Having come into my lordship, I have decided that I will start to keep the chronicles of my family written here, for the future lords of Warwick and Worcester to see. https://i.imgur.com/TZ6p7en.jpg Ruling as an earl is hard work, but people certainly can't say I don't try. My hard work, causes me to eat little as I don't have the time, which is fine anyway, but some would say I'm not the best earl, and if I'm honest with myself I'm fearful of swords. https://i.imgur.com/HdSnKAW.jpg https://i.imgur.com/F9h6w8F.jpg I have two sons, and as I don't want to cause more of a succession crisis, they will be my only two, unless both should die. (Author's note: I'd only need my heir to die but I don't think Beornoth knows his second son isn't in his dynasty).
https://imgur.com/iAKmLL7 http://www.austinnewport.co.uk/img/projects/80430046559634330d37z1-w600h400.jpg I rule from a small hill fort, in a place called Tamworth
https://imgur.com/QdsT9as
My liege is a great leader named Offa, who has subjugated many petty kings of what European monks and scholars are calling England, as tributaries.
https://imgur.com/75tOCEI https://imgur.com/9gjOvem Aside from Offa's kingdom of Mercia, there are two main kingdoms in England, Northumbria to our North, and Wessex to our south.
https://imgur.com/PexzPRO https://imgur.com/cDPvkme Across the sea from this island, rumours come that the king of the Franks has recently passed away, and that in Frankish tradition, his two sons have split the kingdom. War will surely come between them.
https://imgur.com/jld1lhL For some time now, tales have told of savage barbarians even further across the sea, north of where my ancestors came from, who have designs on sailing and pillaging foreign lands. But for now they are just tales.

Hello everyone, this is the author speaking, that was my introduction to my first AAR. This will be an attempt to do several things.
1: create the empire of Brittania
2: conquer every island on the map, including ones with straits.
3: Accomplish what the Angevin empire could not and conquer France
4: Take everywhere which was in the British empire that is on the CK2 map.

I will try to role play this, however the traits content and craven will not prevent me from declaring wars. I am using Ironman, and the only rule is: while my vassals are allowed to conquer foreign lands, if they rebel, I have to take those lands from them and give them independence. So for example the king of Bengal might decide to invade Tibet, and if he rebels, I then have to take Tibet from him and give it independence.

Thank you. Would you know how I can edit my AAR name to spell "conquest" properly?

In order to grow my power and standing within the realm, I instruct Gyrth, my trusted chancellor, to check through the annals of Mercian history to check if I have any claim to the county of Lyndsey east of the Mercian capital of Leicester whatsoever.

qfRDTzy.jpg

While Gyrth does that, I ask around the villages under my rule for a physician to treat me in case either I or one of my sons get sick. I meet the herbalist Aelflaed in one such village. I see the herbs she has acquired, and ask her to join me. She responds "My earl, I have dreamed of such a task all my life I joyously accept, with all the gladness in Mercia."

vzGMy0Y.jpg

I decide to embark on a holy pilgrimage. Though I would say I am by no means a bad liege, I have little experience of life outside of luxury and so decide to adventure.

VbRssz7.jpg

My destination is Rome, in the ancient Roman province of Italia. That city was once the capital of the largest empire the world has ever known, and is where the papacy is based. I am ecstatic at all the marvellous, glorious wonders that must await me upon arrival.

FG2RZYR.jpg

While on pilgrimage, I meet a wondering monk who calls himself Aefelwird. "Are you on route to fulfil your service to God?" Aefelwrid asks.
"Yes, but lately my faith has been waning. If there is a god why is the world filled with grief, hardships, and heresy?" I reply.
Aefelwird rests his hand upon the bald patch of his head which monks shave the hair off and replies "God has a plan for everything and everyone, including you my lord." I find myself agreeing with him.

While trudging through the land of west Francia, I see peasants building a bridge with an arch across a river. The head builder notices me and proceeds to tell me how they are building it. Brutally honest as I am, I tell him "you build rickety bridges, while nobles build castles!"

tRpZBeR.jpg

Despite my uncouth but honest rudeness towards those peasants, they give me directions to a more developed crossing further downstream. However it is through some woods, and while walking through said woods I forget the directions which I barely listened to and get lost. I resolve to listen to directions better in the future.

I eventually reach Rome and am bedazzled. The coliseum, saint peter's cathedral, all the old forums, the holiest city of Christianity does not disappoint.

R41jdXA.jpg

I arrive home in Tamworth having learnt a great many things, and with a new resolve to fulfil my god given destiny and take over Mercia from king Offa. But not right now, right now he is too strong and such a seizure of power would be illegal by all counts and I would be quickly removed from power.

tX3taO4.jpg
m8KnzcO.jpg
b2K3RgY.jpg

Upon arriving in Tamworth, I learn that the king of middle Francia has died. Killed in battle with one of the heathens that lives in Spain. Yet another reason we must purge all things non-Christian. And a reason I must take the throne of Mercia to have the troops to do so. His brother Karl king of West Francia inherited, leading some highly suspicious people to believe that Karl had somehow arranged for his brother to fight the Saracens and be killed by them.

K1KBeOr.jpg

Gyrth's machinations come to fruition and I gain a claim on the earldom of Lyndsey. The earl is outnumbered by my men 3-1. I declare the war.

ZxDDy4w.jpg

Despite our numerical advantage, the Earl of Lyndsey has an exceptionally defensible position, on an island in the middle of a river. I give the order for my men to attack.

TMU76P1.jpg

From a hill was where I watched the battle, mounted atop my horse. My personal flank on the right was struggling but it eventually overcame it's opponent. From then on they peppered the centre. In the meantime the left flank had no trouble dealing with it's counterpart. The centre held on for a bit, but with all three sides releasing arrow volleys at them they soon fled. Due to lack of accessibility because of the fact the battle was fought on an island, most did not escape.

d1NG4zg.jpg

Including earl Aldfrith. He took an arrow to the knee while running. "Please do not execute me!" He grovelled after I noticed him among the captives. "Do not worry my friend." I assured him. "You shall relinquish Lyndsey, tell whatever men survived and whoever you left in the garrison that they are mine, then you can go on a new adventure!" He complied.

IDff7dV.jpg
gNILnau.jpg

With the men of Lyndsey now loyal to me, I had almost as many men as the king. Of course I still wouldn't dare to attack him. Offa was very respected amongst even non Mercian kingdoms, and many of them paid tribute to him. I needed yet more men.

1ysbXLS.jpg

The peasants in Lyndsey came to me complaining of a dragon that had been harassing them while Aldfrith was earl. As I was too scared to organise any form of action against such a beast, I simply denied it's existence.

Meanwhile on the continent, the Avar Khaganate fell and Karl of Frrancia conquered Bavaria and attacked Saxony. Though I was excited at hearing somebody was going to deliver gods justice to heathens, I was still slightly sad that the ancestral homeland of our people was going to be conquered.

9JCqRvA.jpg

I built one of Europe's first hospitals since the fall of Rome outside my fort. This would allow my peasants to stay healthy, well as healthy as a peasant can be while still being a peasant of course.

6ZYOqhu.jpg

King Offa died and now his under age son ruled Merica. All the petty kingdoms had stopped paying tribute. Now was the time to start putting a master plan into action.

Yes, time to put the Mercian's in their place! :D

BEORNOTH: chapter 2: the war of the five kings part 1.

X23HM5U.jpg
bW2OAwx.jpg

My line needed to be secure, so I ordered my spymaster to compile a list of women throughout Christian Europe who are not yet married, for my son to marry. In the end, I decided upon the daughter of a Frankish bishop. She was nothing special, but she was the only one who was both of age and decent birth so the ceremony was arranged. I asked for a dowry to be sent, and the bishop gave me 22 gold. How a simple bishop managed to attain so much gold is beyond me. I would dread it if I knew, that I had unwittingly took money donated to the catholic church, surely a great, unforgiveable sin!

BmHgdvT.jpg

After I arranged my sons marriage, I put my plan to become king in action. While less popular than his father, the boy king was still nit so unpopular that the lords would be willing to commit treason against him. I did have three hundred more men than him, but I had no legality to claim the throne of Mercia, which I needed the lords to give me. So I needed a more unpopular person sitting the throne. There were five possible options: Wigheard who was earl of Derby and current regent of Mercia, so he wasn't viable. Or any of the four daughters of Offa. I chose the youngest: Seaxburh. As a girl the earls would see her as weaker than a man, and as a 3 year old, the earls would think somebody older is needed to run Mercia.

qZxu6RR.jpg
sXLwfQj.jpg

I marched on Leicester with 750 men and demanded of the king and the Witan that Seaxburh become the new queen of Mercia. The boy king knew he had less men than me and was old enough to make some of his own decisions, so he relented and Seaxburh was made queen, with Wigheard still as regent and head of the Witan. I was installed on the Witan as steward, but I had no intention of staying a mere coin counter.

446huJL.jpg

Yesssss, all according to plan. On the first meeting of the witan after the installation of Seaxburh as queen, the queen started blubbering loudly ten minutes into our meeting, as she wanted her toy horse. Wigheard ordered the queen to be taken to her room and given her horse. After this was done, I said "By all that is holy, we need a more mature king, I bet I could fill that role that our dear king Offa sadly left too early." Wigheard and the others of the witan said "by the lord, I think I would quite like such a state of affairs." As I was steward, I wrote down all words said during the meeting. I now had my claim, soon I would ascend my god given throne.

DkdfpYQ.jpg
l3E6act.jpg

Once again I raised my men and demanded someone new be placed on the throne: myself. However this time, Wigheard was leading as Seaxburh wasn't old enough, and though he verbally supported my claim to Mercia, in action he refused to capitulate. The war had begun. I immediately marched my men to Leicester, where the majority of the loyalists 300 troops were holed up. The earl of Oxford and Bedford who coincidentally was Seaxburh's maternal grandfather also rose a few dozen men, but not enough to threaten my host or forts.

tzEu3Hk.jpg

A few days after the last soldiers defending the castle of Leicester surrendered and Seaxburh fled to Oxford and Wigheard Derby, I received news that my daughter in law was pregnant. The line of Mercia was secured!

1gExPUo.jpg

Four months later, in April, my granddaughter Beorhtgyth was born. Disappointing that it wasn't a boy, but at least my line would survive as monarchs.

Lbx3bTt.jpg
VGTyfcW.jpg
7CT1JKl.jpg

(Authors note: Ignore the wars against Wigheard and the sieges those are later, I just couldn't find a better screenshot of this moment) Apparently there was a reason Wigheard fled to Derby and not Oxford with his queen. It was because he also didn't want her to be queen, or he believed she was too weak to defeat me. Wigheard declared himself king of Mercia, with the support of the earls of Chester and Northhampton. This now meant I had a somewhat formidable rival to the throne. Though I wasn't technically at war with the new self styled King, I would be upon either of us defeating Seaxburh, and we would have to compete for sieges. Not to mention he had more men than me. I decided to attack his larger force in his home county of Derby, before he could join them up with his forces from Northhampton. It was across a river, but we had more men and they were missing the whole right flank. Our cavalry charged at their archers, before they could loose, while outright flank shot arrows at those who were wounded by our cavalry charges. Before long they were fleeing, however the Northhampton forces arrived to reinforce them. Their renewed energy made our centre route, however our flanks were able to hold on and route their entire army. My destiny as king of Mercia was all but secured.

JMi60ca.jpg

One day I was in my study brooding over a war map, when my bishop knocked on my door. I allowed him in. "My lord, I bring you these texts. I think they hold much truth to them." Flicking through the pages I noticed they were promoting heresy! Fearful he would try and bring others into the arms of Satan, I had him confined to the dungeons. Who knew how much damage had already been caused by this apostle of Lucifer though.

fZ7vrK4.jpg
kjSa6D3.jpg
hjA3l6d.jpg

The remnants of Wigheard's forces came at my forces while we besieged loyalist holdouts near Leicester. He still had more men, but now I had the river. I redistributed my troops across the formation, putting troops previously on the centre on the right. It paid off. Though our right still took more casualties than Wigheard's, they still held. The same cannot be said of Wigheard's centre, which our archers crushed, before proceeding taid our right in pushing back. Before long just their left flank remained, until it too was defeated.

VFmmTnf.jpg
HbBHurY.jpg

After the last loyalists around Leicester were defeated, I wanted to take the holdings of Seaxburh's grandfather, who was the last stronghold of loyalism in Mercia. I didn't have the men to besiege Oxford but I did have enough for Bedford. Unfortunately Wigheard's surviving troops got their first. As I didn't want my troops to risk a loss by attacking over a river, I marched them through East Anglia and Essex and in to Bedford. We defeated them swiftly and began besieging Bedford.

KHD7Gjf.jpg

While celebrating my victories a local woman at court started eyeing me seductively. As an extramarital affair was against god, and it would be beneath a king to marry a mere peasant, I declined taking it anywhere with her.

Lbx3bTt.jpg

(Authors note: again sorry for using the same screenshot twice, I didn't have a better one.) After the siege of Bedford was over, I got the worst news of this war yet. A massive host of 1100 heretics rose in Wigheard's lands. While again they did not technically rise against me, they claimed to be against all people who didn't believe in their heresy, and wanted to specifically capture and secede some of Wigheard's lands from any foreign power. As those are part of Mercia I would eventually have to fight them. However as of now, nobody had the men, even if the other three claimants to Mercia: myself, Wigheard and Seaxburh joined forces as unlikely as that would be, we still wouldn't have enough.
Osulf! I bet it was that heretical bishop who converted them. He will be tried after the war.
449BR5i.jpg

As if the situation couldn't get any worse, the king of Essex, who was formerly tributary to king Offa, declared war on Wigheard, trying to seize Northhampton. "I WILL NOT ALLOW MERCIA TO FRACTURE INTO INDEPENDENT STATES FOR MY WANT OF A CROWN AND AN UPSTART PEASANT KING AND A MOB OF HERETICS." I yelled to my war time witan when we received the news. "WE WILL CRUSH THEM AS WELL!"

k4mF5eX.jpg

There was some good news. The heretics who had grew in number and the Essexians decided to fight each-other in Derby. The heretics won, crushing the invaders.

dVP5rSU.jpg

Meanwhile the continent was having their own heathen rebel problems...

NXxy5Ew.jpg

While besieging loyalist forces near Bedford, the essexian remnants decided to attack. While I had no idea why they were attacking with an inferior force, I had no qualms with them doing so. We won the battle with ease.

W5M58O4.jpg

After the battle, I decided to attack a loyalist warband the earl of Oxford had risen up. It was only 50 men, and it was also the only loyalist force we killed in the whole war that wasn't inside a fort or other building.

Hn3pmlz.jpg
bVemefk.jpg
NdqButU.jpg

Being the strongest claimant to the kingdom of Mercia, peasants rushed to tell me of rumours, and what might help me, in order to gain my favour. One day, one such peasant told me, an ex spymaster of king Offa lived near Tamworth. I decided to seek him out and study under him. Learning the arts of intrigue could help me to both win the throne of Mercia and retain it, lest another Beornoth or Wigheard should get in the position to try and replace me with their own schemes.

lyVbYXq.jpg

In August of 779, the loyalists finally surrendered to me. I had now taken the throne of Mercia officially. Now all I had to do was defeat the other three factions, and my reign would be secured. I knew I was ordained by God. Why else would he allow me to take the throne from the old dynasty, the very daughter of King Offa! My dynasty will rule a thousand years, and bring peace and Catholicism worldwide!

Who wants an easy life? :D

So having helped break the realm you now need to help put it back together.

BEORNNOTH Chapter 3: the war of the five kings part 2 and immediate aftermath.

27JpCor.jpg

As my men marched up to derby, our numbers replenished by men from oxford, to defeat the rebels and invaders plaguing rightful Mercian land, we encountered Wigheard's warband. a shadow of it's former self. Despite our attacking across a river, Wigheard's men were so demoralised by all their defeats that they couldn't perform well on any flank. They tried to kill us with arrow volleys, even though they had but a single archer! Needless to say we crushed them brutally.

TtfeWU0.jpg

My son unfortunately caught syphilis. As he was in the field I was very disappointed with him, because this meant that he had either been seduced by a mere peasant and cheated on his wife, or that he had been raping peasant girls, both of which were dishonourable and unholy for the future king to do. Still, I prayed for his life and his soul.

uIC2DUA.jpg

More heretics rose up in the Frankish lands. I needed to win this war, and become brytenwalda, else I feared that heretics and heathens would overrun all of Europe, and doom us to a thousand years of darkness.

7H9ictm.jpg

We wished to liberate Chester from essexian hands, so we fell upon them with 400 men. They decided to sally out with a cavalry charge. Our archers fired upon them, while our infantry surrounded the archers. As the essexians had one cavalry for every 4 infantry men we had, their charge was quickly defeated. My son redeemed himself smashing the right flank, while our centre whittled their centre down, and the left struggled for dominance. Chester was liberated from Essex.

BuEs62T.jpg

A force of 2200 heretics were near chester, their whole army. I ordered my 400 men to fall back to Tamworth. I then ordered they give 1/3 of all they've looted in this war to me, which gave me near 300 gold. Afterwards, I sent to the European mainland to hire 2250 Burgundian mercenaries who insisted they were not Burgundian but "Swiss" whatever that means. Then I marched to Chester with my new army, to fight certainly the biggest battle in Mercian if not English history. This battle would determine the fate of Mercia, nay all of Christendom!

AmP6ZxM.jpg

My son led a great cavalry charge on the right. While they had both more archers and cavalry, they were effectively peasants, by this point save King Karl's army, our troops were probably the most experienced in all of Europe. However the centre and left seemed to be buckling. My son would have to finish off the right, and come to help the centre, and fast.

SlTRqMW.jpg

And he did just that. The right broke, and the centre was saved, and both started pursuing their respectful flanks which were fleeing with their tails between their legs. However the left was about to fall to their adversary. We still pulled through, and the heretics which had threatened all of England, were at last dealt rotting in hell.

Ka2DflX.jpg

With his forts fallen, every army that stood in my way defeated, and just 30 loyal men left, Wigheard travelled to Tamworth and offered himself in chains. The essexians promptly backed off, probably hoping not to anger me any more than they already had.

9MonT0c.jpg

With that Mercia was whole again! Though we were torn apart my coup had eventually paid off. I am now the King. Still there was much reconstruction to do. I only had 500 men, and 40 gold thanks to the battles, and me hiring the mercenaries. Entire villages were torn apart. The heretics had even succeeded in converting some of the counties they captured during the war like Chester. They would need to be brought back to the light of god, else another heretic could try to tear apart civilisation.

2zVDkMm.jpg
2zVDkMm.jpg

Though my Witan advised me that revoking derby from Wigheard, and Leicester from Seaxburh was ill advised, as either one could anger their former supporters, they agreed with me appropriating chester and northhampton from their earls, both of whom had been loyal to Wigheard.

y2fFrhJ.jpg

My second son was given Chester to placate him, and he decided to form his own dynasty, which worried me that he could one day try to take the throne from my dynasty, but I pushed back such paranoia.

St17Tqv.jpg

I gave Lyndsey to Wulfhere. Wulfhere was my tutor in the arts of intrigue, so I felt he was most likely to be loyal to me. Add to that as a peasant he would probably never expect to have risen this high so he would not risk losing it all.

Now to deal with Osulf and Northhampton...

Well there is the second major hurdle done.

Now to win the peace.

BEORNNOTH: Chapter 4

pQQNHOm.jpg

As I walked through the dungeons I heard Wigheard yell "Let me out of here peasant, or I'll nail you to the cross like that Christ you love so much!" I knelt by his cell where he was sitting and he continued "I am the true king. You have as much claim to the throne of Mercia as I have to the title of Roman Emperor!" I replied " and yet god has chosen me to wear the crown, while you and Seaxburh rot down here. Truly God has a strange way of treating the true king." I carried on with Wigheard yelling and cursing at my back. I looked upon Sexburh who only looked back with nothing but hatred in her eyes. And who could blame her? She was used as a tool to usurp her family and then discarded like trash when she was no longer useful. But it wasn't either of them I was here to deal with. I arrived at Osulf's cell in the dungeons, and unlocked it.

DojvQeK.jpg

Osulf was sitting there in the corner the exact same as when I left him with food when he was first imprisoned, as if he had been waiting all that time. I hauled him p by the collar of his rags, and ordered him to follow me. He asked whether it was time for justice to be served to which I replied "yes and no, heretic." 5 minutes later "Ex Bishop Osulf, you are accused of blasphemy, incitement to rebellion, treason and worst of all heresy. What say you in your defence?" It was a damning indictment, one Osulf could not withstand if this were a real trial. Of course the Witan were basically my puppets, so Osulf stood even less of a chance. Still he said "Before Constantine the great took over the Roman Empire, Rome was a pagan state. Constnatine showed them the light of Christianity, just as I am trying to show the catholics the light of Lollardy. If my beliefs turned out to be a major progression for Christianity not only would you be ashamed for killing me, you would be ashamed for killing a future saint! That is what I say in my defence." The witan's mouths dropped to the floor, and indeed I was impressed at such scholarly knowledge. But it was worthless, as far as I was concerned the heretic needed to burn so I nodded to chancellor Ealdred who then decreed "Ex Bishop Osulf, you are found guilty of blasphemy, incitement to rebellion, treason and heresy. Your sentence is to be hung from the neck until you are severely dead. Guards, take him out back." And so Osulf the heretic was sent to hell by the noose.

7D9zI8c.jpg

In addition I decided to make my son and heir the earl of Northampton. Somebody needed that earldom, in case the Essexians tried to march back. Besides that I would prefer both my sons have their own loyal men, than just one, especially as the two hate each-other. In addition, my son deserved a reward for his services during the war.

5HOYD6W.jpg

In order to purge heresy, I sent my bishop to Derby. I would prefer to just go in there and burn them all, but that could cause a second rebellion to arise from Northampton.

woQD7OE.jpg
ehFaBBJ.jpg

The Saxons kicked the Franks out of Saxony, and made a man named Widukind, who led the Saxon rebellion their king. Strangely enough the new king had a convert from a mythical far eastern land, which monks and scholars claim Rome used to trade with called Hindustan, as his heir. Why anyone would want to convert to any non-Christian religion is beyond me, but regardless maybe one day my descendants would bring the light of Christianity to this strange "Hindustan."

6dUWT4p.jpg

I decided to have Ealdred start riling the people up to start a war with Essex. I wanted revenge. If they had their way I would have been king of a rump state, not Mercia, so we'll see how they like other kingdoms trying to take their land!

UjDJssc.jpg

Under my and my stewards hard work, the financial deprivation of Mercia was fully resolved, and our treasury was back in triple digits.

vTHUHoB.jpg
1o3loHr.jpg
Hg8Yn74.jpg

I decided to do some work for a while and take a falcon out for a hunt. I very much enjoyed the experience, though I didn't eat too many rabbits which my bird caught.

eMKZKJP.jpg

A bard arrived and I was too afraid to anger anyone, so I simply let him stay.

wxgpna9.jpg

I replaced Ealdred with Beornmund, my second son. Ealdred was too slow, and Beornmund was not only more loyal to me, but also the most diplomatic man in all of Mercia. Not to mention it would distract him from his petty feud with Beorhtweald. And it's not like the bishop doesn't have more things to do, like preaching to the good laymen who attend his sermons.

PHDecUM.jpg

It seemed old Ealhred in Northumbria was launching a pre-emptive strike on his vassals. This came with little surprise as Northumbria had a hotbed of claimants to the throne, and it seemed he didn't want a repeat of what happened here in Mercia.

ngaJY8r.jpg
hwtt3iU.jpg
HXl1O4e.jpg

Ealhred's strike gave me an idea. Though I could do nothing about the Iceling's for now, Wigheard had died a year earlier and now his son Wigferth ruled Derby. As I had a claim on Derby due to their being only two living descendants of Wigheard aside from Wigferth left, and due to the fact I wanted as few rival claimants to Mercia as possible, I decided to revoke Derby, which the Witan and earls of Mercia agreed with.

TpsEDrA.jpg

The cur fled to Essex. Of course he did! Birds of a feather flock together after all. In this case the feather is the colour of treachery and backstabbing! Even more reason for me to annex this kingdom as soon as possible.

tOV9BHp.jpg

I decided to appoint Coernwulf's man the earl of Derby. Not only would it separate the two, but it might also give the earl of Oxford the idea I intend to be good to him, so he will be less likely to rebel.

8bomskQ.jpg
uVX2OjH.jpg

Under my diligent rule technological growths in Mercia flourished. We knew how to build better keeps, and improved how nobles are supposed to act. Soon we will have castles rather than hill forts, like I saw in Francia!

H7HMiYI.jpg

Speaking of Francia, heathens conquered Nurnberg. And all this was under a man who sought to restore the Western Roman empire! How can you restore the Western Roman Empire if you can't even defeat some satan worshippers? I was growing more and more disillusioned with this continental, whom I once desired to emulate for England!

caS6ejU.jpg
EPcg8dA.jpg

My court physician wished to grow more herbs for medicines, so I obliged her, and like lightning people's conditions in the hospital improved.

gKSmiLC.jpg

Beorthgyth was old enough to be sent to tutor, so I sent her to tutor with the earl of Oxford. Not only would this improve relations yet further, but it would also allow her to improve her skills in court intrigue, which as a future queen of Mercia, she would need if she didn't want to end up like Seaxburh.

uVJryUj.jpg

Once again Mildrith threw herself at my breeches, and once again I pushed her off and told her "I will not sleep with a mere peasant." To which she cried, but that's the truth for you.

yLiDDTg.jpg

Widukind was conquering vast parts of the infamous heathen land known as "Scandinavia." If he continued he could have enough men to invade Francia, or even cross the sea to here as my ancestors did all those centuries ago.

c6HwDnN.jpg

An Orthodox heresy has taken over Byzantium. This is what occurs when you don't bring the wrath of God upon heretics.

vuhe94d.jpg

It appears Ealhred wasn't smart enough with his purges, as civil war has broken out anyway, with York rising up. Some witan members advocated helping one side or another, but I saw zero benefit in either.

The heretics have won their war against King Karl "the great" and taken lands in Aquitaine as well as what remained of their holdings in Bavaria and crowned their leader as duke of Gascogne. Francia was increasingly becoming the laughing stock of Christian Europe.

cyhLn14.jpg

Meanwhile the people of Europe were starting to look to me as the bulwark against heresy and the leader of Christendom, and I was gaining fame throughout Europe. After all I had saved England from heresy in the battle of Macclesfield. In Muslim occupied Iberia the Visgoths drank to my name, in the German lands still held by Francia bishops prayed I would one day cross the sea, even as far east as Byzantine Anatolia people wanted me to defeat their heretics and heathens. And indeed had I any ships, I would cross the sea and put Francia under my protection, take land from the Muslims, kill that heretic in the mountains and reconquer my ancestral homeland of Saxony. Unfortunately I don't have ships.

My court physician suggested that I employ agents to start selling her herbs to the peasants to which I consented. Soon Tamworth was prospering with merchants all around attracted to my capital. Indeed I would say, as sinful as it is, I am proud of being the best king of Mercia in a while.

Beornmund finally got enough people to support me attacking Essex. Time for revenge...

Ah some excellent developments. Some very important steps in uniting the Anglo-Saxon realms.

BERNNOTH: chapter 5: The tragic war

pn8m88n.jpg

The king of Essex was allied to a variety of Celtic leaders, an Irish man, a Cornish man and a Welsh man. Put together the coalition easily outnumbered my forces, however I was not going to back down. Not after promising my vassals I would try and become Brytenwalda. Not after all the shenanigans of this most ungodly kingdom. The war plan was to attack the Welsh first, before rushing south to deal with the Cornish.

39JDkoK.jpg

The first battle of the war started off a resounding success. It occurred right underneath my walls of Tamworth. My archers rained down arrows from that wall, whilst my footmen, fought toe to toe with the enemy outside. The welsh had their flanks fall, however the centre was held by a vicious nomad from the edges of Europe who was a Powysian mercenary. He did quite the damage.

q38UPb2.jpg

It did not help that the leader of the right flank, marshal Bishop Cuthrith, died in the middle of battle. Did he die by being peppered with arrows? Did he die by being gutted by a welsh sword? Did he die of being punched to death by a hundred men? No, of all ways to die on a battlefield, Cuthrith died of old age. Not exactly a warriors death. Requiescat in pace.

ILoOWlI.jpg

With Cuthrith dead, the centre broke, the right was unable to do significant damage, and the savage eviscerated our left flank. Soon my troops were left fleeing for the hills, and I sent some archers with them to keep them safe.

BdEZhHK.jpg
ICRXUBS.jpg

I decided to borrow money from Jewish money lenders, who gave me 350 gold. I did not like taking money from the killers of Christ, but money was needed, to hire mercenaries if I was to win. I hired the Irish band, and gained 1800 men.

9NO44Jn.jpg

Unfortunately when the Mercenaries landed in Wessex. the coalition attacked them. As they weren't expecting an attack so far from the front lines, the coalition forces still led by the nomad welsh dog, scattered them with ease. The remnants started a marh towards Lyndsey where what remained of the regular army was stationed.

AJeOK9o.jpg
7QOBrNU.jpg

As the coalition had decided to lay siege to Canterbury which was legally under Mercian not Kentish control, my troops were ordered to march there to lift the siege. Meanwhile, back in Tamworth, Ealflaed, my court physician since my days as an earl has died. Luckily she recommended a man who worked at one of her apothecaries as both a herbalist and a surgeon to replace her before she died.

Zqet0Si.jpg
yWpqzBk.jpg

The battle of Dover was fought on farmlands, near the great white cliffs that look out to sea, that have deterred many an invader. We had slightly more men, but of course they had that horse riding savage. Our centre almost immediately broke under his pressure, while our flanks fared batter against their flanks, using a combination of infantry (left) and cavalry (right) charges. In the end, nobody could defeat the monster of Wales.

4KhvHFq.jpg

It was clear I'd need yet more mercenaries. I prayed to god that this was all worth it...

BVM6vAF.jpg

My now 3000 strong force marched on Bedford from London. The coalition had moved onto there after the fall of Canterbury. We had about twice as many men, but with how this war was going so far it could still end up going all wrong. Maybe Mercia wasn't ready to fight these nations yet.

UfWli3R.jpg
KVGdL1K.jpg

The good news is the savage from the east wasn't leading today. This time it was the king of Cornwall, a much less competent military commander. The left flank was torn apart by cavalry charges, which ran circles around their swordsmen. The slightly smaller centre wasn't upholding as great as the enemies centre, but certainly not as bad as when the heathen was leading them. One stealth attack by a group of infantry decimated the right flank as they desperately tried to nock arrows. The battle was a resounding success with 2 coalition soldiers dead for every Mercian.

40yb9Wr.jpg
Ciw3pPP.jpg

The mercenaries cost way too much so after Canterbury was liberated the Irish band was fired. The welsh and the Cornish tried to flee to Cornwall, however we were in hot pursuit, and met the celts in the skirmish at Dorchester. The celts were crushed, by a force ten times their size. One Athelweald distinguished himself during that battle, managing to jump off his mount which had been struck by an arrow, onto a charging enemy noble, swinging his sword through the air hitting the enemy in the face, landing in his saddle and absconding with his horse, in full sight of the battles commanders. I made a mental note to make Athelweald the earl of Essex.

Eroxn0z.jpg
nr6cbDf.jpg
8jFQODT.jpg

The Coalition once again tried to besiege Canterbury. This culminated in the battle of Sandwich where my mercenary cavalry simply duked it out with their mercenary cavalry. Though my centre was weak due to inferior numbers, my flanks were crushing the enemy as they always do. I was ordering one such regiment by sending my falcon to the commander, to deliver messages, and after many battles through the war of the five kings and this war, I now felt comfortable with fighting on the flat lands of England.

MfOKqKs.jpg

This was evident in the fact it was my regiment who killed the King of Cornwall, therefore taking Cornwall out of the war and scoring a significant tactical victory in the ensuing war!

ccnPvG1.jpg

The men of Powys arrived late to Sandwich, and as only 140 of them attacked my force 4 times as big across a river ( I ran out of money for the other mercenaries), they were easily routed. However, before they were routed, Athelweald managed to capture a very important person. Jeno Dezlo, the leader of the welsh Magyar mercenaries, and the savage nomad who had pestered me so much! And he was now in my hands. I did ask him if his father would ransom him (I needed more mercenaries more than I needed revenge), but he said even if he had the money no. So remembering all this horse lover had done to my troops, my war effort, and how he was a heathen who did the most depraved things one could imagine, I had him executed on the battlefield.

YSkYJOY.jpg

As I was one of the best commanders in Mercia, I decided to try and get over my fear of swords, put in the hard work for Essex, and take the field personally. I led the left flank. Opposing me was the king of Powys himself, no longer having his dog to do his bidding. I had 100 more men than him. The flanks fighting in cavalry easily crushed the Welsh, and I personally slew many a cavalry man, charging back and forth, thrusting with my spear, arcing with my sword, trampling with my horse etc.

z5zKR8t.jpg

But the King still held most of his troops in the centre. He set his troops up in a shield wall, which rendered the centre's arrow volleys all but useless. This meant once he got to the centre with his infantry, carnage of my centre occurred.

wLFk8D1.jpg

Meanwhile the battle had evolved into a bow and arrow shoot out, but I was still in my cavalry contingent. "NOCK! DRAW! AIM! LOOSE!" I bellowed at my archers, as me and my fellow cavalry overlooked them from our horses. I looked up to see our arrows flying off, but I saw something very different, then I saw nothing at all in my right eye, then nothing in my left, as I fainted as my troops yelled and wailed.

XEBx9Ko.jpg

Many days later, I was informed the sight of me falling from my horse missing an eye, killed our morale, and our troops tripped over each-other to evacuate the battlefield. My partaking in the battle had the exact opposite effect to what I wanted.

My court physician informed me I didn't have many days to live, so I called Beorthweald to me and gave him my final advice "Son, the court physician tells me, I am close to entering gods kingdom. But do not be afraid. I know you have always been paranoid, but do not be afraid. Know that though you don't believe, god loves you, and he will grant you your hearts desire if you work as hard as you do. Take off, my bandage, I would have you look at my real face, not this lie." Beorhweald did as instructed and asked "Bread father?" "No son, I am not hungry, and I would not enter purgatory with a single sin of gluttony weighing on my soul. Son, you must avenge all my troops against those accursed Essexians, but I'm not sure you can do that this war. You must become Brytenwalda and expand our dynasties power to protect Europe from those forces subversive to it. Hethens, heretics, Saracens, and Essexians." That prompted a laugh which I joined in. "Be good to your brother, but at the same time don't let his dynasty usurp ours! Now do you have any last words for me?" "No father." Beorthweald replied. "Alright then I fulfilled gods plan as told to me by that monk all those decades ago. Now- now I rest." And then the light faded from my remaining eye, until suddenly there was an exceedingly bright light.

2M72RTE.jpg

Jeez, why did you attack into that hornet's nest of an alliance?? The thousand men haven't been made who could hack that. You really should have waited for the coalition to start breaking apart.

Jeez, why did you attack into that hornet's nest of an alliance?? The thousand men haven't been made who could hack that. You really should have waited for the coalition to start breaking apart.
I was generally foolish enough, to think I could defeat the welsh, Cornish and Irish before they linked with each-other and the Essexians. Unfortunately I didn't account for them having pagan nomadic Jesus as a commander.

Things are all topsy-turvey and no mistake ... is this a war too far?

Things are all topsy-turvey and no mistake ... is this a war too far?

Mayhaps, but this is just a minor delay in the unification of the Anglo Saxon kingdoms, and their eventual maritime conquests!

Beorhtweald: Chapter 1: Ascending to the throne.

So my father, Beornnoth first non-Iceling king of Mercia is dead. Faded from existence. Like he did, I also aspire to become Brytenwalda but not for "God" or any other delusions, my late father had. And like him, I will also work, night and day, day and night to that dream, and I am also fearful of many things, but battle isn't one, it's all the spies constantly watching me. But just because I fear everyone is a spy doesn't mean I can't hold a great conversation with them. My father asked me to get revenge on Essex and I would, provided this syphilis doesn't take me.

NnOBciw.jpg

However right now my troops were too small, and the earls didn't have too many men to give. I came to the conclusion that I must do what my father would have skinned me alive fr, and give up. That plunged Mercia even more into debt.

UWAihGQ.jpg

The earl of Oxford demanded gavelkind succession be restored. King Offa had made the realm primogeniture meaning even if we conquered say, Wessex, the realm would not spilt up. However it seemed my vassals like chaos. I obliged him as I could ill afford a civil war, and it wasn't very harmful in the short term as I only have one daughter and am not likely to have any more children with this syphilis plaguing me.

https://i.imgur.com/mKEHC1y.jpg[img]

Speaking of civil war, the Merovingian dynasty had been restored in Middle Francia which was renamed to Austrasia. In Aquitaine there was a similar revolt to restore them in west Francia. It seemed the Franks were tired of the failures under the Carolingian dynasties' "Karl 'the great'."

[img]https://i.imgur.com/tjcmr3d.jpg

My spymaster advised me to build a post system. I smacked my head with my palm and said "And how do you propose we do that when we're both broke and indebt to Jews Genius?"

kq6IVji.jpg

Bishop Osred had finished converting the heretics in Derby. I cared not what fake being in the sky these peasants believed in, but if they didn't convert they might rebel, and depose and kill me. I sent Osred to finish the job in my personal earldom of Northampton.

mWqvtjQ.jpg

As I suspected! There are spies all over this castle! I caught one myself, who was watching over me when I woke up. I took him out by the wrist, told a guard to tie him up, moved him to the most public place, gathered the court and witan and said "ladies and noblemen! This man is a spy! He was watching over me as I slept! As I'm sure there are more of you among the audience, now this is your fate if you are caught." Then I struck him once in the face, once in the stomach, kicked him in the groin, and as he whimpered put my hands around his neck and strangled him. I did not want to behead him, as I was afraid my executioner was also a spy and would only pretend to behead him.

fBUMMWU.jpg

I was afraid the syphilis was going to take me tomorrow, and so asked Ealdred who was my personal court physician when I was but an earl in Northampton, to try something new to save my life. I felt amazing after a naked sprint through the woods. Like I was releasing my inner animal.

03jdmE7.jpg

The king of Wessex offered ten gold for one of the earls who had thought for Wigheard during the war. As I wanted to be friendly with that king, I gleefully accepted.

KsIlX4j.jpg

I decided to use the money to revoke the county of Leicester. Though Tamworth is and always will be my home, I felt it would be useful to own the ex capital of Mercia. In addition as Leicester was still held by Seaxburh daughter of king Offa, she could still rebel to usurp me. Well she was in jail but either of her sisters, or her regent could still do so!

51yFFKO.jpg

My fellow plotters agreed to support me in revoking Leicester only on the condition Seaxburh is removed from the dungeons. I ransomed her to herself. Wasn't like she would be countess of Leicester for much longer, and it was better she not have the money to raise troops.

37iGARj.jpg

The ultimatum was issued, and refused, so I declared war on Seaxburh! I ordered the earl of Derby and the earl of Lyndsey to raise troops, meanwhile, I raised troops from Tamworth and Northampton. We immediately marched to Leicester, the only place she could flee was Northumbria.

L1oVnU5.jpg

We started by overwhelming her tiny flanks, which left the centre exposed to our cavalry charges. With nobody protecting their flanks they didn't have any room to swing their swords, so they too fell, along with all hopes of an Iceling restoration.

Z6JIoQv.jpg

Meanwhile my scum I have the displeasure of having to call "brother", found out at one point Mercia owned the earldom of Amounderness. I would secure that earldom, but not while i'm finishing off King Offa's spawn.

PtzPSQS.jpg

I decided to betroth my daughter to the heir to the earldom of Westmorland. Westmorland borders Amounderness, so we could attack them one after the other, if we so pleased, which would put me that much closer to Brytenwalda.

dnDrAcL.jpg

After I besieged Leicester, I captured the sister of Seaxburh. As I wanted as few claimants to Mercia as possible, she was tossed off the battlements so she would die.

nCvLpK4.jpg

Orthodox Christians had retaken their land from Iconoclast worshippers. This seems petty to me, just fools bickering over who's the most stupid fool, neither of them were right in the end.

YZOO7XQ.jpg

Seaxburh publically renounced ownership of Leicester and fled the country. She was still dangerous, out there in the wide world. The promise of her hand, and with it a kingdom could entice many a man to swear his sword to her and come to lop my head off and stick it on a spear on top of the battlements. But without Leicester to provide taxes and food, that would be a lot more difficult.

PIRr1BY.jpg

Athelweald who had obviously never been granted the earldom of Essex on account of us losing that war, was instead made earl of Northampton. I felt a king needed to personally watch over the ex seat of the former ruler of Mercia.

Zp4xWXu.jpg

The court began gossiping that I had gone mad! Of course not! It was obvious that they were all spies sent by the Umayyad caliph who all wanted to make me emir of Seville! How could anybody deny such logic! And I needed to double my efforts in order for him to agree to do so! I'll have him and th e court know me and my syphilis are entirely healthy and normal!

Oxco29B.jpg

One of those courtiers offered to go hunting or to take the falcon out with me. Since the falcon was probably going to peck my eyes out I decided to opt for the hunt instead. At least if the courtier was a spy as he obviously was, I could shoot an arrow in his back!

FWp7o4q.jpg

But then my horse threw me off it's back! Obviously this was all an elaborate and deliberate attempt by the horse to assassinate me! I shot at the horse but it ran away. When I returned to castle Tamworth, I took the falcon out to look for it as I didn't want him coming back and trying again. Unfortunately we never found the horse, for all I know it could still be plotting to kill me!

SmIeVug.jpg

Aelf and my daughter were married, and I made sure all their kids would be my dynasty. I asked for the money, as I wanted it for what came next.

PUMvCs3.jpg

The queen of Lothian, itself a state that separated from the kingdom of Northumbria, who owned Amounderness, had only 300 men and one ally in Wales, who was currently being conquered by a host invasion. War was declared for my claim on the earldom of Amounderness.

PoIlKOh.jpg

Word had come from Austrasia, that the Saxons were now using boats. Boats were not only faster than foot, but could also come here to England and land Saxon raiders here. The men who sailed such boats called themselves "Vikings" meaning pirates. Norse men are also Vikings.

qAklcVK.jpg

King Karl the Great had finally done something great which wasn't reversed, and put down the revolt trying to Restore the Merovingian dynasty. It mattered little, his kingdom was a shadow of it's former self, most likely smaller than when his younger brother was still alive and in charge of what is now Austrasia.

caUuyfl.jpg
h3lUTlF.jpg
UTMUhDz.jpg

Speaking of Austrasia, king Theoderic died without an heir. However, the Merovingian dynasty was not dead yet, as before he died, he managed to get his wife pregnant. It was doubted that the new King Heinrich, would step aside for the baby boy when he is born.

sZ97Iq0.jpg
odqxHsZ.jpg
kCEUbld.jpg

After the siege of Amounderness, joined by Northumbrian troops who wished to make Lothian pay tribute to Northumbria, we assaulted a church near the capital, which we easily took, as well as Appleby castle in Westmorland. However the defenders were able to repulse us, but whatever their morale was gone, and it was mostly Northumbrians who died, and the mercians who died were probably traitors who jumped on enemy swords anyway.

RyRpuaT.jpg
hMg0MBy.jpg
LcoWX0f.jpg

My daughter and heir caught the flu. Worse I was worried people were trying to kill her. I sent her as well as Ealdred into hiding. I believed he would try and poison her, but if I didn't send them into hiding, my daughter would die of the flu, then my brother whom I hate more than anything in the world, including these damned spies which were probably his anyway, would inherit and steal these lands from our dynasty.I could not let that happen!

2CtXtRs.jpg
lqn9d62.jpg

The queen of Lothian gave me control of Amounderness, and I named my son in law earl. My hope was that he would raise troops and attack for Westmorland. If not I will try to kill the earl there so he inherits, or attack for him when the king of Northumbria is either too weak or dead.
