Hello,
I am long fan of EUIV, today I purchased HOI4 and had to refund after trying to play for like 90 minutes. I had watched videos of Arumba/DDRJake playing HOI4 on Youtube, but in reality HOI4 is way too boring for me.

Just curious: in terms of micromanagement/boredom -- is Stellaris the same as HOI4, is it worth trying?

Thanks

EU IV. I liked HoI III a lot and by now i find stellaris way better than HoI IV, maybe because i don't know what should be happening instead of the dummy AI ideas.

Sanny's right: there was a LOT of moaning about EU:IV in its original form.

Whatever. His question is to buy a game now, 09/06/2016. At this date, the best game you can buy is EU IV or CK II. They're finished games that are still getting aditions. We're not talking about which was worse or better at the release date.

Each game is different, I like all 3 of them, although I think in EU IV there are more player choises than in HOI4 and Stellaris is just been released. So it has long way to improve with DLCs and updates, though I still really enjoy Stellaris. In my opinion my ranking is the followin: 1st EU IV 2nd Stellaris and 3rd HOI4.

All are good and only advantage for EU IV is its age.

I have 437 hours played in Stellaris and all achievements. I'd recommend Stellaris to everyone I meet it is amazing. I can tell you exactly what its major flaw is and it comes close to your turn offs for a game. It gets boring after midgame and is hard to finish due to stale gameplay(like all clauswitz games). It is however very fun early and midgame and they are addressing and have acknowledged these facts about the game. The asimov beta is being showcased every thursday and looks to solve alot of the staleness. I highly recommend the Blorg streams also and Cknoor's MP stream which has a few devs secretly playing it. Woops let the cat out of the bag!

I have 72 hours in Hoi4 and I wish more than anything I never went past the 2 hour mark so I could return it like you did. This game is absolutely awful and there are various features that are just poor design decisions and I do not see them carrying this franchise any further than maybe a few expansions for this title. I almost want to liken this games release to hoi3's release. It has shockingly similar issues which you would think can't be possible in sequels, cause you'd want to believe people learn from mistakes but for some reason the Hearts of Iron QA teams never catch the same blatant red flags.

I have over 4k hours between CK2 and EU4. If you don't have CrusaderKings 2, I highly recommend getting all the major expansions, and if you have alot of disposable income, get everything. If you are on a budget pick everything up during the steam summer sale coming up. Both games are trully amazing and probably the best games they have ever made. Unfortunately they have deviated way too far from them with Hoi4.

Fellow Ukrainian, what got me into paradox games was Victoria II, it's a great blend of all other pdx games (except CKII), in one, refined, classic mix. Whatever you choose to buy, I recommend trying out Victoria II.

EU4 is a clear winner.
Stellaris lacks of magnetism and balance, is a young game looking for identity.
Hoi4 IMHO is lackluster and full of pointless micromanagement, un-intuitive mechanism and boring war mechanic.

Right, but it has improved in impressive ways. If they keep on in this direction, Stellaris will beat them all ;).

I know this question is a rhetorical one, but nevertheless, this is why not:
6. {No Spamming} You will not flood or post on the forums redundant, empty, or nonsensical posts or advertisements as determined by Paradox staff (i.e. no "spamming"), or necromancy (posting in old threads). Chain letters, pyramid schemes and solicitations of any kind are not allowed on this Board.

Often I've seen the necro rule enforced by something like "because of game patches old threads are likely irrelevant", in spite of the necro rule being under a no spamming preamble. However, in the case of this particular thread, which is the first link if you google "EUIV vs HOI4 vs Stellaris", should that reasoning still apply? Should someone really just start a new thread when google is already supplying a link to a source of information relevant to the discussion?

In light of the game patch example, we can easily say that the comparisons discussed a year ago between the three games is now mostly out of date, but there are still core gameplay elements that could be considered relevant.

Personally I sometimes see the necro rule as overdone, where there could be a very valid reason to revive an old discussion instead of starting a new one, especially when the old thread contains very good information. The forum already has a big box saying "this is a very old thread you probably don't want to post in it". Well if it's going to be no necro tolerance, then wouldn't it just be better to automatically lock those threads instead of having to see necro threads all the time (okay maybe not ALL the time, but they creep up often enough)?

So because the forums doesnt automatically lock those threads, and because the forum interface actually has a reminder that it probably isn't a good idea to revive an old discussion, that would seem to imply that there are cases where necro is warranted, like a thread with a relatively general search term that comes up as the top link in google for example

@smellymummy
I see your point and I partly agree. However most forums I visited indeed auto-lock threads without replies for x time.

Whatever. Yes, thread topics could still be relevant even after months (or even years) without new replies. According to my experience this results however in more confusion than anything else.
The moment @TacticalDragon confirmed the "I know this is an old thread" box everyone else was free to reply on the thread again without this prompt. Now, if someone comes here from the outside (e.g. google), reads the thread and its (old) replies and thinks she has something to contribute she'll most likely do so and won't look at the posting dates of the individual replies.
For example I could now quote reply #3 which is saying something about "Stellaris in its current state". I would assume most people doing that would not see or realise that the post is almost 2 years old (i.e. it was written short time after release of Stellaris), so the "current state" then and now are completely different. So any replies to that particular reply would be moot.

So, yes, the general topic of a thread might still be relevant. The replies in it most likely are not.

My personal preference would indeed be to lock old threads after some time. Maybe use the "I know this is old"-box for a thread without reply for about one month (as it is now, afaik) and lock them after three months without replies.

Those are some good points. The bumping of old threads is always happening when it could be so easily prevented by an auto lock

and just to add, it seems kind of interesting that this necro thread has nearly 25K views and less than 20 replies. That's got to mean something in so far as what users are expecting to get out of this topic. Maybe curiosity on people's take on the subject and a desire to participate, but then don't bother because of noticing the old dates? Well, not sure exactly what, but I thought I'd point out its high views

I would say if you like a deep-depth type of game-play, Eu4 is best. next would be CK2 ( politics simulator with an added bonus of incest )

But in all seriousness Stellaris and Hoi4 are still fairly new games and because of that they suffer from some lack of content.
If you like strategy games that don't require much strategy ( drag and click ) get Hoi4.
Sadly i'm still bad at Stellaris, if you like 4x games, then its good to go.

Plus i am slightly insulted that Victoria II wasn't place here :(
