HOI4 Dev Diary - Airplanes and Lootboxes

Hi everyone! Today’s diary is sort of a logical continuation on the 1.4 “Oak” updated where we did a full revamp on the air interfaces and much of the underlying combat mechanics. So lets dive into some more air stuff!

Attaching air wings to armies
It's now possible to attach air wings directly to armies. This means that if you assign them to an army pushing into a hostile nation those wings will get automatically move to bases in range and assigned to areas the army is fighting in. This should hopefully mean no more accidentally forgetting your air force in france when you move forces up to the russian front in hectic multiplayer games or needing to manage things manually when crossing into new areas under an advance.
Assigned wings show over armies in air mapmode (you can’t attach to army groups) for easy check on how your attached air forces situation is. We show them in 3 groups: Fighters, Close Air support/tactical bombers and Transports for supply. You can’t attach strategic bombers, because, well, having planes on order to destroy the area you move through is generally not good. You can also quickly select those planes in each group which makes sending them around and rebalancing easy and quick.
Attaching is a free feature for everyone as part of the 1.5 “Cornflakes” update. The rest of the diary will cover features in the upcoming (and still unannounced. Trust me I’m itching to tell!) DLC.

Air Supply
Ever had your troops encircled and out of supply and wished there was some way to help them out? Now you can assign your transport planes to bring supply across enemy lines. Each plane assigned to a strategic area will boost supply in supply areas there. These planes can be intercepted as any other mission resulting in less supply, and destroyed planes. Air supply is designed to be a costly thing that you only want to use at a smaller scale, or to adjust minor supply problems. To ensure this we are rebalancing transport planes a bit so you will need a lot more of them (although with reduced costs as their “air fleet” status right now works badly with being intercepted) and air supply being a logistically tricky affair will require tying up new country resource to work. More info on that in a later diary though when we can show the whole picture. What is important here is that it's hard to use this at a large scale, and that it will come with some trade-offs.

(German planes delivering loot-boxes in a totally not-artificial at all situation of troops trapped in the middle of Poland)

To make it easy to identify where to send your transport planes on supply missions the air mapmode now has a special indicator showing areas with a supply need where planes could be assigned. If you are over supplying them through the air this is also shown, so that you may want to withdraw some of your wings.

Prioritization for strategic bombing
Players can now affect target selection for strategic bombers. The way it works is that you mark your prioritized targets when picking the strategic bombing mission. Those building types selected will have a higher chance of being targeted compared to others. Bombing isn't the most exact process and we felt it would be weird if you could completely control what doesn't get hit etc. So instead we decided on a system where you can somewhat affect it, but won't be able to walk into an area with all refineries destroyed but pristine infrastructure and factories.

We also have one more air related feature as part of the DLC, but we will be showing that off in a future diary where it fits in better with the content there ;P

Next week is a diary I have been looking forward to - we are going to explain what that new topbar button does that you may have spotted in screenies :)

PS. The second episode of our beginner-stream with @Da9L and @bus is coming any second now. Even though most of you are probably familiar with the basics, this is perfect for any friends that want to join in. Check out the Paradox twitch today at 16:00 CET: https://go.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive

Ok iv officially lost an hope for HOI4 at this point. I know a lot of people will hate/disagree what i will say but its extremely unneeded to something such as start bombing prioritization or air supplying. If anything air supplying and bombing prioritization should be part of the update and adding an air force to any army is what needs to be paid for. Its pretty BS the 1 feature some or most might not need we all get, then 2 highly needed features are pay walled. I know you guys do this to encourage people to buy the DLC, but so far the prices asked for are to high for what we get.

Hell i think you guys should just encourage modders when it comes to adding focus trees because the base focus trees in vanilla HOI4 are inferior compared to what people who don't even get paid for can do. Some of the things you add can be easily modded in, you guys even integrated a mod someone made for free on their own time to fix the AI to some degree a short time after this games release showing a Bethesda-esque style where you leave issues for the modding community to fix on their own.

I'v been a GS fan starting with For the Glory, and honestly the way iv seen these games evolve have really saddened me seeing how PD has gone the route of many other developers and push out small PDLC for the price i could be a game with 10 times the content. For Instance, I could get Mount and Blade: Warband for $5 cheaper than TFV and DOD, Hell same goes for Making History 2 war of the world which is the same price as TFV alone or Supreme Ruler for $20. I hopped that the money they got from the first 2 PDLC would then fund the third in which it would be larger then the others, but i honestly should have kept my hopes down.

Deurker,

Unfortunately modded focus trees are usually nationalistic op focus trees and the “best” focus tree/mod pack is road to 56 which at best can be called unbalanced and op for some nations.

And while people will argue that the vanilla focus trees are unbalanced I trust a company that gets paid to make ww2 era game to create more accurate and unbiased focus trees that are somewhat accurate (I am not a historian on ww2 so i cannot judge fine accuracy) then mods that turn minors into unstoppable paintbrushes.

Edit: I do understand that you want dev time spend on “proper” features but balanced focus trees are hard to come by in the workshop and paradox (in my opinion) is doing a reasonable job with the focus trees.

But of course I could be completely wrong so I apologise if there are now a lot of balanced focus trees on the workshop

Tac and Cas sadece savunan ve saldıran birlikleri bombalıyor
Tac and Cas diğer zamanlar bombalamıyorlar düşman birliklerini

In the end, the features of hoi 1 and 2 came
But they did not talk about the question of attacking the air force's land troops
Tac and Cas are just bombing defending and attacking troops
Tac and Cas are not bombing other times with enemy troops

ve nokta stratejik bombardıman olacak mı?
örnek
majino hattının gerisindeki yolları bombalayıp ordaki birlikleri supplsiz bırakabilecekmiyiz

and will the point strategic bombing be with strategic bombers?
sample
can we bomb the roads behind the majino line?

Yes, yes what you deem needed is different than mine as well as many other. But as it stand, more will benefit in this current state. If you got your way, do you think there will be no complaint? I wager it will be the same, maybe more.

"inferior" is not how you spell balanced, work well with every other tree and not breaking the game. The key issues was not abandon, they are still trying to fix it. They do acknowledge the AI mod but it is not what they trying to achieve.

And as an amateur content creator, I think I'm a little to biased to debate on the 3rd paragraph.

Would you prefer going back to the HoI2 and HoI3 model where you get nothing if you don't buy the DLC?

No patch, no free content, not compatible with MP games or new mods, nothing at all.

Attaching wings to armies is a brilliant feature. I assume they will rebase too?

They will:

Will transport planes at least get XP-paid upgrades?

No need to add extra tech to that, but modding your stock aircraft to add a little bit of range or air defense is what I for one would welcome.

Translation:

Finally there are a couple new features for HoI.
But there was no discussion about the problems while air force is attacking land forces.
TAC and CAS only bombs units that are currently in a fight, otherwise they don't attack units

And will there be an option do strategic bombing for exact locations? For example will we be able to bomb the infrastructure behind Majino line and will leave the units on that location out of supply.

It has occurred to me that while 1 bomber, fighter, etc. = 1 bomber, fighter, etc. however 1 transport = the transport capacity to move x airmobile troops or supplies.
At the same time 1 bomber, etc. uses up 1 of airfield capacity, while however many transport aircraft = 1 transport capacity uses up 1 airfield capacity ?

I think this starts looking real good. Attaching CAS to armies was one of my top wishes, and air supply is also great.

I'm sorry if this has already been answered, but the screenshots showed a front line called "River patrol". Is naming front lines a new feature?

I have a feeling that I will but some Flak for this, but...

I've been a fan of Paradox for a long time and - regarding the DLCs and expansions - I have been, at best, supportive or, at worst, passive. However, this time I have to seriously question why Air Supply is being made a paid feature? It existed in the HoI2 base game (I forget if it existed in HoI3 - not played in ages). I feel that Paradox is going down the same route that EA/Maxis took with The Sims whereby features were removed with each iteration of the game, only to be added in DLC and expansion packs.
