In my opinion, base building is completly out of the question but light field fortifications like trenches or MG nests could be implemented.
Also towed guns, especially anti-tank and anti-air could have some kind of system were you can dig-in and provide better protection for those.
Fortifications, I mean those that are already in the map, for example atlantic wall bunkers could be in the map and you could man the bunkers to defend the beaches or you could go for a "japanese strategy" and let them in and use your men to ambush the enemy in the land.

Would be really interesting to have static units that you could place in advance, but then either couldn't move, or could move only very slowly or with the help of tractor vehicles, once the battle started. Maybe even stuff like tank obstacles, minefields, pillboxes, and so on.

Even if it were something simple like a stacking buff to protection for infantry and towed units when left in one place for a while it would be realistic. 1944 was a far cry from the fast-paced warfare we saw in Wargame, if any infantry formation was in one place for more than 10-20 minutes the entrenching tools would come out.

To be fair, the Normandy beach landings often don't work very well in RTS/RTT games, and it's not exactly an unexplored part of the war.

Also, they require the devs to make a good deal of assets just for those beach landings, that probably would not see use anywhere else, like Atlantic Wall bunkers, naval assault craft, and so on.

Now, a strategic layer where you decide who lands where before the beginning of the campaign or something? I'd be all for that.

Kinda odd they are making a game called "Normandy 44" without beach landings being a thing...
To be fair, Normandy refers to a decent sized part of France, and not just some beaches.

Normandy 44 refers to the Normandy campaign which lasted all Summer, from D-Day (June 6th) to the end of the battle of Falaise (August 21st) or even the liberation of Paris (August 25th).
D-Day was almost the easy part compare to what came next ...

But since you have naval experience with RD, I though that might be an option
Experience?

Please,go play naval mode in Red Dragon and you`ll know what I mean. Then you might understand why nobody would even touch naval these days in Red Dragon

I suspect that static defenses may cause balancing issues, as it would make defending easier and attacking harder, further encouraging camping.

RD naval experience can be summed up as a "grand disappointment". I hope Eugen learned their lesson, and never attempt adding anything larger then small riverine vessels into a Wargame scale game.

But the beach landing is easily the most iconic in the minds of the vast majority of people when they think of Normandy in WWII. I thought since the Wargame engine already had water as a thing, that rolling in some amphibious landing craft against a dug-in enemy, combined with naval artillery and aircraft attacks, would be technically possible.
