HOI4 Dev Diary - Sound, Music and Art for Tiger

Welcome to another Dev Diary for Waking the Tiger! Today is a dev diary of sights and sounds, so first I’ll be handing over the mic to @Metal King to talk about what we are doing on the sound front.

Sounds and Music
Hey guys, @Metal King here! Once again I’m back to talk about audio improvements and also shortly about the new music which is included in the expansion.

For this I’m going to talk a bit about improvements we have done for this expansion which has been focused on combat ambient! Some time ago, even before we started working on the current expansion, I was in the Workshop page to look around for what kind of audio mods the community liked. While going through various mods which mostly were about music, which was not surprising, I found a certain mod that had exchange all my assets and added more audio assets with more focus towards combat. It made me realize that guys would love to have more sfx whenever your troops are in combat in the game. :)

So I started trying convince all involved that this was something we want to add for a upcoming expansion and that you guys would enjoy this addition a lot! After that everything got approved we started to create new audio assets that were going to work more as a ambient for combat and which you would also be able to hear even if you don’t see any animations on a certain distance (the screaming is actually the HoI team being subjected to some very awful puns). So in the end if you have enough units in combat the game will start triggering these ambient tracks that not only increase in volume the more units are in the combat, but also trigger different sound effects depending on what kind of units you have in your division. So if you’re sending in a division with infantry and AA-artillery you will start hearing flak cannons shooting in the background during combat or if there is a lot of tanks, well then you get to hear more tanks.

I’m can write all I want about how the various ambient tracks sounds like and how it will play in the game, but I think it is better show you a demo that I made during the development so can instead listen to the results. Also in this video there is a sample from one of the new track that is written by Andreas Waldetoft and is recorded by orchestra in Budapest. The two other tracks are written by another composer with collaboration with Head of Music.

Art and Visuals
One of Waking the Tiger’s main focuses are the generals, which are now much more interesting and central to the gameplay. The Chain of Command feature also meant that most playthroughs should see significantly more generals being used. To make them feel more distinct and prevent the appearance of clone armies, we have added a large number of new generic portraits to the game - about 30 new ones spread across all continents, with Europe and Asia receiving the lion’s share.

Of course, we have also added historical portraits for the named Generals of China as well as some new leader art for the alt-history branches of Germany.

With the new focus tree (-branches), we also had a lot of fun with new focus icons. I think the Japanese Kraken and the Great Red Menace really knock it out of the park in terms of quality.

Also, have a look at the new national spirit icons you will see in the game. Some of these are part of a sequence of national spirits that show various levels, like Manchukuo’s Low Legitimacy or Nationalist China’s Inflation.

To add more visual flavor to China there is also also new 3d models. For China and the warlords there isn't really a lot of historical tanks that we normally do, so we decided instead to flesh out infantry related models. We have new cool cavalry models (with swords!) as well as artillery pieces and other things to make them stand out. Check out these awesome high-poly renders:

She was for WW2, but she was unable to sway Truman's administration during the civil war, unfortunately. Stilwell was just a prick.

Personally I hope that if relations get good enough and corruption + inflation ends in China, the US will be happy enough to send enough aid to China during the civil war and help it reconstruct after WW2. Plus launching Operation Beleaguer to offer some military assistance. If Nationalist China is victorious, they'll become good trade partners with America.
Madame Soong was part of the reason why the anti corruption/inflation fight failed in the civil war era as she protected her elite family friends from graft investigations. So it's a double edged sword. The US sent plenty of aid to NatChi during the civil war. Supplies was embezzled by Soong's elite friends and the troops on the ground did not receive proper pay. Corrupt generals claimed wages for non existent soldiers while not paying their troops. Inflation skyrocketed as the KMT printed money to pay their troops rather than tackle the corruption problem. The influx of foreign aid had the reverse effect of increasing inflation (similar to how Spain had inflation due to the gold mines) which did NOT make things better. In addition much of the aid weapons actually contributed to military defeat. This is primarily due to the aid being the wrong type (tanks/weapons ill suited for counter-insurgency in poor weather/terrain. expensive weapons like planes and bombs which on paper is significant aid but as evident in Vietnam can't bomb an insurgency to defeat).

The poor morale/discipline of underpaid troops meant they stole from the peasants which did not win over their hearts and minds (food for soldiers was stolen by generals and sold on the market, troops had little choice but to steal food from the peasants). Add to that forced conscription during WW2 from southwest china where troops were marched to the front without winter clothes or proper weapons and told to pick up weapons from others who fell in front of them (a military necessity which helped hold the front) didn't do any favors with winning over the population's hearts or minds.

The US also convinced surrendering IJA troops to 'switch sides' and join the NRA army in northeastern China (aka Japan sent expeditionary forces to KMT in the civil war). This also didn't help the KMT win the hearts and minds of the population in northeastern china (or any anti-japanese resistance cells that weren't yet pro-communist for that matter).

Prior to the Sino-Japanese war it was the elites backing the KMT that forced the end of the 1st United Front when the moderates in both CPC/KMT were sidelined. Jiang was told to either end the alliance or stop receiving funding (and have rival warlords get funding). This basically tells you how much control the elites had within the KMT.

If the KMT were victorious (which is possible militarily if say Jiang's best and most reliable troops weren't encircled early in the war and some of the missteps above were avoided) they would need to spend at least a decade on stabilizing the domestic situation and there would need to be a purge of the corrupt elite (which would be very hard seeing as Madame Soong was part of the problem, not the solution). No amount of US aid would have been able to resolve these problems. See also Afghan/South Vietnam/Iraqi governments' failure to win the hearts and minds of the population despite US support.

A realistic anti-corruption drive would need to require either Jiang being sidelined by another warlord who was more reformist (Yan Xishan potentially), his divorce from Soong (a political marriage so possible), or his son Jiang Jingguo (a reformist who wanted to jail Soong's political friends for corruption) taking power early. Soong was Jingguo's step-mother and during the civil war opposed Jingguo's reform attempts so Jingguo taking power would allow reforms to be pushed through. It would also trigger a mini-civil war within the KMT as rival warlords would get backing from the corrupt to try and stop the reform.

Going back to how the KMT might be victorious: the reason it would require Jiang's best troops to not be encircled is because those were under his personal command. As such they weren't subject to the graft/embezzlement of other generals (so morale is much higher). In addition many warlords didn't want to contribute most of their troops to fight the communist. There was two reasons for this. One is their troops were too strong on paper (due to claiming wages for non existent troops) and they knew if they were ordered to battle by Jiang they'd be ordered based on wrong assumptions by central command of troop strength. The other reason is their independence from central control depends on having troops (warlords can't exist without troops) so if they lost troops they would lose their warlordship. In fact many warlords in the civil war sat out the conflict entirely and many defected to the communists side after Jiang's personal troops were defeated and he fled to Taiwan.

On the topic of planes NatChi had an airplane manufacturing facility producing Allied airplane designs (under license) in WW2. Only a few hundred were produced but they were nonetheless. I was googling for tech team pictures for an airplane TT for Darkest Hour and I came across a book which described the airfield in question and it mentioned they built allied airplanes. Don't recall the source anymore.

@podcat I've been looking through the dev diaries and if all goes well with the monarchy restoration theme (which I expect it will) would are Russia, France, and Spain among the possible first choices?
 
Do we have any chance to see:
1. Japanese SNLF 3D model with blue marine uniform as we had in HoI3??
2. Japanese Kamikaze pilots and soldiers with white head bandage??
The SNLF didn't wear blue uniforms into combat and I don't think there's any need to show soldiers wearing the hachimaki either. They were not worn in combat by Japanese infantry (at least not to any significant degree) and you can't see the kamikaze pilots in their cockpits.

So im clearly going to choose the non-historical German Focus Tree every time just because of that THICC ass moustache
For me its the option to hang people after the civil war. "Hang you dirty Nazi scum, for the crimes largely not yet committed"
 
Will there be a diary on the soviets vs democratic germany chain? And is it possible without tag switching to play as the Soviets in that matchup? It sounds fun to try. Do you think the game will every have some mechanic where you can choose which narrative branch of their focus trees other nations will pursue at start?
 
The Kuomintang ministers. There's a lot more now, and I'm very excited to assemble a good cabinet. :) Note Madame Soong's unique position. I wonder what she buffs?
PP bonus and constant relationship increase bonus with the US I reckon

Having more ministers like that with unique effects not just for China would be great to add some more WW2 flavour to the game.

Currently the fonts of Characters added to the ROC flag are too modern
TRP and Darkest Hour used variations on the KMT flag. The font thing I used in DH Full for Anhui/Zhili Clique so it's not that bad. It's good to see them use KMT flags per historic imho. Was surprised to see that in stream. Just a side commentary.

You can always change the flags, for example, putting the ones that were used on HOI2 (I personally found them cool)
 
This is a bit late, but can any developers answer this question? Will the ROC be able to feature basic infantry in the blue-grey fatigues with the military cap? Basically the Calvary but in the blue-grey color scheme, like in the Walking Tiger Splashes.

It looks like that all the previews show the ROC using Tan fatigues and German Helmets as well as a large backpack which seems to be based off the 300 Heroes in the battle of Shanghai. I ask this because I'm much more used to the ROC using the Chinese Fatigues with the caps rather then helmets in either Blue-Grey (early Civil war to WW2) Color or Tan (post WW2 and last half of the Civil War). Most Dramas and the Historical Museums often depicts soldiers in the outfit below in either Blue-Grey or light Tan.

Looks like a suitable candidate for an in-game Nationalist Chinese general.

Shouldn't be too hard to get rid of the background and paste it over the default HoI4 portrait background, just saying...
