EU4 - Development Diary - 11th of August 2016

Hello everyone and welcome back to another development diary for Europa Universalis IV. It is definitely a game of staying power, as this saturday we celebrate the 3 year anniversary of the release. I’m back from paternity leave, so now I’m here, and will do most of the development diaries for this expansion. Next week I’ll be at gamescom, where our plans is to reveal it all, so Jake will be writing next week development diary, as after all, the show must go on.

We have one vision for this patch and expansion, and that is to breakthru and make the organisational aspects of your country more interesting. In the june diary about ruler personalities we avoided talking about the empty spot at the court screen, but here goes.

In the next expansion, your king will get a queen. A queen is obviously named Consort or a government-specific name if you have a ruling Queen.

You have a chance to get a queen at any time you sign a royal marriage, and she will then be of the dynasty of the country of origin. There is also the chance of getting a queen of a local minor noble dynasty if you gain a heir without a current queen.

And when another one bites the dust, and you previously would have ended up with a regency, your queen will now head up the regency instead. In some governments this is not possible though, as they won’t allow it due to other mechanics, like the Dutch Republic or Iqta.

The legitimacy when a queen is the highest of either the current heir, current legitimacy and the country she originated from.

One of the benefits of having a queen is that you will know in advance which stats you will get, and a personality which may give benefits. If another nation gets a queen from your nation, they will be viewing you slightly more favorably.

Same of you may say its a scandal the way the mechanics have worked since the release of original EU3, and have put us under pressure to change it. A Queen Regent will allow you do declare wars like normal during a regency.

Now, its time the play the game….

Dammit! and that one is in my top 15.
Haha, yes one of mine as well. Johan was a little tricksy even though the "staying power" phrase got me instantly thinking of back chat (thus putting me in the Queen mode) and then I noticed the odd spelling of breakthrough. =)

How did I miss all those? lol
What if there is an event where your queen is a murderer?
First we'd have to have trade goods for gunpowder, gelatine and dynamite (with a laser beam), although such an event would be guaranteed to blow your mind, anytime.

I'm assumeing that if your King/Queen dies a widow; you get a regular regency and thus cannot declare wars?

Since it was specified that a Queen-Regent lets you declare wars.

At least we'll have someone to love, but too much love will kill you, so it's a hard life and if you keep yourself alive, you're doing all right. Funny how love is, eh?

This sounds like a great feature and I'd like to see the royal families fleshed out even more. If you read through history during the EU timeframe the personalities of the rulers and their close family and friends had a big impact on the way things played out. It's always disappointed me that Europa was lacking in this regard. Personal Union and Succession mechanics are too abstract so I hope this eventually develops into more detail in that arena too.

Indeed, like how France is supposed to inherit claims on Italy when the French king inherited Provence from his cousin. In game France almost always go after Provence like a rapid hound.

What happens if: under a regency of a queen consort of a different dynasty say, Habsburg Prince is under the regency of a queen consort and the prince died in regency. What happens next? Does the queen consort get to marry again? IE: Switch dynasty? Or a new heir is guaranteed?

Are these the puns we've created? Whatever you do, if you can't beat them, don't try suicide and don't lose your head or you'll be the loser in the end!

finally we can get Queens in this game !
It was always a bit weird that you had Royal Marriages but never a Queen ( which would make sense )
Question - What if you have mutiple Royal Marriages ?
What if your current Leader is a Queen and you have a Royal Marriage.. Does that mean she gets a king Regent ?

Or does this all mean your ruler must be a Male in order to get a spouse to show up ( And if your ruler is a female you do not see the spouse from a Royal marriage ? )
