CK2 Dev Diary #51: The Roof of the World

Hi folks!

PDXCON 2017 is over and it was fantastic to meet so many of you! I got a lot of interesting suggestions and feedback on our games, including, of course, CK2. So, a special thank you goes out to those of you who were there!

Now then, let’s talk a bit about those ugly gray areas on the map; the wastelands. Aesthetically, I’ve never liked the gray color of wasteland provinces in the non-Terrain map modes, so I took some time to change it so that wasteland is now always shown as Terrain, regardless of map mode (we might add options for this in the settings. Let me know what you think!)

Northern Siberia and the Sahara deserve to be wasteland; it’s difficult to do anything more about that (we’ve already twisted and manipulated the map projection, etc.) However, the Himalayas and the vast Tibetan plateau are a different story… Though mountainous, the region contains many important population centers and religious sites and has a rich history of interaction with China, India and Central Asia. In essence, the only reason it’s a “wasteland” in CK2 is that we haven’t prioritized doing it justice.

I’ve never been happy with the way the eastern edge of the map feels like the edge of the world when, in fact, it should be a dynamic hub connecting at least four major civilizations (China, India, the Steppe Nomads and the Islamic world.) Well, the time to do something about that is now! In our working build, we have added the necessary provinces, new cultures (Bodpa, Tangut and Nepalese), new religions (Bön and Khurmazta), and title history for the entire region.

The Himalayan mountains, 867.

The Bön religion is a pagan faith which functionally has many similarities with the Romuvan and Buddhist religions: It is very hard to convert, has access to Gavelkind, and unlike other pagan faiths it can not be reformed (though this might change in the future.) Instead, it starts off with the ability to designate heirs, just like Buddhists. It has also got a Patron Deity system like that of the Hindus and the “defensive” Pagans.

In addition, we are looking over the great Muslim conquerors (Sabuktigin, Seljuq and Timur) to make sure they usually rise, toning down the Indian Holy Orders and making them creatable (rather than existing from the start.) We also plan to add or expand on adventurers for more generic conquests into and out of the subcontinent especially.

There is more, but that would be revealing too much too soon. :) Stay tuned for the next dev diary!

EDIT: Todays livestreams are cancelled due to attrition from PDXCON.

Pretty good stuff, would be cool if the christian religion could pick patron saints, would add interesting aspect that the game deserves. (The Patron Saint of Orleans or a seaside town).

My absolute favourite start is the khitan count of Dunhuang in the 8th century. Should be very interesting now with a whole new direction to worry about (and a united Tibetan Empire).

I realise it might be too early to say, but will the Tibetan culture(s) have their own portrait pack or will they use the mongol graphics?

Also, I'm unsure whether it actually existed this far back, but are there any plans to represent the practice of fraternal polyandry (several brothers marrying the same woman). That could be a pretty interesting way of dealing with gavelkind..

In fact, the Himalayas (which forms the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau) are much higher than the Kunlun Mountains (the northern one).
Therefore, I suggest that: the Himalayas should be completely impassable, while the Kunlun Mountains should have some passable gaps.

Tibetan kingdoms fought on regular basis with Nepali kingdoms. Leaving both directions accessible by selected major passes is the best choice.

Outside of that, now I won't have to complete my Tibetan mod I've been working on and off for months... @Doomdark any chance you could share which sources were you guys using?

That Minyak appearing in Amdo, when that was the Tibetan name of Xi Xia dynasty ruling in Gansu and Ningxia is a bit concerning...

Free Tibet!

The new pagan religion needs an achievement called "Bön Appetit". Dunno what for, but it's just too good a pun to let go.

With this patch, I think we're Böned. ;)

I do wonder, though, if Zoroastrianism itself should have a patron deity system. It's classically more henotheistic than monotheistic.

I'm just sayin' but since you guys are adding religions, wouldn't that be the perfect time to give Manichean and Yazidi the separate religion in the same religious group status ?

Been bothering me for a while, especially the manicheans since a lot of the steppes in the early start dates are manicheans.

The Tibetan region is getting opened?

You know who else opened the Tibetan region?

CHINA

China conformed, guyz.

*notices the far eastern border of the map and whimpers in disappointment*

First off - WOO HOO ! I have always hated the black hole that is Tibet, this DLC looks like it will finally make playing on the eastern map edge worthwhile.

One point though - I'm no expert in the geography of the area but I would have thought that the eastern half of the Tibetan Plateau at least would have had a lot more parallel impassable barriers, seeing as it is the headwaters of around half a dozen major river systems. At the same time, I was always under the impression that Tibet had more to do with China than India, so there should be more ways to get to the north (Tarim Bsin) then to the South (ie through the Himalayas).

My money is on this being the motherlode DLC - Tibet, China and the whole box and dice. Even if it isn't Tibet alone will make the DLC well worth the money, let alone whatever else they do about improving the war mechanics.

11 out of 10 Paradox !

Have you ever considered making a smaller DLC that adds a bunch of generic events to religions, particularly pagan ones?

As happy as I am to see more religions like Bon I'm already guessing it's gonna be quite bereft of content if the other pagan faiths are anything to go by (excluding Germanic.) I'd really love just a pack of universally applicable events about animal/nature worship or consulting a shaman/godi/etc. for a divination.
