I think it would make more sense for Paradox to buy one of the studios doing sports sims. If they were going to do one themselves, it makes more sense to do one where there really isn’t any kind of competition, so not football and not hockey. Which as far as commercially viable sports sim genres, are probably the only ones Swedes would be interested in developing.

This defeats the purpose of the request, which is for Paradox to deliver a unique experience in this genre, not to simply publish someone else's game.

I don't know if people just see sports and it brings to mind the big flashy arcade Sims and they assume the market is crowded from that, for the management strategy side it is not at all.

There is currently one football management game, and it has fundamentally stagnated due to a lack of any competitor. Yes there are cheap knock off games that follow a similar formats, but there is only one high quality game in that market. There are two for hockey, one that is a retread of a 12 year old game and the other that is a spreadsheet Sim lacking any character. Neither offer much of interest to market.

The argument is that Paradox could offer a unique product in this market, in either or another sport. There is a lot that PDX games include that could be applied to a game of this type, and they would create interest and grab attention from players.

To not agree with that is fine, that's what a forum is for! But the idea they'd somehow be lost in a haze of competition is just not reality.

The problem here is that you're saying "we need competitors with different takes on the genre" and "any other attempt at making sports management game was terrible". I guess this also encompasses games like Football Tactics (frequently renamed lately, I think its last name was "Football Tactics Management") or any other game that did something in a different way.

You seem to love Football Manager to the point that you don't like any other game in the genre. You would ultimately be disappointed by any attempt by Paradox at doing a sports management game, so it's a good thing for you they aren't doing it.

Nah, the point is that these games do try and do the same thing as fm. Just on a smaller scale, and are more cheap mobile phone games than full PC strategy experiences.

I'm sure they find their audience, or there wouldn't be so many, but there certainly don't compete in the same space as FM.

Paradox could offer a fully fleshed out experience in their own unique way, and in my opinion would find an audience also, since a big premium sports title to rival FM doesn't exist.

As stated in the first post, I have read support for such a game from Paradox staff themselves, though it may well never become anything beyond that. Just throwing my support behind the idea, as now is a great time to take advantage of a complacent franchise.

Out of interest, when you say the market is already crowded with big players, who exactly are you referring to?

I can only assume you're talking about EA and 2K etc. In the sports Sim world.. But from my experience, they are two totally different markets.

You're right, I was also thinking about EA, 2K, etc. But they are trying to include management / career options and, whilst clearly not the same to you and I, do satisfy a lot of people. Then add in the licencing issue - SI can't even factor in a fictional Japanese league because Konami have all the rights, indicating how much these cost / how well protected they are. Again, I really don't care too much about pictures of real players, club badges, etc., I'm more than happy with a world full of regens, but there are plenty of people out there who seem to think it makes or breaks the game.

Also, funnily enough it was playing CK2 that got me thinking about this as well, picking my council and commanders, comparing stats and traits, trying different combinations... It really brought to mind the mechanics of FM.

The Chairman with the Control Freak trait who makes your life hell. The youngster who you released from your academy picks up the Single Minded trait, adding 5 to his determination stat and has his heart set on proving you wrong. His mate, released at the same time, gets Disheartened... would be awesome :)

For me, what would send me into hysteria is Paradox covering a period of football history, in the same way they cover certain periods in their grand strategies. Imagine: playing the first few seasons of pro football in England, with all the events and aesthetics that could include. Think of the portraits! The old school shirts. The humour in the language used.

You never know, maybe Paradox presents The Busby Babes, or The Damned United! At PDXCON
