EU4 - Development Diary - 11th of September 2018

Good morning and welcome to the first Post-Dharma dev diary. Dharma was released last week and by most measures was an extremely successful release for us. That said, we have a tradition of post release support for our games and expansions, that's what I'm here to talk about today.

Firstly, While Dharma had very few critical bugs on release, there are still issues out there that merit a hotfix. For us, a hotfix is a swift patch on a released product, aimed to fix two particular types of issues: Ones which disrupt the game/its features in a big way, typically crashes, freezes or features breaking in peculiar ways, or small yet high-impact issues which are quick to fix and test on our end.

We are building a hotfix as we speak, and a preliminary list of fixes we are going to be patching are as follows:

  • Fix crash when supporting heir with negative chance
  • Fixed a peace treaty crash for players continuing their 1.25 saves
  • Fixed Trade Company Investments being lost on tag switch
  • Fixed Trade company Crash
  • Fixed Crash when stopping Area Rebel suppression
  • Revolutionary governments now lose their number of reforms as if they switched via reform
  • Mewar achievement script issue fixed (should be visible if you've formed another nation)
  • Fixes theocracies and hordes not getting aristocratic ideas
  • Fixed rulers swapping religions back and fourth in certain cases
  • Fixed Achievements not being available for released nations
  • Stopped tight-fisted AI chartering provinces for 0 ducats
  • Adopt Islamic government no longe ravailable to Indian Sultanates
More fixes may be added to this list as we continue to monitor bug reports that are coming in. Our plan is to release this hotfix as a beta at some point this week, and fold that beta into the main game after a few days, assuming no other serious issues pop up.

There are certainly other issues which I'm certain people are keen to see addressed. For those, we are beginning work on the main post-release Update, 1.27. Let's talk about that now.

Post release updates come after a big expansion, are free and targeted at a region, much like the 1.24 Japan update. We add some flavour to the target region. It also allows us to round up on a lot of the bugs which come in, both for the recently released expansion and some of the older backlog of issues. They sometimes go hand in hand with other things, and that will be the case, as with 1.27, EU4 will also be joining the ranks of our other games in becoming fully GDPR compliant. More details on this will be released closer to the time, but the result for most users will just wind up being a policy to read before playing the game.

Religious conversion in territories has been a hot topic since its changes were announced for and subsequently released in 1.26. The response on it on all platforms (and I've read almost all of them) has lead to some interesting conversations about that whats and whys of religious conversion and some cool ideas on what do do about it. I'm not quite naive enough to overlook how they were overall negatively received, and we want to address these grievances. In the short term, we're going to look at bringing Religious and Humanist more in line with each other as viable choices for your nation for 1.27. We have longer term ideas for conversions, but we'll talk more about that down the line after 1.27.

So yes, Hotfix this week, 1.27 coming soon. Religious conversions responses not falling on deaf ears. Now how about the target for 1.27? Well, over the past year we've put a lot of work into the "Rest of the World" With focus on Japan, The Far East, The Near East and now India.

I'd say it's high time we put the Europa

Finally, although I hope you won't just release a minor patch and then go back behind the Aegean sea. :)

Ireland is one of those parts of the map where it can be made as granular as we are willing to, due to the makeup of the isle. If more provinces are truly what you want, then...

Do your worst, I dare you :)

Or at the very least, add a unique Irish government that allows a gallowglass estate :)

I think I also see a new province next to Poznan (Gniezno?) and even one next to Plock (Dobrzyn or Inowroclaw?). Both would be really nice additions.

I really hope that if Notec stays the same, it will be renamed to Bydgoscz (after its provincial capital). Notec is a river and was only a provincial unit during Prussian rule (Netze district).

Really can't wait till next week, luckily my week is busy enough, but damnnnn.

I am sympathetic to the concerns of the minority of WC and hyper-blobbing players even if it isn't a playstyle that I enjoy (did one WC, didn't find it fun, not going to do it again). I fully support the idea of keeping as many different playstyles as possible viable within the game. That said, I hope that whatever changes are made to address the issues don't completely revert the changes to how territories work. Personally, I really like the new territory changes; it's nice to have territories actually feel substantially different from states, as opposed to being basically the same but with the autonomy floor, and it would be a shame to lose that. Hopefully a solution can be found that also keeps the unique flavour.

I'd think a good replacement would be autonomy multiplicatively affect conversion rate, and then the Religious finisher being "Autonomy does not affect Conversion" or "+5% Missionary Strength in Territories". Or hell, "Can Build Reformation Centers".

Also come on guys we've had Development since 1.12, why use number of States as a threshold for Corruption? Go with Development instead, with +0.001 Corruption per Territory Development above State Development.

It can't be... glorious Polska!!

Edit: I guess this is as good a time as any to show my idea for a province reform in Poland based on historical borders with a few gameplay compromises here and there lol

Yeah, Poland. Because the Balkans, Italy, Spain, North Africa are completely developed and unlike Poland, don't need an update.
Chill, Balkans are probably going to get an update along with Poland, Spain's probably going to its own colonization dlc and Italy together with HRE will probably get their own expansion as well.

We have longer term ideas for conversions, but we'll talk more about that down the line after 1.27.

Jake, are you guys actually making my dreams come true?

Obligatory quote from other thread:

As far as religion goes I would love if a province had a primary religion and multiple secondary religions. This would first and foremost be more realistic but it would also lend more representation to some of the smaller underrepresented religions like judaism. This would imo be such a big change that it would have to be part of a free patch but they did it with colonial nations too and the change could easily serve as a springboard for an entire religion DLC which I would love. It could bring new mechanics for small overlooked religions, add in new ones among the secondary religions, add in further interactions inbetween the faiths (for instance similar to what CoC did to Islam, countries that ally or war with other religions change global opinion inbetween these religions), perhaps even give you the ability to revive old and forgotten faiths, etc. I think this would greatly help to diversify the game experience and it could even create ways to go beyond current religious restrictions. For instance with proper reforms or good inter-religious relations royal marriages inbetween different religions could become possible (though this should be really hard to attain).

As I imagine the province system there would be constant slow fluctuation determined by different factors like state religion, religion of ruler, powerfull heresies in the area or even an exodus from other places in the world (like when Constantinople is taken). Thus the normal situation would be a slow conversion towards your primary religion that could be significantly increased by missionaries. Or maybe in some cases if your religion is not present in the province at all you would need a missionary to establish the first communities for anything to get going at all. I also think that your state opinion of different religions should get some model. For instance maybe you are more accepting of Orthodox Christians than of Coptics and would then get harsher penalities from Coptics but slower conversion speed for Orthodox and possibly even no conversion if religions are on equal footing in your realm (why should people convert if fully accepted?). Tolerance could be influenced by a number of things. For instance it you send missionaries your local heretics might dislike that and you may become less tollerant.

I think the great part of such a religion DLC would be that it affects absolutely everyone and improves a core mechanic of the game. The last couple of DLCs were all region specific with some extra stuff that affected everyone this would reverse the trend.

Pls Paradox!

@DDRJake

How about letting Monastic Orders lead their armies again? Seems like a senseless nerf; and also unhistorical considering Monastic Orders were literally military states and their rules were their Generals.

So, a summary from what I could gather from the picture:
- Ceciny for Poland, confirmed.
- Rawa for Mazovia, confirmed.
- Unknown Polish province between Sieradz and Silesia (might be Wielun?).
- Unknown Polish province next to Rawa (might be Kuyavia with Brzesc-Kujawski as capital?).
- Unknown Polish province above the previous one (might be Inowroclaw?).
- Unknown Polish province next to Poznan (might be Gniezno?).

@DDRJake how close am I? :p

Anyway, the preview looks promising! Can't wait to see the full picture!

I know everyone love Poland, but I have to talk about England.

What happened to "English Civil War"? It doesn't remove English monarchy anymore!

And also, English monarchy still have -30 maximum absolutism.

Is this like a bug, or huge nerf for poor England?
