Stellaris Dev Diary #95: Humanoids Species Pack

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. As said last week, today's dev diary is not about the Cherryh update at all, but rather something much more imminent: The Humanoids Species Pack

Humanoids Species Pack
Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, there has been a lot of clamoring for more portraits and another ship-set like the one we added in Plantoids. Because of the amount of coder and content designer time we're putting into the major overhauls in the Cherryh update, we ended up with a lot of extra art time, and so we decided to oblige. Back in the Heinlein update, we added a bunch of free humanoid portraits that proved to be immensely popular - close to half of games started is with some variant of humanoid. Combine with there seeming to be a demand for a more 'classic western sci-fi' ship-set with sleeker lines and curves than the Mammalian one, and the design for the Humanoid Species Pack was born. Our artists have been quietly working away at it behind the scenes, and now it's almost ready.

So what's in the Humanoid Species Pack? Here is the feature list:
- 10 new Humanoid portraits
- A completely new ship set inspired by classic western sci-fi
- A new city set for Humanoids
- A new pre-scripted empire, the Fanatic Authoritarian/Materialist Voor Technocracy, with a portrait inspired by the 'loading screen aliens' from our own official art
- 3 new advisor voices offering alternative takes on existing ethics, based on the United Nations of Earth ('Dignified Xenophile'), Commonwealth of Man ('Disciplined Militarist') and Voor Technocracy ('Ruthless Materialist'). Samples from each of the new voices has been attached to the bottom of this post.
- 3 new music tracks that are remixes of classic Stellaris songs

Of course, the 5 Humanoid portraits that are already in the base game will remain free and available to everyone.

The Humanoids Species Pack will come out on December 7th, 2017 and will cost $7.99 US dollars or your regional equivalent. For those who want to buy it right now, pre-orders are available through the Paradox Shop. To pre-order, follow this link.

Next week we'll get back to talking about the Cherryh update on the topic of doomstacks (for real this time). Until then, I leave you with these awesome screenshots:

Sigh...
This wasn't "criticism" and the devs didn't listen to it as such. Some people wanted "disciplined military" adivisors because they are a bunch of real life jingoists who cannot accept it when militarism is represented by raging furor and not cold steel.

It's one thing to wish more diversity in advisor voices, and it's another thing to hate an advisor voice because of your political agenda.

?
Militarism *isn't* represented by raging furor. It has nothing to do with political agenda. Nor with being good people or what not. Spartans used to do some terrible things, but they weren't *raging*. Societies which used to display berserker-like behavior in warfare (think Gaesatae vs Roman legions) didn't have the kind of structured, drilled armies that are usually associated with militarism. You just can't militarize society if your soldiers are undisciplined. It's kinda the opposite, to be honest.

I really love the new VO's and the Ships. They are basically exactly what I wanted!

An not to look a Gift Wiz in the mouth, but do you think we could get another VO for the UNE? Honestly I love the new Commonwealth, and UNE VIR's. I can give or take with the Voor one. :)

Militarist description :
The only true virtues are courage and discipline, and channeled properly they can overcome any obstacle. Therein lies true strength; force withheld, a promise made.

Courage and DISCIPLINE

So no, the current Militarist voice does not generally fit.

I think we will definitely keep adding new voice packs. It seems to be a generally liked feature, and adding different spins on ethics is a nice way to expand on player roleplaying.
Is there any idea/thoughts about having the voice packs react uniquely to some of the major events/decisions? I am thinking about synth uprising, horizon signal, encountering the Drake, Wanderlust, pre-FTL probes, finishing a a Galactic wonder, finding the home world of the precursors? I know it would be a lot of work for the writers, but.....it would be....marvelously awesomely legendarily pretty neat.

Or the Friendship Pack. :p
Friendship ? You really think their horns will be for something other than impaling the filthy Xenos, and that their hooves won't strictly be used for destroying inferior Xenos' buildings ?

Oh, why not. I'm feeling generous right now and you asked nicely.

Will any portraits use phenotypes? I always found it weird that only humans have them. Also, is there any chanse for a non-humanoid sexual dimorphism in the future?

There are some top quality mods that add dimorphism to a whole load of the aliens already in the game. They're very good really., and they're split up individually, so you can pick and choose which ones you want.

Looks cute. Not enough furries, though.

Looks amazing! Question though, if your art team have the timr and resources, have you guys ever considered releasing a "ship pack" with just a bunch of alt ship designs for the phenotypes?

So far we have Dragons, evil Demons, Wizards and magic Trees, now we get Space Dwarfs and Space Orcs.
Something tells me that the next Update will relocate the whole game from space to middle earth.

Honestly, i get that Stellaris isn't some kind of "hard sci-fi" game and that everyone is free not to use this cosmetic stuff, but it would be nice if sometime in the future we'd get some actual Sci-Fi content instead of more Space Narnia ;)

I think you are selectively forgetting rather a lot of the content that came out alongside those things you are talking about. Unless I missed the Narnia book where Aslan builds a Dyson Sphere. :p

EDIT: Seem like Space Dwarves are there, after going through the pages, so yay!

Well since I see we now have Space Orcs (Shadowrun style Ork from the look of it), will the humanoid pack include Space Dwarves or at least some humanoid who sport a glorious beard ?

Need something better then that portrait (would say Space Bat, but always seem odd to me to call it a bat, due to the heavy physique they have) that just come before the Space Horse in mammalian for my Squat Homeworlds, as they are one of the few portrait that seem to have beard and a hearty constitution.
