Steam (and probably every single store also) has a very harsh rules. They check your releases and if you don't send them the build in advance, they could refuse it and release would be delayed at least by 3 days. It is far better to release a buggy game than not release at all.
Steam have harsh rules? I think not.

The shear amount of broken drivel that gets on their store front means they can't be doing anything but the most cursory and limited tests, ie does it start. Even then I'm sure there have been games put up on steam that don't have even that functionality.

Harsh rules doesn't mean that people enforcing them right. I said that because I watched the release of one game quite recently and author wrote everything in his blog. He dedicated two or three posts to hist dealing with steam and it was pure madness. They've rejected his build because they've thought "multiplayer was missing" despite the fact a lot of players actually played it in beta for many months. So the information could be biased a bit, it's just what I know.

Huh, I've no doubt that valve are capable of being a royal pain in the bum to devs sometimes they are obviously just very inconsistent with applying it.

Even though people dislike epic and their approach to gaining market share at least they are offering better deals to devs (and no I don't condone exclusives). Steam will have to up its game for devs of it wants to avoid being left behind.

Game development works kinda like this.

XXX weeks before release you lock all features, and don't revise them, to make sure localisation, AI, UI etc works fine.
XX weeks before release you lock everything that is not an crash or a feature not working at all.
X weeks before release your version is frozen, nothing changes, as that version has to be tested for different platforms etc to make sure its all working fine.

Depending on whether you are working on an expansion, patch or new game release, each X may be anything from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks each.

A normal expansion for a game like EU4 has the XXX at about 7 weeks before release, and the XX about 2 weeks later, and X is at latest 2 weeks before release.

Thanks for the explanation. But could you answer the original question? Did you mean this "first update" will be released alongside with the game on release day or later?

If I remember correctly Hearts of Iron IV and EU IV were both released on Steam in v1.1 and not v1.0. So they can validate their game now for version 1.0, and if they have the time they can try to create version 1.1, validate that and also uload it to steam, but they always have a functioning backup, if they need some more days for version 1.1

For now Version 1.0 is for the YouTuber and later press. I am not sure if they will sell physical copies in Germany again, and if they do, if it will release on the same day as digital, and which version is on the disc (which needs to be activated on steam and then patched either way)

Oh, they absolutely can. What I'm asking is whether they plan to.

I don't understand why the persistence to get an answer from them. It's pretty obvious that they plan to release a day one patch, as they have done with their previous releases. And as has been seen many times, Paradox don't like to handcuff themselves to patch release dates/times. The intention is there; everything permitting, we will get a day one patch.

Later on.

Later on.

That's why a lot of people prefer to not pre order until they know about exactly enough content in the base game. its not healthy for many people holding their breath wondering anxiously if the content they wish to see in any title will one day be added, it has to be good enough from the Go.

I actually pre ordered this game but waited many years before buying Total War: Rome 2 for a bargain, because I knew that game was at first trash.. in the sense of where the company decided to focus it's budget and I avoid marketing hype (Until I know) . It turned out unfortunately I was correct as it had major issues on launch.

Now don't get me wrong it does certain elements of content really well, however It just doesn't have the same quality that paradox games bring. Also Paradox seems to be more connected and listening to our community.

Edit: Well this comment Aged Well :D

Would you rather Johan didnt inform us about the need for an early patch and let the "broken" mechanic surprise you?

Johan should be thanked for communicating with us about the status of the game, even if he can't give us specific dates.

Also, I think if you are having anxiety issues about this game then you are taking it too seriously and shoudn't pre-order. Oh wait... you already did. Well lessons learned huh?

Edit: Get a full refund from steam if you are so dissatisfied.

Edit:
''Would you rather Johan didn't inform us about the need for an early patch and let the "broken" mechanic surprise you?'' ''Edit: Get a full refund from steam if you are so dissatisfied.'' I would rather a not broken service / product to begin with.

Wow. Game isn't out and some people are already disappointed and angry because they saw things in the stream.

Just... buy the game if you enjoy the era, and know there will be updates frequently (or, well, frequently compared to other games).

The purpose of this thread is a clarification of what was said by Johan. He did exactly what I asked for - he answered the question. I personally have no complains about should they release the patch 1st day or later, just wanted to know their plans. And thanks Johan for the answer.
That being said, I don't want this thread to become another one about should one preorder or not, I ask mods to lock it. We got the answer.

No that's bad advice, what I'm saying is buy the game if its a Good product with what you want to play, know the content within the sandwich before you buy and eat it.

Eat the sandwich before you buy it?

Because we've already seen what's in it. In development diaries, in streams, on the forums. No company I know of is as transparent about their development process and what will be in their games as Paradox.

Some 15-17 years ago when I was a wee young lad, I would go to the store and buy a computer game because the cover looked fricking cool. I know waaaay more about what I'm getting with Imperator and Paradox than I did back then.

Now, if you are desperately upset and can't play the game because there won't be a patch on day 1, then... don't buy the game. But claiming you're going in blind when purchasing the product is just a weird rhetorical trick because you're upset about something. Sort of like all the strawman memes you had to bring a few posts ago.

That's called piracy and you cant Consume a product that isn't even released yet.

We can only eat it once it has Arrived on 25 April 2019,

That was actually my bloody point to first know and we do know what kind of Product it is at release because Paradox has shown us enough which is great.
However what you don't know is what is being added nor patched unless they tell you.

I never claimed to go in blind, the blind person turned out to be you isn't it buying stuff from the cover and its not my fault you still have the brains of a 15 yr old.

Edit: The game got postponed indefinitely, flopped and received a massive backlash, so as I said its not my fault you still have the brains of a 15 yr old.
