to tell her that the dragons would never consider such a match because they laughed at him and his drinking. Let the little girl dream. She would hear the whispers soon enough and come to resent her father as all maidens did after their first bleeding.

House Connington of Griffon's Roost

Ser Alyn Connington, 'The Pale Griffin', Lord Commander of the Kingsguard

Alyn was born in 190 AC, 6 years before the first Blackfyre Rebellion. While his house did not declare for either side, their liege, the Baratheons championed for the Targaryens and rode out to support them. Of course, Alyn's father at the time supported his Lord Paramount, but the choice was not a hard one. Connington's have always been a proud family, their Castle was among the tallest in the Stormlands, unparalleled, it was built atop the mountains themselves and whenever the storms would crash they would always break off of it's red walls. Alyn wasn't a boy when he first showed his martial prowess, he was not spoken of legend and did not give into his House's stories of their forebears riding Griffons and battling the Storm Gods. He attended his first tournament in his father's rival house, House Swann, at the age of 18 having recently been Knighted. Making an impressive showing for a noble roader(a Knight's first tournament), he won against Swann's own giant of a son. This 'peake'd his fathers interests, and so he trained for a year and went to the Ashford Tournament soon after.

kx9gw7l.png

Alyn fought hard for a young man, it was a strong showing for the Stormlands. Lyonel Baratheon and his whole retinue were there, Caron, Swann, even house Dondarrion. Alyn felt the odd house out, and mostly kept to himself. He lasted a few tilts against several of the Targaryen's, a pride he wears to this day, and even came face-to-face with Maekar Targaryen who recognized his skill and asked for his name. The boy spout out incoherent drivel before answering 'Alyn, your majesty.' During the Trial by Seven, Alyn watched from the crowds and watched Maekar slay his brother, a horrific blow that caused the entire audience to wrench, and Baelor's brain spilling out across the jousting tilt made many a man roach up his dinner. Alyn found Maekar who was wrought with anger and frustration, having offered his employment to Dunk and being rebutted, and having to exile his second eldest son Aerion to essos(not to mention his drunken of a heir). He offered his services in the stead of Dunk, in his personal retinue, if the Prince would have him. Maekar seemed not one for talking at the time, but accepted, and so the Griffon came to Summer and served in the Dragon's Hall. In Summerhall they rode out the Spring Sickness, and eventually Alyn was practically the Prince's right hand man as he made Captain of his Personal Guard. When they learned of the deaths of Maekar's family, and his appointment to Dragonstone as Heir, they had a quiet drink and Alyn wrote to his father. 'Young Donnel will have to take my place, father. I am to be a Kingsguard, and I must serve my Prince.'

EHyqHFD.jpg

During the Third Blackfyre Rebellion, Alyn led Maekar's vanguard, he grew into his role, and was shaped by his lord. It was a great sacrifice to forsake his lands and wealth to serve a Targaryen as his Kingsguard, made so by Maekar's suggestion to Lord Commander Roland Crakehall, but it was something, no, it was the only thing he was driven too. He was a highly honorable man at this time, and he kept slights to heart, especially any against his Liege. He would always defend Aerion, the second born of Maekar, he served as a good commander during the battle and was a resolute fighter. His tendencies were brushed away by his charm, sadly, fate would have him to go mad in Essos later on.

When the Prince became King, at the peaceful death of his elder brother, his first act as king was appointing Ser Alyn as Lord Commander. Alyn heavily suggested he dismiss Bloodraven, having known the mysterious character for some time, he knew of his King's shared distrust of the bastard. Alas, he for some reason unknown to the Kingsguard kept the man. Despite being at an elderly age, Maekar was an energetic King and his reign was hallmarked by hard institutions and a long peace relative to the time. A summer lasted for a while, seven years in fact as Alyn recalled, and the autumn was a nice breeze compared to past seasons.

In times of misfortune and indecision, the King turned towards his Lord Commander to settle most disputes, passing his counsel over the Hand. As Lord Commander he was sent to deal with House Lothston. Heresy and sorcery was afoot, he brought none of his compatriots, and only used the Lothston's own banners against them. He left the keep with a few landless Knights requesting the King's aid, and drove a stake through the witches' heart. Not many know of what conspired in the Weeping Tower of Harrenhal, but some report that a thousand bats fled the castle the day Lady Lothston was killed. Alyn returned with a retinue of new lords waiting for recognition of arms, highest among them all, Whent, who by Alyn's suggestion was given the castle for his help to the Knight during the trial.

During his Tenure he appointed Ser Cristopher Cole, a Knight he reviewed by his Brother's suggestion. He was a fine man and could even best Alyn at a bout, something not many could do. Garth Tarly was an obvious choice, from a well-known and powerful house, he had known him during his time as a Squire, but of course did not take that lightly and tested his skills thoroughly. Robin Darklyn was appointed at the same time as Alyn, something he greatly disagreed with, and had some retribution for this, for Robin's failure at Peake. The three others were appointments made before he could comment on them. At Peake.. Peake was a disgrace. Maekar did not take such uprisings lightly, and rode out himself. Ser Alyn, Ser Robin, and Ser Yronwood all rode with him. They met fierce resistance and, during the storming of the castle, Maekar was slain. Robin protected his body with his life, but died foolishly instead of falling back to safer ground like the rest of the men while they regrouped. Alyn, unhonest to himself, blamed the Darklyn at the time for his King's death.. but a shadow hanged over the man and he could not speak. He watched in horror during the Great Council, and saw as they spoke of merits. Merits for a King. As if any of them had any sense of what they were speaking of, Alyn Connington knew the king the most, knew him the best. The Great Council was over, however, and the Lord Commander now sat, his duty to a boy. He would not have the sorcerer's hands over this one, and the Hand's and Lord Commander's quarrel stretched over to a new King. An appointment waiting at his desk, the Lord Commander decided that this coming week would be his first to attend the small council in quite some time, having forgone the others to mourn his lost friend.

Alyn's Family
Ronnel Connington, second son to Harros Connington, born 200 AC. He believed Alyn to be the best friend he had, and was remiss that he left the castle when Ronnel was only a boy. Without his elder brother's guidance he mostly kept to Stormlands politics, he was trained as a squire and then Knight, when King Aerys I ascended to the throne he was informed that he had been made heir by his father. Such news obviously elated him, but he wrote to his brother immediately. Since then the two have had semi-close contact, writing each other at least once a month, talking mostly about their families and duties. They would try to meet at King's Landing whenever either had the chance, Ronnel even met the King whom attended the birth of his firstborn son(while he was out on a hunt in the Mistwood, still, a honor it was and a tale he often tells his boy).

qL6EsuY.jpg

Jacelyn Connington, born 214, she was a quiet girl with the red locks of her family. She grew up in a peaceful time, only ever being scared of the potential threat of Blackfyre attack. Her father assured her no one, least not the Golden Company, would ever be interested in Griffon's Roost. She's an avid horse rider and enjoys eating peaches, and when she blossomed she took to singing. She awaits a marriage set up from her father, thinking it as a journey of her own, like her uncle's.

UGXYu8a.jpg

Lyonel Connington born 225, his father had wished for a boy and while his wife(Elyssa Estermont) didn't quite enjoy his fantasies of a large family she did birth him another child on the eve of the new year. Lyonel isn't exactly as skilled as his uncle, but Ronnel always tells him that Alyn showed not much promise himself until his first tournament, and encourages the boy wherever he can. He has a small wing suit that he likes running around in, with a griffon's head as a helmet, all made of paper. A boy can dream but his father fears he not become a fool.

My lord, I write to you as thanks for the gift which you sent me of the different Arbor wines. It is truly too long since I last enjoyed a good Gold together with roasted pork laced in honey, I am most content that you sent me more than one of these wines. I will admit that the current winter is even making Casterly Rock having issues with gathering some of the longer distanced wines such as the Dreamwine or the Persimmon but I guess that is the cost of winter.
I have heard that you also enjoy a good wine and as such I ask if you may have any to recommend, and if so if you desire, to send a casket my way.

An identical letter is sent to Lords Tyrell, Hightower, and Redwyne:

My Lord,

Ser Addam, my venerable son, is searching for a bride. He's a merry fellow and unmatched on horseback, nor with lance or sword. The truth of it he's likely my heir, as my firstborn has spent years at the Citadel and seems interested in forging his maester chain. Ser Alyn, Addam's twin, is also searching for a bride. The pair are touring the Reach now. I'm also hoping to find my young daughter Delena a betrothed she can grow to love. I'm interested in hearing about any potential matches.

To Lord Gerold of House Lannister,

Thank you for the kind words, my lord. It is good to see that at least one lord has the sense to enjoy Arbor wine!

My personal favorite is Arbor purple strongwine, which I keep a private stock of. Many lords find the taste too strong but I believe you will appreciate it. I shall send some caskets to Lannisport when the winds are clear.

May our houses continue to work together and keep the realm prosperous in these lean times. If the Ironborn ever decide to revert to their barbarous Old Ways I hope we shall be able to combine our strengths and throw them back onto their barren rocks again.

Sincerely,

Lord Runceford of House Redwyne

An identical letter is sent to Lords Tyrell, Hightower, and Redwyne:

((Private- @Basquiat))

To Lord Adalare of House Florent,

Thank you for writing to me. It has been too long since I have visited Brightwater Keep. I pray your family is well.

I have betrothed my daughter to Lord Hightower's son and so I do not have any maidens of our house to present to you. However, my youngest brother, Humfrey wishes to marry. He has seen twenty-six name days and is a skilled and valiant knight. He is gentle, kind, and affectionate and would make a fine husband. I hope you consider him worthy of your daughter's hand.

Sincerely,

Lord Runceford of House Redwyne

To Lord Adalare Florent

Currently my heir, Lord Luthor, is betrothed to Princess Shaera. However my second son, Lord Gormon, seeks a bride and the Lady Delena would be an ideal match for him. My sister, Lady Sabrina, seeks a husband as well, she is a few years older then your sons though, I hope that wouldn't be an issue.

To the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms,

I hereby invite the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdom, great and small, to come and indulge in this martial and marital affair with my family and my vassals, allowing you the chance to prove your worth and honor with sword and joust. Lesser knights are also welcome to compete in the lists - let all the realm come to bear witness to such a union!

"The Baratheon are holding a tourney in the dead of winter?" Edwyle asked quizzically, holding a letter with the seal of House Baratheon. "Yes my Lord, it seems fitting for Lord Baratheon to hold a tourney in celebration of his heir's marriage to one of his bannermen." As far as Edwyle was concerned, the Maester had no name. "I should not have expected more out of the Southrons. If the Lord wishes to hold a tourney then so be it, but my duties are here in the North." Edwyle flings the letter aside. "Lord Baratheon may take slight to the lack of your attendance my Lord." The portly Maester interjected. "Of course, the Lord has quite a temper. Therefore you will send a raven bearing a letter of my writing to Kings Landing where my Uncle is. Now leave me Maester I have letters to write."
To Lord Paramount Lyonel Baratheon

Due to my present duties in the North I cannot attend the tournament you are holding in honor of your sons marriage. In my stead, Brandon and Benjen Stark shall attend the tourney as representatives of the North. May the Old Gods and the New bless your sons marriage.

To Artos Stark

I have little doubt that you have heard of Lord Baratheons tourney. I expect that you are also currently taken up by various tasks in Kings Landing, therefore I suggest your sons attend as Northern representatives. Your sons should enjoy the relatively fair weather of the Stormlands.

Greeting from Kings Landing, Lord Runcer Redwyne

There has been quite the sum of word about the vacant seat in the Kingsguard, and I have thought much on this. There were dozens of Knights who contested the spot in King's Landing alone, and I received quite a few letters of approval and recommendation. As you know there are only Seven Kingsguard, so such a position is coveted, it inspires our faith and they are sworn to life to our king.

This is why I took an interest in your brother, you have a son of your own now, and a daughter. He can serve his house only as much as you could let him, I would like to ask that he consider taking his vows as a Kingsguard. It is entirely a deniable position, and I would understand if he chose not to take the White Cloak, but if he wishes to serve his realm, and family, there simply is not a better option.

I await your response, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Alyn Connington

((Private message to @Jako473))

Lord Commander Connington,

Thank you for bestowing this great honor upon our house. Ser Wendell has wished for this honor his whole life and shall go to King's Landing with all due haste. I expect he shall serve the king well and uphold the honor and integrity of his Lord Commander.

With great thanks,

Lord Runceford of House Redwyne
Lord of the Arbor

Runceford dropped the letter on his brother's lap while he prayed in the sept.

"Read," he barked.

Wendell read the letter. His eyes opened with awe and he immediately dropped to his knees.

"The Warrior has answered my prayers," he replied in a low voice as he smiled.

"Not the Warrior. I got you the position," Runceford said rather ungraciously, but Wendell did not appear to notice.

"I shall serve the king and bring glory to the kingdom," Wendell said.

You shall bring glory to our house, Runceford thought to himself.

"Yes, yes, very good," Runceford said to his brother. "I suppose you will want to leave for the capital right away so that you can make it on time to Baratheon's tourney."

"I shall pack my armor, sword, and shield but I will not bring any worldly possessions," Wendell replied.

Runceford wanted to roll his eyes. He was going to the Red Keep, not the Great Sept. But he did not wish to sour his brother's moment of triumph.

"Make sure to write to us frequently," he said to his brother.

Lord Runceford may have been denied his rightful place as Master-of-Ships but at least the Redwynes would have a presence at court, albeit a minor one. And it would be good to get Wendell out of the Arbor. A castle with three brothers was a toxic combination, he knew, and Runceford still hoped that young Petyr would have some brothers of his own.

He hoped Wendell was worthy of his new position...

Lord Tyrell,

I believe Lady Sabrina and my Addam would make a brilliant match. I do hear she's better with a sword than a needle, and requires her suitors to meet a certain demand before she consents to wed; Addam is the best fighter I've ever known. We must arrange for the pair to meet.
