Hello, the idea behind this AAR, is for it to be an outlet for me to discuss the game and talk about mostly big picture concepts, so there will not be much flavor or any graphics(sorry:p). I have already played to 1852, but will give a summary of what has happened thus far.

-----
Sweden is a relatively small country with no starting industry, but an 80% literacy rate. The main goal of this game, is to forge a large worldwide colonial empire similar to the Dutch, to support lucrative industry in the Swedish homeland. I used the first few years worth of national focuses to increase the clergy of my states to 2%, so my already high literacy gets better as the game goes on, then I switched focuses to craftsman and clerks.

I also planted the seeds of industry, with a steel mill, cement factory, glass factory and liquor distillery in Stockholm. Bronze factory and bronze artillery factory in Norrland. Paper mills, printing houses, lumber mills, furniture factory and canned food factory in the south of Sweden. The paper industries will be useful once I can build stock exchanges. (Also these industries correlate to local resources.)

Very early on I created an army to send to Africa, three regular infantry brigades and two artillery brigades. To carry this army to Africa I commisioned a fleet of five clipper transports and a few frigates for escort.

First I justify a war against an independent west African country to establish a base for my fleet, then as time went on, I justify against another African country further south and eventually daisy chain my way around Africa to the east coast. When the time comes these colonies will provide the logistics needed to acquire lucrative Asian colonies. As a bonus I got access to Tropical wood(a decent amount) from one of my West African colonies, allowing the construction of a luxury furniture factory in my home province already containing a furniture factory.

-----
This is the gist of what I did from 1836 to ~1846.
-----

In 1847, as usual in VICKY, I faced a pretty large liberal uprising in Sweden. There was a little back and forth, but with the help of Norway I was able to subdue the rebellion with the 24k troops of my Home Guard Army, and maintain the status quo. Politically, I have been trying to keep my population conservative, mostly to avoid laissez faire policies so early in the game, when my industry is still relatively fragile and vulnerable to external factors.

I recently unlocked the ability to build iron artillery factories and commissioned one in Norrland, which has a local source of iron ore, and I also established an explosives factories to make my new artillery factory more efficient.

I also unlocked steamer shipyards and built one in stockholm(for the steel), these steamers will be crucial to my long term strategy of building ironclad warships, to one day challenge Great Britain for colonies in south east Asia and elsewhere. I will have to stay ahead of the tech curve to try and eek out an edge over the massive Royal Navy.

<--------side notes-------->

I aim for at least as many artillery brigades as line brigades in my armies for maximum firepower per manpower.

In the future, when my mobilization abilities improve, I will set aside some of my standing army capacity to create "reserve" armies of 3-5 artillery brigades(no infantry) with leaders. That way when I do mobilize, I can put the conscript infantry into these armies and have a pretty powerful, artillery heavy force.

The downside to this strategy of course, is that it limits the usefulness of my non-mobilized standing army and creates a lag period until my country is fully mobilized.

-------

That's it for now, you're all caught up, I will write up another update as I play further.

Interesting strats.

Update #1

----------
So, I have played on to 1857, and things are still going pretty well for Sweden, we are the #7 ranked great power. I have managed to secure 2 new Asian colonies, a part of Jahore(on Malay peninsula), and the small island chain nation of Bali amongst the Dutch East Indies. In addition to these new colonies(with gold mines and tropical wood), I've expanded my East African colony into Ethiopia, securing a lot of coffee(like 4x my domestic consumption XD) and some cattle.

For a while, I was facing shortfalls in coal and iron production, forcing me to import large quantities of both. But, since I researched more industrial techs I now import very little(iron production went from ~17 to nearly 60). Another shortage I am facing is lead, which is needed for bronze production, so my bronze factory is totally idled at the moment. I believe the lead shortage is being caused by several large European wars, sucking up lead for ammunition. I will attempt to secure my own colonial source asap.

My steamship industry is now nearly on par with Britain and France(them about 5/day each, Sweden about 4/day). I was going to build more wooden man 'o wars until I unlocked ironclads, but decided to build slightly weaker commerce raiders, since they are built from domestic supplies(steamships and artillery), and also since I have had trouble procuring adequate cloth for wooden sailing ships.

Another important technology I have unlocked is one of the medical techs, which has pumped my population growth up a great deal. In addition to that tech, I have an event based modifier that increases population growth, though it has a literacy gain penalty. In any case my population growth is about 3,000 a day, where as before these two events it was only 500-800 a day.

Now, while my long term Colonial plans are going to put me at odds against Britain, I have begun to look to the Dutch East Indies as a source of new land in the nearer term. Once I feel that I have enough ships in Sweden and Malaysia, I just may nab some the DEI. Either that, or I will spend more time picking off the small independent states scattered around my colonies, time will tell.
---------

That's all for now, stay tuned for more later.

Update #2

------------
So I've continued the game about another 6 years(to about 1863), with a lot to report about European affairs, specifically the devestation of Central Europe/Germany. For several years now there has been a few massive European land wars, on one saide France and Austria, on the other side Russia and Prussia(plus a few more smaller wars).

France and Russia have so far avoided much conflict on their own territory, but Prussia and Austria have both seen large amounts of territory "occupied", which resets factory levels to one. It's still early enough in game for Prussia to bounce back, but there could very well be economic after shocks that affect the Swedish economy(such as less demand for my products in Germany, as well as fewer products and raw materials for me to buy on the world market).

I have decided to hold off on stealing Dutch colonies until I have a more substantial fleet. However my fleet does continue to grow with commerce raiders being but by the bucket load in Sweden.

As for my (small) army, it's still mostly just a tool for subjugating non civilized countries, and the 24k left in Sweden would surely get swept away by the likes of Russia. My mobilization abilities are now up to 4% or 4.5%, which grant me an additional 24k troops.

I am also planning on shipping some colonial infantry raised forces from Africa and Asia to Sweden, to allow me to convert some of my standing national army into the reserve artillery armies I eluded to in the OP.

<-------Side Question------->
In this campaign I have been buying up as much national debt as I can. Whenever the Swedish national bank has funds, I borrow all of it, so far I hold about 600k in Swedish loans. The main reason for doing this is to prevent my pops from loaning cash to powers that just end up going bankrupt, and to provide interest payments to pops.

Have any of you guys tried this strategy, or know of someone who has?

I've never heard of this strat, nor have I tried it.

I'm interested to see how it plays out in this campaign, I'll just keep buying domestic debt until the interest payments become too high I guess. Assuming I can afford the payments, just saving these funds from being lost to foreign bankruptcies should help my economy a lot.

It'll definitely be interesting. I'd say tell us how it plays out, but I think you'll do that anyways.

From what Ive read, sadly, the interest rate payments disappears. It doesnt go to the bank nor the people. Which is pretty bad for the Vicky2 economy.

I could be wrong, of course.

Well that is disappointing..

I am on a short break with this campaign, while I have a darkest hour bug. But I will come back to complete it when I'm ready. The game is at a point that I will pretty easily be able to pick up where I left off.

Really enjoyed this kind of reading. Learning quite a bit although how do you really do to follow your industry that well.
Did your shortages prevail for a while or are them just daily shortages?
I would really like to learn how to spot those things to min-max my industries on every game.
Looking forward for more!

I'm glad you enjoy this aar, including the writing style! A lot of guys here are really good at creative writing which is nice, but I am not, so I focus mine on the basics. As you may have seen already, buying up all domestic loans isn't really a good move since the interest payments do not go back to the pops, which sucks..

Most of the shortages I eluded to, are ongoing, so I will have to secure more resources to maintain economic growth! One other thing I am doing, is holding off on forming the Scandinavian union until all my industries are fully set up. This is because the Conservative party for Scandinavian union is interventionist and not state capitalist like Sweden's conservatives are.

For right now this aar is on pause, since I have a Darkest Hour itch to scratch, but I will continue it again without a doubt, once I get a Victoria itch again(which I will).
