CK2 Dev Diary #51: The Roof of the World

Hi folks!

PDXCON 2017 is over and it was fantastic to meet so many of you! I got a lot of interesting suggestions and feedback on our games, including, of course, CK2. So, a special thank you goes out to those of you who were there!

Now then, let’s talk a bit about those ugly gray areas on the map; the wastelands. Aesthetically, I’ve never liked the gray color of wasteland provinces in the non-Terrain map modes, so I took some time to change it so that wasteland is now always shown as Terrain, regardless of map mode (we might add options for this in the settings. Let me know what you think!)

Northern Siberia and the Sahara deserve to be wasteland; it’s difficult to do anything more about that (we’ve already twisted and manipulated the map projection, etc.) However, the Himalayas and the vast Tibetan plateau are a different story… Though mountainous, the region contains many important population centers and religious sites and has a rich history of interaction with China, India and Central Asia. In essence, the only reason it’s a “wasteland” in CK2 is that we haven’t prioritized doing it justice.

Tibet, 1066. Note that any green Coat of Arms are placeholders.

I’ve never been happy with the way the eastern edge of the map feels like the edge of the world when, in fact, it should be a dynamic hub connecting at least four major civilizations (China, India, the Steppe Nomads and the Islamic world.) Well, the time to do something about that is now! In our working build, we have added the necessary provinces, new cultures (Bodpa, Tangut and Nepalese), new religions (Bön and Khurmazta), and title history for the entire region.

The Himalayan mountains, 867.

The Bön religion is a pagan faith which functionally has many similarities with the Romuvan and Buddhist religions: It is very hard to convert, has access to Gavelkind, and unlike other pagan faiths it can not be reformed (though this might change in the future.) Instead, it starts off with the ability to designate heirs, just like Buddhists. It has also got a Patron Deity system like that of the Hindus and the “defensive” Pagans.

In addition, we are looking over the great Muslim conquerors (Sabuktigin, Seljuq and Timur) to make sure they usually rise, toning down the Indian Holy Orders and making them creatable (rather than existing from the start.) We also plan to add or expand on adventurers for more generic conquests into and out of the subcontinent especially.

There is more, but that would be revealing too much too soon. :) Stay tuned for the next dev diary!

EDIT: Todays livestreams are cancelled due to attrition from PDXCON.

Doubt it. Doomdark is troll level over 9000. He said that China wasn't even in the works at PDCON.

Also you can see the border in the pics and this is the last expansion so...
Damn it, would you just leave me to my insanity here for a minute? :p

Yes but consider an alternate chain of events? More importantly, what if Tibet maintained superpower status throughout the middle ages? Maybe a Dalai Lama can rise out of those conditions.
The Dalai Lama is an interesting thing. The actual first Dalai Lama is the 3rd Dalai Lama (the 1st and 2nd Dalai Lama was declared that posthumously, because the guy becoming Dalai Lama was considered a reincarnation of those two guys). Another factor is that the Dalai Lama was not an official political leader at all during even the EU IV era. The Dalai and Panchen Lamas were the two most powerful and influential Lamas, and they basically ran the two most important monateries in Tibet, which gave them political influence, since the administration of Tibet was handled by the monasteries. Officially Tibet was ruled by Mongol Hordes, but said Hordes delegated all non- miitary administration, to the monasteries.

Yes, please make it an option to have grey wasteland as I didn't like the look of the map when this happened in EUIV and I thought it made the map make less cohesive.

Unless there is a new Portrait pack coming up, might I suggest using the Mongol Faces combined with the North Indian Clothes for the portraits for the Himalayan cultures?
There is already a precedent for mixed face/clothes portraits with the Andalusian portraits using normal Arabic clothes but Iberian DLC faces.
To me it seems to fit the Himalayan region very well. (Although I have never actually visited it.)
This is the end result you would end up with:

Even though Bon quickly adopted plenty of Buddhist ideas to the point when it simply identified itself as Tibetan branch of Buddhism it's accepted as separate religion.

*cries in Manichaean*

I don't know if anybody else noticed this, but in the first image, Qocho has two additional vassals; one that uses a Christian COA (I'm assuming a Nestorian), and one that uses either a Muslim or Zoroastrian COA (I can't tell which; if the latter, I'm assuming the ruler is either a Manichaean or Khurmazta).

This DLC seems really interesting so far; seeing how it seems to be focusing on the East, I'm really hoping that Manichaeism will get fleshed out more.

I like the sound of that. Maybe it could be like EU4 where wastelands turn the color of the realm that controls the majority of surrounding provinces.

Speaking of EU4, music player in CK2 when

Ugh rally hope the map doesn't get expanded eastward

It's great that India is getting attention because the Tibetan plateau felt way to islolated but at the same time the map is getting more and more stretched.

I hope west Africa is fleshed out and I hope we can get a major rework of the early start dates balance wise

Sorry but the east has gotten a ton of attention it's had two major expansions one of which is relatively recent
