Corazon De America: A Mexican AAR

Prologue

1821.

The year that our beloved motherland, Mexico, was founded. In another time, Mexico would go on to struggle through the ages and lose plenty of land to its northern neighbor, remaining in the shadow of their "older brother" as they are plagued with corrupt and inept rulers. Despite having plenty of promise, they failed and in that other time, remain a secondary nation, relying on their older brother nation while dealing with various problems yet going on into the world with a lively culture.

This is not that time though. This is a time of change, of opportunity. A chance that like our older brother above, to expand and to do great things. To become a Great Power and to achieve many a great and wonderful things. That is why I am here. That is why we are here. So that Mexico, founded on the blood of our forefathes and in the land of many once great civilizations (unorthodox and violent religious practices aside) once stood... and where a new regime will be born!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction

Hello everyone! This is my first AAR ever and I will be playing Mexico, the land of my ancestry. Beyond just being Victoria 2 though, it is with the Concert of Europe Mod... albeit with a few modifications I've made. The modifications range from minor to major, one in paritcular will be a bit surprising in a good way.

This will be pretty casual, albeit also told in a historial fashion.

Another difference is that I will be seeking input from all of you. I am halfway decent at Victoria 2 at best. I keep improving each run, but military battles and some of the aspects of the economy are still difficult for me to grasp (and trying to pass reforms is also difficult.) Therfore, I will apprecaite and take in plenty of advice in order to make the heart of the Americas into a great and powerful nation.

I am determined to play this and see it through.

Goals
- Make Mexico into a Great Power
- Cut down the US to size (alternately, cross fingers and hope the FSA comes out)
- Get some colonies in the Pacific
- Get some colonies in Africa
- Try and pass as many reforms as possible (no doubt the hard one)
- Avoid World Wars (and pick up any leftovers from them)

Prologue: First Moves

CD9E3FE77B7DC6F38F4A089883D5F2E281A6D5C7

A picture of the Empire from the first days.

Starting out, Mexico was an Empire, something which was something of a point of contention between the various factions and parties. Some form of monarchy, but with a fair bit more of democracy. Certainly not an absolute monarchy by any means. "Prussian constitutionalism" is a term for the form of government that it has. While it lacks the advancements and some of the freedoms that their northern neighbor, the United States of America has, there was one advantage that Mexico had over it. Something that defined the nation ever since its inception. The complete and total outlawing of the practice of slavery. The freedmen here were that; they were free. [1]

Mexico's first act was to implement the practice known as the "Rights of Man." This was done in order to present the fundamental human rights to everyone living in Mexico. During this time, a large number of reactionaries have taken ahold of the Upper House, a result of the political turmoil going on when a nation usually is first founded. However, based on idealogical reports, it wasn't probably going to remain that way.

Furthermore, the Emperor ordered the study of Introspection, which would not only increase the efficiency of the educational system, but it would look well upon the nation as well as begin implementing academic training for the armies. Perhaps most notably, was the first diplomatic extension of relations Mexico had, one that would define the nation in the upcoming years.

Mexico's diplomats being sent to the British seemed odd at the time, but they already maintained positive relations with the United States and in their private diary, an official believed that Mexico needs to remain on-guard of their neighbor, lest they be consumed by it. In domestic affairs, Mexico began increasing taxes, especially on the poor, in roder to build up revenue for future projects and for the possibility of war later down the line. Meanwhile, a new tariff was implemented for those purposes while funds were poured into Education (which included National Focuses in clergyman in the most populous regions of the country, Zacatecas and Mexico) and Adminsitration. Lastly, the construction of four Clippers has been ordered on the Loreto region, with plans for aquiring their first protectorate...

-----------------------------------------------------------------

So, yeah, ya'll can guess what the first protectorate of Mexico will be. In the meanwhile, I am to be getting advice on building military (especially on how to set them and such) while also focusing on Education for now.

[1] - The first edit I did in regards to Mexico; the Empire starts out with slavery being legal. For historic purposes and such, I edited so it starts out being outlawed.

Chapter 1: Early Expansion
upload_2016-10-27_11-56-0.png

The early years of Mexico were met with good fortune as a very good statesman took the helm as the new First Minister of Mexico. Serving as a good beacon of things to come, he began helping to build a larger army and fleet in order to keep up with their northern neighbor, who were on the rise of being a Great Power. Throughout the remainder of 1821 and beginning in 1822, Mexico was focused on growth and stability. However, God smiled upon the people of the heartland of the Americas and provided with them an incredible opportunity that would be the first major step in becoming a Great Power.

The United States of Central America, another one of Spain's former colonies rose up to form their own unified state. However, during these turbulent times, it was believed to stick together. To that end, the USCA petitioned to join the Mexican Empire. This graned Mexico a substantial boost in land and nearly total control of the Mesoamerican region, barring Panama, a region that would achieve independence from Spain just a bit later. However, that region will become of greater importance over time. For now, Mexico has been focused on keeping order in their new territories. However, not all of the surprises that was headed for Mexico were good.

During the expansion, some of the remaining Spainards ended up catching smallpox from family members and this led to the spread of smallpox throughout the nation. Moving quickly, the government responded to save as many people as possible, even if the population grew more conscious about it. Little than a week later, the government held a parade involving the brave constables of the nation, especially as they were key in distributing the assistance. However, it was spun more for international purposes, granting the nation some more prestige.

However, the government became a large matter of intrigue when the United States of America brought to matters an old deal that was talked about back with Spain. Namely, over the possibility of settlers over in the Tejas region. While some officials were all for the idea and it seemed like everything was a done deal, fate suddenly blew in the opposite direction as the Emperor used his final say to negate the deal. After all, the US made this deal with Spain, not Mexico and he did not feel comfortable. While this led to a blow in relations and the people of Mexico kept having to do deal with Comanche problems for a few more years, the diary of the Emperor mentions the answer came in a dream, he believed God sent it as a warning. That this will lead to strife for Mexico. Of course, this led to porblems amongst the various people of the top brass over in regards to the power of the Emperor and government of Mexico. Both liberals and conservatives were displeased and they worked together in an attempt to corner the Emperor. Ultimately, the Emperor accepting the sovereignty of the Congress, but he felt some form of contentment with his final act in preventing settlers in Tejas.

upload_2016-10-27_12-27-58.png

Several months later, the Empire was overthrown and a Republic was put into place [2]. The first president of Mexico proceeded to keep creating armed forces to keep the nations safe while preparing to activate the last remaining plan of the Emperor before he was kicked out, as several aristocrats and generals themselves agreed with the plan. While funds and plans were being made to secure the unclaimed territories up north [3], the Republic of Mexico prepared for war that would be coming ahead soon, with the clippers near completion...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I guess that is the first update of the Corazon De America AAR. Hawaii is indeed the first point of where Mexico will start expanding and be the beginning of Mexico's expansion into the Oceanic territories, though they may face competition in the future. But as you can see here, there are several of the major edits I've done here. Below are the notes:
[1]- The big one. I found it, crudely speaking, moronic that becoming a Republic and outlawing slavery were items you had to jump thrugh hoops to achieve yet making the Tejas thing inevitable. So I gave the option. Granted, I still wonder whether the penalty is harsh enough (-50 relations is nothing to sneeze at though I figure there could be more specific consequences that could be implemented), but still, better than no choice at all.

[2]- I lowered the militancy requirement from 6 to 3, in order to better reach this. I found it a bit annoying trying to get to becoming a Republic without causing higher ends of strife (especially with the new USCA territories). I also added the -6 militancy to all non-Mexicans in order to lower militancy of the USCA areas and not risk rebellion.

[3]- The Concert of Europe actually has an event (#44860) that for 2000 Pounds, you can begin purchasing the empty lands above, but I found that this only works partially and can be pretty unreliable, leading to blank space between you and the US when they already expanded into where they already are.

Chapter 2: The Hawaiian War
upload_2016-11-1_16-18-37.png
upload_2016-11-1_16-19-19.png

Mexico's war plans for Hawaii was developed even during the days of the Empire. The reasons for this vary, but one main reason was compensation. Ideas by some nobles to liberate Cuba and take it for themselves were shot down before they could ever become seriously considered, due to Mexico lacking the navial forces and firepower to take it, even with the advantage of Spain dealing with the rest of its colonies rebelling. In exchange for ending the idea, or at least putting it to rest for the time being, a new target was chosen. Hawaii, the volanic island off of the western coast. In fact, opportunistic individuals saw it as a good stepping stone for expanding into the Pacific. One large advantage that Mexico had during the preparation for its war with Hawaii was the invention of Introspection, giving more strength to the education department. Afterwards, the study of Malthusian Thought began. And with that, the war for Hawaii would begin:

upload_2016-11-1_16-22-52.png
upload_2016-11-1_16-24-33.png

The Hawaiian War was a very one-sided affair, as Mexico's forces easily crushed the minor military that Hawaii possessed and occupied the islands within some months before quickly claiming a solid victory and Hawaii became the first territory conquered by the Mexicans, but certainly will not be the last. The forces have remained on the island to maintain order as Hawaii adjusts to Mexican rule. In the meanwhile, Mexico has started to promote the clergy to promote reading and education in the main populace while also beginning to promote bureaucrats in order to better keep maintaince of the region. After the war, the elections began and after an orderly conduct, the conservatives remained in power.

upload_2016-11-1_16-39-24.png
upload_2016-11-1_16-42-50.png

Due to the development of more clergyfolk and the growing educational system, Malthusian Thought was researched faster. The consideration of Malthusian imperatives led to a greater desire in expanding Mexico. Along with the growing Navy, Mexico possessed the confidence to begin colonizing and expanding north. With that, Mexico began their new plan, Nuevo Norte. Here, various groups of people were sent to explore the northern areas and claim them for Mexico. Eventually, several new colonial provinces were added to Mexico and plans are being made in order to try and attract Mexicans to help settle and establish the area. However, their expansion cut short on the territory known as Oregon. Not possessing the necessary advancements nor items needed to explore up north, the Mexicans were content with what they posses. Meanwhile, they heard various news from around the world through contacts and officials. From the various wars in Egypt to the rising tensions between Austria and Russia, the world was changeing and developing, especially with a new potential ally for the Mexicans:

upload_2016-11-1_16-59-52.png
upload_2016-11-1_17-6-3.png

Speaking of future diplomacy, it came time for Mexico to elect the new First Minister. After a calm election, a diplomat of the highest calbier was elected. To many, this was seen as a perfect solution, especially with Mexico being considered a secondary power in the world and if they wished to become a Great Power and keep up with their older brother up north, they needed all the advantages they could get. In fact, it was thanks to this First Minister that Mexico gained their first ally, and quite a valuable and powerful ally. None other than Great Britain herself. After months of building relationships and strengthing bonds, the British Empire allied with Mexico, allowing Mexico to feel safer in their endeavors though Mexico has also prepared themselves to assist Britain in whatever wars they possibly could, even if was through financial means though they figured the US and Britain would not enter another war.

upload_2016-11-1_17-5-29.png

With Mexico on the global stage, the time came to prepare for more events in order for Mexico to become more powerful. WIth the construction of several mroe Clippers in Hawaii nearly complete, Mexico set their eyes over to the other sid eof the world. What lied farther out west where it became east. Several islands were considered though one in particular stood out for Mexico to take. It was the closest by, which would help out for them and had a good deal of tropical wood and possibly even coal...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And thus that ends Chapter 2 and Part I as well. Next time, I will be planning on taking Sulawesi while also keeping doing my best to help Mexico rise to the top. I would love to hear comments and suggestions, especially with the British. Fun fact, some time before they broke off relations with the Netherlands. Considering the British and their time Indochina, I'm kinda wondering if I could partner with the British and divide the area between us.

Meanwhile, I would also love suggestions and comments on what should be the next thing to research (current researching something in the Army) while also suggestions and dieas for units and troops. Like how would you build your regiments and such, especially since it'll probably be inevitable I will have to fight the USA at some point.

Reactions:
oh ok Mexican Indonesia it is Then!

To some extent yeah! Though beyond Sulawesi and the islands near them (both are considered of Moluccan ethnicity though not sure how accurate it is), let's see how it goes.

Besides, it would be Mexican Nusantara, though it depends how much I'll try and go. I might go for Bali and change it at the last minute, remaking Java's Empire under my domain

Wouldn't it be more like Mexican East Indies? I might be wrong, but I don't think the Europeans (which Mexico would surely take influence from) used the word Nusantara much.

Well, first off, Mexico would probably refer to it as the West. Why would they use a Eurocentric way of naming, especially when they become a Great Power? Second, Indies came fromd escirbing the influence of areas from Indian (Indus) cultural influence. Whether the Mexicans would go for that or now is up to them (plenty of US states have native american name origins for example).

If we manage to get Java for the glory of Mexico, it'd probably would be called Nusantara because it is an old Javan word for archipelago (and just sounds like a Spanish word.)

Actually the Europeans I believe ascribed the name "West Indies" to the Caribbean for some time, similarly to how native Americans were referred to as Indians.

I know. I'm just pointing out that the Mexicans probably wouldn't do that. It's not the like the United States where most of the people are descendent of settlers. Mexico, msot of it is mixed descendents of natives and settlers.

But yeah, update should be coming in a couple of days!
