To keep this moving along, I would highlight yet another instrumental work of the early forum. This time it is an original HoI work from the great @Mettermrck (and one I am slightly surprised has not already been mentioned.) Thus, I give you The United States: 'Advantages without Obligations' - a monumental AAR that I am certain many would and/or could claim as an inspiration. At this late date, it is a great sadness that the screenshots seem to no longer be in effect as that was one of the more enjoyable aspects of the campaign. Mettermrck's work on each election during this time frame were quite inspired and though I doubt it would entirely take away from his excellent history book style, it may limit the enjoyment as a new reader.

I could continue to gush on this AAR for many more paragraphs, however I have already done so. I wrote a review of this for The AARland Gazette many years ago so go here to see those thoughts. I would not change a word today.

Mett was (and likely remains) a great writer and was even at one point one our of mods. He was truly influential in not just HoI but the entirety of AARland. And while I would not count myself as judge as to his finest work on the forum (he has others) this is the one I recall more than any other. Having never really been much of an HoI guy myself, I was truly impressed by how engaging the work was. I was not the only one as many might see in the later posts of the AAR. Congrats Mett! Truly well deserved for this Veteran Showcase!

In honor of the AAR that hooked me on Hearts of Iron "back in the day", I re-read Mettermrck's excellent "Advantages without Obligations" AAR courtesy of this thread. Sadly it is missing its images, as are a great many of the old AARs.

Fortunately, in 2007 I asked Mettermrck for the original 700-page PDF with images, stuffed it into my e-mail and kept it for a decade. *Pouf*, now it is uploaded to this post. Enjoy Mettermrck's USA: 'Advantages without Obligations' with all of its excellent images. Sadly, I do not have the capacity at this moment to dig up and attach Mettermrck's assorted epilogues to the PDF, which would add a few more pages.

As I recall I never got around to reading the original, but it was always highly recommended.

Pull that lovely PDF down and get to work, stnylan!

Took me a few days to read it, and the images elevate it from a 4/5 to a 5/5 history book AAR. Enjoy!

Now I know it is here I might well read it on holiday or something.

Any chance to read Advantages Without Obligations is alright by me! A masterful work. Even without the screens, it remains one of the best ever written in these parts!

So. I'm sure you are all tired of me doing all the nominating, but this is an important awAARd IMHO and no one seems to be doing it for me.:p I hope it's okay by you all! :)

I'd like to nominate another @RossN AAR, this time his Antioch AAR, Eastern Ambition. Even without the pictures, it's a good read. :)

It is certainly okay by me @Nikolai !

Apparently I did read this one, but I can't remember doing so - given the timings alas I am not surprised. Still, very many congratulations @RossN

Congratulations @RossN! :D That one certainly brings back some fond memories.

@Nikolai: It's funny that you mention it -- I've been meaning to put forward some nominations that I've been entertaining in the back of my mind, but somehow I never get around to it when I'm actually on the forums...

I certainly never mind, Nikolai! Your recommendations are always great. This one is no different. @RossN has written so many great things here. This one is no different and certainly deserving of a great remembrance. Always well done, RossN!

Wow thank you so much @Nikolai! This one takes me back, I remember it being a lot of fun and heavily influenced my later work. :)

Thanks also everyone who commented. I've been a bit distracted by real life but I'm hoping to return to my ongoing AAR very soon.

I'd like to nominate Crossfires by AtlanticFriend. While AF himself is sadly unmerged and long gone, he did leave us this unfinished masterpiece. The pictures are also long gone, but it's a narrative AAR so still works without them.

I was reminded of this by @H.Appleby in a different threat and I can't do much better than quote his words;

That scene in Crossfires with Heydrich and Himmler sizing each other up is so perfect, both for the literary value and the characterization. Heydrich especially is chilling in a way only a few villains manage to be (even in a setting as conducive to the type as Nazi Germany) and the oily and odious Baldwin portrayed here is just the same as the one we see in your more dispassionate retelling of Winston's fall.

If you haven't had the pleasure of reading this I can heartily recommend it.

Very many congratulations

@ComradeOm has always done fine work and I remember that one well. Certainly congrats!

And by the way, Crossfires was excellent! Congrats to Atlantic Friend too!
