EU4 - Development Diary - 30th of May 2017

Good day all, Tuesday is ever a day for excitement as tensions and plotting surface in the office in the runup to another Dev Clash session. Today however feel free to tune in an hour earlier, as we'll be having a special wee stream for Third Rome itself.

For now though, we're going to talk about features available not only for Russians, but the Orthodox world at large: Metropolitans and Icons.

Patriarch Authority has been a game concept for Orthodox nations since time immemorial, or at least since release. While it's effects have been tweaked a little over the game's lifespan, sadly it has remained somewhat stale in that you wait for events to push it up or down. We've decided to revisit this mechanic to give it more life for Third Rome.

Patriarch Authority will still grant meaty bonuses to Unrest suppression, Missionary Strength and Manpower but it can now be spent to commission new Icons for your nation. Orthodox nations across the globe will be able to make a call against the longlasting effects of high Patriarch Authority against a strong temporary bonus granted from commissioning an Icon.

Commissioning an Icon will cost 10 Patriarch Authority and will grant that icon's bonuses for your nation for 20 years. You can at any time switch your Icon out for another at a cost of a further 10 PA, or just wait for them to run their course. Each Icon's effects are as follows:

Code:
            icon_michael = {
                discipline = 0.05
                manpower_recovery_speed = 0.1

            icon_eleusa = {
                global_unrest = -3
                harsh_treatment_cost = -0.25

            icon_pancreator = {
                development_cost = -0.10
                build_cost = -0.1

            icon_nicholas = {
                improve_relation_modifier = 0.25
                ae_impact = -0.1

            icon_climacus = {
                global_institution_spread = 0.25
                embracement_cost = -0.2

So a lot of flexibility is offered to the Ambitious Orthodox nation willing to part with some of their Patriarch Authority. Sources of Authority were, however, few and mercilessly random, so we have added a new State ability for followers of the Orthodox faith: Consecrate Metropolitan.

Metropolitan.jpg

In any well developed (30+) State where your religion is in all provinces and cultures are accepted, you can Consecrate a Metropolitan. This will permanently grant a reduction to Devastation at the cost of slightly increased State Maintenance, but when used will bestow +5 Patriarch Authority. Any Orthodox nation can do this, but it plays particularly well into the Tsardom's hands with their increased State limit, allowing them to have more Metropolitans and boost up their Patriarch Authority further.

Both Metropolitans and Icons are features of Third Rome, our upcoming Immersion Pack for EU4. Next week I want to go over some of the changes coming along with v1.22. See you then!

I've been playing EU IV for quite some time, on steam I have about 887 Hours on it. (Yes, my life is that boring. ;) ).

The Third Rome DLC is very exciting for me as I tend to play Eastern Orthodox nations (even poor doomed Byzantium). This should help spice things up during my games and force me to round my hours up to 1000. ;)

Good work lads, keep it interesting and innovative!

Orthodox ad 2, Catholics had 3 in this timeframe. Not really worth its own mechanic.
It is different. Orthodox Councils are way more important than Catholic ones, the decisions taken can be as important as the Bible. The problem is that most important Councils happened before the Orthodox-Catholic division, and, even though they had more authority, because there was only one significant Orthodox power, Russia, they didn't have much political significance.

Paradox increased the cost of their games and DLCs in some countries. Brazil included. Prices here increased 50%. So yeah.. I cant pay for DLCs now, unless they are on a sale.
Wow, I hadn't seen that yet. Yeah not buying anything anymore.

Thanks for the update, this sure is looking quite interesting!

Slighty off-topic:
National Day of Sweden, also known as the 494th anniversary of Sweden telling the danish king to stay out.
A common misconception, Gustav Vasa's election as king and the 1809 constitutional changes are in fact secondary to primarily a random day chosen by Artur Hazelius to celebrate the Swedish flag. These reasons were added later (but they probably forgot about Sweden using the Julian calendar in the 1500s so the Gustav Vasa date doesn't even add up).

Thanks for the upcoming update!

Could you please also replace the visualization of ortodox clergyman's? All Christian clergyman's looks the same. It'll be nice if catholics, protestants (for anglicans also sepparate), ortodox have different appearance.

It's just about 4 new 3D figures...

Now I'm waiting to see Orthodox Prussian Space Marines...

I know in the gregorian calendar the date in question would be the 16th not the 6th but its the thought that counts.

Too bad Ill have to pass this DLC...

(Look at my flag) :(
Yep, just looking at all those features I won't have because they almost doubled the price of their games/dlc in our country and, ironically, in Russia too.

I couldn't help but notice the tool tip from the last screen "Metropolitan of State of Novgorod" terrible English

Should be "Metropolitan of the state of Novgorod" right?
There's my next playthrough
Unfortunately it doesn't make for a very fun one to wait for almost a century before declaring independence from denmark I tried in my recent sweden game. Also Denmark is not content to sit on their hands for that century like they did in reality.

Or maybe actual Cyrillic:

(Russian / Serbian)
МОСКВА / МОСКВА
ТВЕРЬ / ТВЕР
ПСКОВ / ПСКОВ
НОВГОРОД / НОВГОРОД
РЯЗАНЬ / РЈАЗАН
ЯРОСЛАВЛЬ / ЈАРОСЛАВЉ

I write and read Cyrillic, Latin and Futharc scripts, and really had trouble finding out Ryazan and Yaroslavl in faux script....

Really? What made you take interest in cyrillic? I take it's not a common passion in northern europe :D

Since Russia is the focus of this immersion pack, PDX should take some inspiration from Hearts of Iron III and have all countries with a primary culture in the East Slavic group have their name on the map spelled out in faux Cyrillic:

MФSCФVЧ

TVЗЯ

PSKФV

ПФVGФЯФD

ЯЧДZДП

ЧДЯФSLДVL

People who does not understand that this man is obviously joking confuse me.

Edit: I also read Cyrillic (as well as the Latin script and Chinese characters) and I found some of those names very difficult to read haha
