Stellaris Dev Diary #95: Humanoids Species Pack

Hello everyone and welcome to another Stellaris dev diary. As said last week, today's dev diary is not about the Cherryh update at all, but rather something much more imminent: The Humanoids Species Pack

Humanoids Species Pack
Over the last year or so, and especially in the last few months, there has been a lot of clamoring for more portraits and another ship-set like the one we added in Plantoids. Because of the amount of coder and content designer time we're putting into the major overhauls in the Cherryh update, we ended up with a lot of extra art time, and so we decided to oblige. Back in the Heinlein update, we added a bunch of free humanoid portraits that proved to be immensely popular - close to half of games started is with some variant of humanoid. Combine with there seeming to be a demand for a more 'classic western sci-fi' ship-set with sleeker lines and curves than the Mammalian one, and the design for the Humanoid Species Pack was born. Our artists have been quietly working away at it behind the scenes, and now it's almost ready.

So what's in the Humanoid Species Pack? Here is the feature list:
- 10 new Humanoid portraits
- A completely new ship set inspired by classic western sci-fi
- A new city set for Humanoids
- A new pre-scripted empire, the Fanatic Authoritarian/Materialist Voor Technocracy, with a portrait inspired by the 'loading screen aliens' from our own official art
- 3 new advisor voices offering alternative takes on existing ethics, based on the United Nations of Earth ('Dignified Xenophile'), Commonwealth of Man ('Disciplined Militarist') and Voor Technocracy ('Ruthless Materialist'). Samples from each of the new voices has been attached to the bottom of this post.
- 3 new music tracks that are remixes of classic Stellaris songs

Of course, the 5 Humanoid portraits that are already in the base game will remain free and available to everyone.

The Humanoids Species Pack will come out on December 7th, 2017 and will cost $7.99 US dollars or your regional equivalent. For those who want to buy it right now, pre-orders are available through the Paradox Shop. To pre-order, follow this link.

Next week we'll get back to talking about the Cherryh update on the topic of doomstacks (for real this time). Until then, I leave you with these awesome screenshots:

Since there are space goats, I would say it's World of Warcraft in space. :)
Except Satyr in Warcraft are rather rare beastmen in warhammer are far more common.

Since you guys seem very excited about the new voices, here's a bonus sample of the Commonwealth of Man themed one. I really think Björn (Metal King) and our content designers did a fantastic job creating these and making them distinct from the existing ones for the same ethic.
Awesome, but I would have gone with sir instead of captain, makes for a more hierarchical command structure, also since you likely aren't captain but some higher official.

?
Militarism *isn't* represented by raging furor. It has nothing to do with political agenda. Nor with being good people or what not. Spartans used to do some terrible things, but they weren't *raging*. Societies which used to display berserker-like behavior in warfare (think Gaesatae vs Roman legions) didn't have the kind of structured, drilled armies that are usually associated with militarism. You just can't militarize society if your soldiers are undisciplined. It's kinda the opposite, to be honest.
In fact most raging fighters are based on stories told by their enemies.

Oh, why not. I'm feeling generous right now and you asked nicely.
The rhythm of the words seems a bit off but aside from that it makes playing the united nations of earth seem much cooler.

2.0 ? SO IT WILL BE HUGE. Do you plan an beta for player feedback ?
I can't wait to see more DD on this.
I can't wait but it seem it will take month or year.
I remember well one of my first MMO made by a french company : 4 or 5 year between the annoucement and the launch...
I hope swedish are quicker!
2.0 is an update, no new standalone release.
My bet is still march '18.

Commonwealth VIR sounds great! The old one sounded good too but said the silliest things.

Hey @Wiz on the subject of possible future Shipsets, maybe having sub-variants based around Ethos would be a cool direction to look?these would add/remove/replace bits of the base shipsets, with you clicking a checkbox to enable/disable them(with multiple being able to be applied at once, with some limits of course), on top of the base selection.

For example; it would make sense for militarists to have a more menacing design compared to the base shipset, materialist to have boxy/simplistic ships, and Spiritualist to have fancy/artsy ones(habitats looking more temple/cathedral-like), and so on for example.

Machine Empires having windowless versions of their creator's art style(which would often be the materialist I imagine, but you never know), and maybe having some extra bits added on("sensors" to "replace" the windows?) would help make Machine Empires have their own flavor.(though Assimilators would likely still have windows, but maybe still have those extra bits?)

So far we have Dragons, evil Demons, Wizards and magic Trees, now we get Space Dwarfs and Space Orcs.
Something tells me that the next Update will relocate the whole game from space to middle earth.

Honestly, i get that Stellaris isn't some kind of "hard sci-fi" game and that everyone is free not to use this cosmetic stuff, but it would be nice if sometime in the future we'd get some actual Sci-Fi content instead of more Space Narnia ;)

Why fantasy element can't be add in a sci fi game ? Really sci fi universe isn't only space opera. It's open at all kind of universe.
Science fiction is about imagination what could be the 'future'.
So what tell you a magical specie travel among the star with space unicorn doesn't fit in a space game ? Your lack of imagination. I don't want a copy paste from Star wrek. Both of their universes are just space opera.

Thank you for the pizza ships! Hopefully I can finally use something from the base game for a ship set since all the other ones have WHY!?! issues =P

(the normal ships are great too I just don't like the turrets nonsensical placement sometimes.)

There is one who look like the devil, hope there is one looking like an angel because I prefer angels.

Shame I won't be purchasing this due to the Cherryh update. Even if it comes out before, that's not the kind of conduct I want to condone.

Looks nice though. :I

Edit: Unless you plan on forcing me at gun-point to buy this, your disagreement is meaningless, so save the click.
