Whenever I am in game, every five seconds it freezes and then displays "Map saved!" on the screen. It appears to be spam-taking those special "map screenshots" and I have no idea what is causing it. I've even disabled the relevant F10, F11, and F12 keys on my keyboard and it is still doing it. It is also doing it in EU IV. This behavior started all of a sudden and I have no idea what caused it. It essentially makes the game unplayable as it spends most of the time frozen while recording the screenshot.

That's specifically the f10 key. As it's doing it in two games it pretty much has to be your keyboard I think. Can you swap it for another one as a test?

Is it possible to swap keybinds in paradox games? I have disabled the f10 key with a third party program in an attempt to make the problem go away, and it is still happening in both games.

I did a fresh reinstall of the game following the instructions given on the forum and now it won't start. It begins the loading screen then gives me the spinny-circle-of-death and pops up with a message that "CK 2 is not responding" and then crashes. EU IV now does the same thing after a fresh install. This is so weird. Everything else on my computer still works fine.

Nothing is provided in the game to do that, I'm sorry. There may be mods that allow that, I'm not sure.

No real idea how or why this has happened to the same two games affected above, at the same time. I assume HOI4 and Stellaris still work okay?

May as well start with a clean reinstall:
- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add ck2game.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist of your antivirus app
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK2 or Documents CK2 locations, before installing again.

I actually don't have HOI4 or Stellaris installed, but I'll install them and see what happens. I've done a fresh reinstall following your instructions exactly, but the problem of crashing on loading screen persists.

Which antivirus app do you use? Some need special extra steps.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

I have reinstalled Windows. That fixed the bug with crash on startup, but the "Map Saved!" bug is still there. Do you have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot it, how that I can actually launch the game again?

I really do love this game and would like very much to be able to play it. I wish I knew what was causing this problem as I know it's very strange, but I've tried everything I know to fix it. If a fresh Windows reinstall (wiped all my drives completely) didn't fix it, what on earth is the problem?

Just one more update (sorry for all the separate posts): I reinstalled EU IV and it still has the problem. Now, however, it does the "Map Saved!" bug on the main menu and then crashes.

Did you swap to a different keyboard as a test?

Did HOI4 and Stellaris have this problem too?

Hearts of Iron had no problems. Stellaris kept spam opening and closing the Fleet Manager screen, which appears to be bound to f10. I don't have a second keyboard, but I will try to get one and test it.

I tested another game--World of Warcraft--which has an f10 binding (to open and close a bag in the game) and it didn't have any problems. I know that is outside of you guys' scope, but I'm sharing to make it clear the problem appears to be localized to Paradox games.

Additionally, I tried running it on my second (usually for work stuff) laptop, and it doesn't have the problem there. So it appears to be associated with my laptop rather than with, say, Steam.

Is there really no way to disable the "Map Saved!" function?

Not that I'm aware of, sorry. But you might try the User Mods forum, they'd know far better than I would.

Disclaimer : I'm just another forum member.

If you have no other keyboard to check if it's simply a hardware failure with that, i'd simply take a small screwdriver and loosen the F10 key to pick it up and see if there was an issue.
So with the key off, start a game and see if the issue's still around. Maybe the key is just jammed, stuck, dirty, whatever.
Keyboards on laptops though can be problematic and of course i don'tknow how your keyboard is made.

Thank you for your advice. I am afraid it is indeed a laptop keyboard and my spare keyboard actually won't connect to the laptop, so I'm going to have to try to find another to test it.

An alternate keyboard removed the problem. It's strange that only Paradox games seem to be registering the f10 key "problem" (of the ones I own), but if the option for save the map doesn't exist, I don't think there's much you guys can do for me. I'll just have to look into getting the laptop repaired. Just leaving this here in case anyone has a similar problem so they'll know how to resolve it. Thank you sincerely for the help.

...but if the option for save the map doesn't exist, I don't think there's much you guys can do for me...

That seems indeed to be the case.
I found no shotcut for screenshots or F10 mentioned in the interface folder.

So (most likely) not modifiable/editable.
Just for info and feedback.
