So Imperator: Rome is soon here, and I'm planning to do an AAR on it ASAP. :)

I'm not sure what country to do though. I'd love to do Rome, but probably everyone and their mother will do that pretty quickly.

I'd like to do a non-tribal country, preferably a republic. The five years term limit is perfect for updates. ;)

Aside from Rome and Carthage, does anyone have suggestions for a good country?

Some suggestions I've been given from people on Discord etc already:

  • Rhodes. Phrygia would be an issue I guess, but easy expansion to Crete and the Peleponnes and if Phrygia breaks, into Anatolia.
  • Massilia. Plenty of opportunities I guess, both into Gaul, Iberia and Northern Italy.
  • Etruria, but they are tribal and I don't really fancy the additional work to become civilized? Breaking Rome fast will be important.
  • Tarentum. Italian minor, so I will have to beat Rome fast. The ones to invite Phyrrus to beat Rome around this time.
  • Olbia. Lies on the Black Sea, so probably will be having issues with barbs in the north and powerful neighbours to the south.

Tarentum. Not just beating Rome but replacing it in your timeline would make for interesting first alternate history AAR.
Indeed it would! :)

Well you know my thoughts on this already. The nice thing about Rhodes/Olbia would be it is out of the immediate Roman orbit.

If Rome inspires you, then do Rome. Ancient Rome is a big enough world of its own that you can spin it as you like. A German Emperor, a divided Empire with competing legion-backed Imperial wannabes, a return to the Republic, everything is feasible and either did happen OTL, or could have happened! :D

Problem is I am inspired east and west. :D Right now I am thinking either Rhodes or Carthage. Been watching Alex the Rambler's Carthage defeating Rome video. :p

Rhodes would be a really interesting one to see, though you could try and do a Athens playthrough and see if you can do Pericles proud!

I personally have been thinking of doing a Epirus AAR of some sort, though it depends if I am any good at the game :D

I'm itching to try my hands an IR AAR too! Even though I've pre-purchased I'm afraid I haven't kept up with the development much, so I guess I'm in for trial and error...

My own list of nations to consider goes like this:

Olbia
Bactria
Athens (just because)
A British tribe (probably the Dumnonii because I love Cornwall)
Possibly one of those small states on the edge of Arabia

I am sure I will play the "big boys" (ie Carthage, Rome, the various Diadochi etc) at some point, but these days I tend to like starting small and out of the way.

Dibs on Etruria!

I'm leaning towards Rhodes right now. Would be a waste not to make an AAR called "All Rhodes Leads to Rome", right? :D

RossN, I would absolutely LOVE to see an AAR by you! :) And trial and error is very fun to read about, amirite? :D

Is Bactria really that small, though? ;) Perhaps compared to the Maurya and (soon imploding) Selucids? :p

Dibs on Etruria!
Noted! ;)

Thanks. :) And very true!

I'm tempted by Macedonia (which I tried a long time ago in a never finished EU:Rome AAR) or the Antigonid Empire (which I once played on a forum rpg.) Either seems like they have a lot of options.

Smaller powers I'll have to take a look at but I'd probably lean Greek.

Oh, and Massilia sounds nice. Or some Greek cities in Hispania. Emporion or Hemeroskopeion. Olbia seems interesting as well. At the edge of the Greek colonization effort.

Well, the game is called "Imperator: Rome", so the only acceptable choice is Rome and the destruction of Carthage in your AAR. Rome or riot !

But no seriously, I'll be looking forward to whatever nation you'll play, hopefully I'll find out on time to stay on par :).

Greek lovers I see. :p

I will surely post a link here, no worries. :)

A short AAR has me thinking ... howabout a hAARku;

"Primary Title,
passes to inbred brother,
the worst, gavelkind'
