They did say in one of the streams the colonists will not go to other domes for services. I guess we'll just have to tech rush larger domes to be able to fit more services in.

Yeah that's kinda lame. Doesn't really make much sense, you'd think they'd want us to have as much customisation for domes as possible. We're going to be stuck building unimaginative domes because we can't specialise them to our hearts content. Hopefully they fix that at some point.

Well, given that there will reportedly be something like 5 different sizes of domes, I'm fairly sure the larger ones will allow for quite a lot of specialisation!

And since they'll have different shapes (and the buildings inside will come in different sizes) I reckon there will be a fair amount of variety, too. :)

Once you get grasp of game mechanic, you will find out that specialising domes isn't that hard. I won't describe game mechanic because it would've been too long, but maybe this will help you:

  1. People's needs depend on their perks and flaws. So no gamblers in your dome, no need for casino.
  2. For every dome is possible to set people filter. So you can forbid gamblers to live in specific dome, meaning they won't move in and those already in will move out (if they have somewhere else to go).

Except there are some things you are going to want in pretty much every dome. You are going to need a place for your colonists to live, you need someplace for them to get food (diner/grocer), and some place to get medical care (infirmary). It won't be as big of a deal once you get access to larger domes (and have the resources to build them), but it kind of limits the already limited space in the small domes.

Pretty much this. You start with a small dome and have to build the basic necessities and then you build a bigger one later on and you still have to build the basics but you're also given maybe two or three triangles of things you can be imaginative with, maybe a mine and a casino and that's basically it. There's no building a dome specifically for mining or for farming, you're just building a claustrophobic playpen each time.

It looks fun nonetheless but there's definitely an inherit design flaw.

Well, I'm not sure for what you aim. You want big middle dome with homes and services and several small domes around it with farms, mines and industry? I'm afraid this won't happen any time soon.

I aggree with Darkstar616 because that's exactly what I had in mind, too, and what I think would be the logic layout in a real mars colony. One dome for living quarters and services, one dedicated to farms, another one for leisure, etc.
Too bad you have to fill half of each dome with the same buildings. :(

Seen a few gameplay videos.

Looks like both tunnels and inter-dome transport shuttles are options for moving your colonists about.

In the last episode of Paradox Extra, the two casters also told me you could set your dome to only house specific people.

I'm willing to bet that we end up spending as much time managing the lives of our denizens as we do actually constructing and maintaining the colony.

Well, there may be levels of medical treatment, or at least specialisations.

Look at it this way - any modern office building should have a sick room with basic first aid stuff and somewhere to lie down, and may employ a nurse or paramedic to run it. But if you need serious treatment, you get transported to a hospital. The basic stuff each dome needs is probably just that (though likely at a higher level than a mere sick room), with specialist higher level medical facilities as an option that you may not need to put in every dome.

I admit to ignorance about the game from a personal standpoint, not having yet played it. However, in the "Let's Play" streams from Nikki and Suzi they promise to build a Human Management (per Logan's Run) Dome. That means they have to get people to move there, which to me means we can sort of customize domes. Like Research Dome will only allow Scientists in, although yes, they will still need food, farms and fun.

That sounds really disappointing. The natural way to specialize domes to me would be to make living domes, industry domes, entertainment domes... Have you played the game already? i remember something in a stream about people being able to move between domes if they are close enough.

No I haven't play the game, but I watched streams. Yes people can move between domes, but it is meant literally, they will pack all their belongings and move to another dome to live there.

Domes still can be specialized, but instead of macro (will I put residential dome or indutry dome there) it is micro (will I put factory or residency and three mines there).

That is a real bummer. One can always hope for mods, apparently it should be fully moddable, but having to build a bunch of micro colonies really doesn't sound appealing.
