Greetings!

Once again we will scour the tomes in our cartographer’s office! In the last DD we visited the Baltics, in this one we’re heading further up north – to the land of the Finns, a land of a thousand lakes and bear-gods.

As for Finland, the main reason for us doing a map update was the poor definition in the area. Anyone who has moved armies in the region knows that the pathing, at the best of times, can be quite strange – with armies often taking massive detours to reach their destination. The main contributing factor to this was the massive size of the provinces, and that they were connected to each other in illogical ways. As you can see, almost all provinces in the area have been cut up rather significantly (its rather subtle, but what constitutes ‘Pohjanmaa’ in the new image is actually three Counties). The average power of the area has not gone up significantly though, with most Counties containing at most two holdings (some even contain only one). What has gone up though is the enjoyment while playing in the area!

Code:
- Map Update to Finland
    - 8 new provinces in Finland, improving mobility and spread noticeably in the area
    - 2 new duchies in Finland (Ostrobothnia and Savonia)
    - 1 new province in Lapland, in the duchy of Kola

Please note that the time between Dev Diaries will be irregular, as we’re very early in the development cycle.

So the rumors that you guys are finnishing the game are true, then. I'm looking forward to a new beninning for the CK series.

I think it's just a word play like "polishing up the map" with improvements in Poland.

I believe it was stated how devs are deliberately showing us areas which don't actually have anything to do with the upcoming expansion.
Where did they state that? I checked the previous 2 dev diaries and even skimmed the dev posts and couldn't find anything stating that. Was it on twitter or something?

I mentioned it in a post somewhere, that we are specifically showing map revisions first, because they are "neutral features" of the expansion.

I hope that Rus/Russia will be the next target for update!

First Estonia and now Finland... I'm pleased, thank you Paradox. As others have pointed out some province choices seem little odd (at least make Kuopio and Joensuu swap places). I would also change name of Kajaani to Kainuu. Kainulaiset (people of Kainuu) were one of historical subgroups of Finns (like savolaiset(Savo), karjalaiset(Karelia), hämäläiset(Häme) and suomalaiset (Varsinais-Suomi) etc.). Term Kajaanilaiset (people of Kajaani) has no similar historical connotation. Even nowadays Kainuu is official Finnish name of region and Kajaani is just it's largest city .

The word Kainuu also has rather interesting etymology:

Edit:
I assume that the choice of the name may be based on the fact that after Kajaani's castle/Kajaneborg was built there in 1600s Swedish officials and their records started to call whole area Kajana(land) which is derived from old Russian name Kajánij (which in turn was derived from Kainuu), even though Finns (who actually lived there) used and still use name Kainuu.

Finland is nice, but will we ever have a North Africa rework?

When will you focus on the core of the game? This is Crusader Kings, not Crusader Finns!
