CK2 Dev Diary #12: The Maim event

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

If you manage to get all the maimed traits there should be an event where you're informed that the peasants (and maybe some of the nobility) are scaring their children into obedience with tales of a monster that resembles you, and your various maladies, to an eerie degree.

Could this lead to some sort of a taunt for a CB? For example you lose your hand and the lord next door has it on display. You then war to reclaim your hand. Or maybe it can lead to interesting heirlooms. E.g. "See son, this is the necklace of fingers your grandfather made from the fingers of Adolf, the scourge of Europe!" or something...

Are the traits listed here all the maimed traits? What about losing an ear or nose for example? This looks great and I'm absolutely looking forward to getting maimed with the next patch, but one can never have too many injuries, right? ;)

Also, since this secret dlc includes torture, will there be more torture options than cutting body parts? Like disfiguring people by burning them, or breaking their bones?

Is it randomly decided what style of a mask/eye-patch a character gets, or we get to manually change it, akin to the way we change hair and beards in the Customization Pack dlc?
Maybe it's a silly question, but there is an ongoing talk for a suggestion in a certain thread about the ability to choose your helmets, crowns and clothing, rather than getting them randomly.
It would be amazing if we had that. In my opinion, of course.

Well, disfigured, especially for women of marriage age (young, unmarried) should be especially devastating. It should decrease opinion (of potential grooms: so male, unmarried) and even fertility (as an abstraction of how their hideous looks decreases the willinigness of the male to have sex with them).

I think we have heard Doomdark's "thoughts about CK2" a couple of times already. Give us Pagan flavour, please!

Will the "Maiming Kitten of Doom" event be updated with the new traits?

With regards to future updates for CK2, have you considered updating the character portrait models? People are still kinda ugly, although it has been improved with past content updates. Personally, I would've preferred hand-drawn portraits.

People here mentioned Jaime Lannister a couple of times.
I just remembered the scene where Qyburn was treating Jaime's stump. Qyburn reccomended cutting the hand to the elbow to prevent further damage, but Jaime decided against it.
My point is, that similar situations could be used as interesting events. For example, you character gets an infection on the side of a hand. His doctor reccomends to cut a half of a hand with the thumb. The character could either agree or refuse and risk 50% chance that he'll have to cut the whole hand because of it.
Of course, penalties that come with losing a thumb are much less compared to the hand.

Please no. Don't have an achievement that's entirely lucky based just for the sake of having it. I'm sure there are any number of interesting/fun/amusing achievements related to maiming that the player can actually influence somewhat that could be done instead - like succeeding at doing certain things while maimed. Winning a duel while one-handed or something.

throw in an event where someone who has the lunatic trait can cut one of his own arms and legs off, because he wants the achievement
