Dear All,

Loving the game so far and slowly figuring out the game mechanics.

I figured out that one of the main contributors to needing maintenance is dust. As far as I can tell, all extractors (concrete, air, water etc.) cause dust, as do spaceships taking off and landing and (I assume, haven't seen them yet) Dust storms.

Is this a simple case of just building stuff as far away as reasonably possible from these sites to avoid extra maintenance? Is there a dustyness range guide somewhere?

Most building need maintenance. They will accumulate dust slowly. About one maintenance for 10 sol for most building. Extractors, rockets and dust storm increase the dust more quicly. If you use a wire to connect your first extractor to a solar panel, you will see the closer part of the wire getting more and more dusty.

When you place an extractor you see an area around the ghost of the extractor. I think, it is the zone where the extractor will produce dust.

How to avoid? By adding that info to the manual...
Oh wait.... no manual.

You could avoid it by playing the tutorial...
Oh, just wait a minute.... No tutorial either.

You can learn from "tooltips" though.
Or the incomplete wiki.

You even have to figure out how to connect buildings to the electricity and water supplies properly.

It may not be in-game, but paradox sponsored a beautiful tutorial done by Quill18 on YouTube that is super entertaining in addition to informative. After watching it once I haven’t had a single problem understanding any game mechanic so far. So no, it’s not in-game, but it IS officially sponsored/provided so we do actually have a wonderful how-to for this game.

The Triboelectric Scrubber will solve your dust-related issues and the colony will look shiny and require less maintenence. Unless there is a particularly nasty dust storm.

Building stuff far from Extractors and rocket landing sites is also a good practice.
