Started as the Bosonid king of Italy in the new start date, pretty satisfied with how far I've gotten in so little time, so I thought I'd share :)

ck2_42.png

So, starting of as ol' Hugh here, my first act was legitimizing all my bastard children as you can see. Unfortunately, stress is a cruel mistress, and he died about 4 years into the campaign.

ck2_43.png

But, luckily, my act of legitimizing paid of, as my know 3rd born son Godofred here was elected King. I don't think I enjoyed playing a character as much as I did dear Godofred here. He immediately went to work gobbling up Sardinia and Corsica, and then pushed into mainland Sicily to take it from the Byzantines, who we're fighting for control of Sicily with the Bulgarians of all people! Twenty years into his reign as king, I got the land necessary to form Italia. By the time he turned 53, all of Italia was under the Bosonid banner, and he sat pretty for a good 7-8 years, forging a bloodline along the way. Sadly, he passed at the ripe old age of 62. Then came the question: who would succeed him as Emperor?

ck2_45.png

It was originally an awfully difficult choice between two very different, but equally militaristic men. Either his first born son Hugh, who had the makings of a tyrant, or his distant cousin Leone. I say "originally", cuz coming outta left field was...

ck2_46.png

MUTHAF***ING CARLOOOOO!! As you can see, this third born son is the result of my very first experience with the Child of Destiny event chain. And HOLY FATHER above did it pay off in the end! I don't think I've ever played a character with THAT much martial. Shortly after being crowned, he wasted no time kicking the Umayyad's in the teats and conquering their holdings in Africa, as you can see in the first two screenshots above. So here I am, sitting pretty with a demigod of a man, with two bloodlines, and a statue for daddio in the works.

And now...I'm just waiting for a chance to play again! Where the hell should I go conquer next!? Getting the rest of Africa away from those pesky Egyptians is the obvious first step, but from there, where do I go!? So many possibilities with this guy! Either way hope this wasn't too long of a post for this thread, just thought I'd gush over the start to what might be the most satisfying campaign I've played to date!

How did you manage to deal with the Pope? Did you vassalize him?

Sorta? I pressed an Antipopes claim on the Papacy after forming the empire. The then Pope proper was being a douche and was excommunicating myself and a number of my vassals, and I didn't like that, so one thing led to another and so on. I let the new Pope keep Rome, at least until I reach a large enough milestone to warrant moving my capital to Rome. Till then, I'm content with my capital being in Firenze. :)

How did you deal with the coronation shenanigans? Because I know the Pope will usually ask for Rome back or be set independent. Do you just ask a vassal bishop to crown you instead?

I've yet to deal with coronation shenanigans. Carlo was such a badass that all the Pope asked for in return for the coronation was Papal Investiture. I'm sure as the campaign continues and more Emperor's come into the throne, I'll see some craziness come from the Papacy in regards to coronations.

From my experience, I just ask any other bishop to crown me since a vassal Pope always asked for Rome or be set free. Yeah you'll have a lower opinion if you choose some random bishop, but since he's your vassal he can't excommunicate you. I kinda wished the Pope would sit still and just chill

I mean that's pretty historically accurate, all the Pope's tried to squirm their way to more power or independence after the end of Exartate of Ravenna. It'd be weird if the papacy was totally chill with being led around by a temporal ruler that probably doesn't even rule half of the Catholic world, let alone half of Christendom. However, if you ruled over the 5 patriarchs, you could conceivably keep the Pope on a leash since he'd be worried with the other 4 being elevated higher in power than him if he overstepped his bounds.

Would be cool that if you have Free Investiture and a vassal pope, you could personally select the next Pope, it's what happened before the Cardinal system was instituted.

Yeah the Pope need's to mind his own business from time to time.

That would be pretty cool. The other four patriarchs are Antioch, Alexandria, Constantinople, and Jerusalem right? I'm asking because I may decided to reform the Roman Empire at some point and they're a requirement aren't they?

I wish if Italia was formed, you could have an option to vassalize the Papacy and be allowed to have an agreement where the Pope will still be the religious head but lets you keep Rome and won't always ask for independence for coronation. A man can dream

If you want to form the Roman Empire you have to rule Byzantium and fully control the duchies of:
  • Latium
  • Venice
  • Ferrara
  • Sicily
  • Genoa
  • Capua
  • Apulia
  • Thrace
  • Antioch
  • Jerusalem
  • Alexandria
  • Athens
  • Tunis
  • Croatia
Copied from the Wiki, but I verified it in the game file.

(You also have to be Christian or Hellenic.)

If you're talking about fully restoring the whole old Roman Empire (for the S.P.Q.R. achievement) the Wiki has a map of all the required territory at:

https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/SPQR_walkthrough

There may be slight changes with the recent map updates, though.

(I have no idea if the walkthrough itself is any good.)

Hope this helps! :)

Ah I see! I haven't been playing on Ironman, but I will definitely keep this in my regardless!

Here the finish of an co-op multiplayer. I call it: "Suck it, Osman" or "The even better Sultan of Rum" Old Gods start with the Hashimids of Hedjaz (me) and the Tulunids of Egypt. Surprisingly worked on first try, we expected the Abbasids would make more problems, but sometimes you get lucky. Same for the Byzantines actually. The first war against them was toe to toe with me winning the Kingdom Anatolia in the process. After that... they simply were never again able to mount any kind of resistance, with my vassals tearing them apart. The Fall of Constantinople was less of an event and more of me noticing it after the fact (still, took it for me personal and build some new, proper walls around it). And after that I thought, well, Viena isn't that far...

Also interesting is the religious map. Christianity is nearly dead and Sunni the main religion of a large part of the world (even the Chinese emperor is Sunni...). A large part of that is due to the AI Umayyads. We all see them take over Iberia most of the time. We all see them making it into France pretty regularly. This Umayyads took over Spain. And France. And Germany. And Poland. And eastern Europe. They stood at the gates of Moscow for crying out loud!
And then they imploded in a decadence revolt. There successors united Iberia, France and Great Britain again, but then fell in turn to decadence. Sad, but a sign to behold beforehand.

What's most impressive to me is the Jains winning so much in India, usually Hinduism takes over much of the eastern part of the map if left to its own devices.

As far as I recall, Jainism was basically dead for a long time and most of India Hindu. But then those two major indian realms converted shortly after each other and stayed Jain for the rest of the game. I haven't really played in India or with the eastern religions, so I don't know how that might have happened beyond the usual tutoring heirs things.

Rulers of any of the Indian religions can easily convert to the other two at any moment, provided they have a province of that religion in their realm.

My Aladdin Achievement run:
473FB48F7D75182192474EB8B03A6DF3216729A8

Started as the Duke of Jiuquan in the Old Gods start date, working my way (slowly) west. Religion went from Taoist to Buddhist to Sunni. Primary title went Jiuquan, Xiyu (Han Khotan), Turan, Arabian Empire (which came with a useful Caliphate).
For the last one, I got lucky that I had married an Abassid princess a generation or two back. White peace for the first claim war, so it became inheritable. The next guy won easily when there was a revolt in the Abassid empire.
I destroyed Turan and released my eastern vassals along the way, which both kept my vassal limit and threat low.

Now I'm a bit burned out on the Persian area. I'm probably going to play the Iron Century in "good old" Europe.

Can you adopt chinese imperialism while being the Sunni Caliph?

Can you adopt chinese imperialism while being the Sunni Caliph?

Yes, I've done it. Well, I was the Yazidi Sheikh, but the mechanics are pretty much the same. :)

This was two updates ago, but I took a look at the decision in the files, and I didn't see that they had added any blocks for this.
