We have extremely limited options for housing and no late-game housing option.
Living complexes\Smart homes - are pretty much the same, with the exception of comfort bonus. But living complexes already provide enough. Great early options.
Apartments - poor option due to low comfort but with more housing.
Arcology - mediocre option because it hogs spire place, provides somewhat more living space with good comfort.
That is all.
We have no high-capacity high comfort late game housing options. When faced with late game overpopulation, your option is to build more domes with houses only to fill all those hundreds of homeless. No "Tall" gameplay possible, only "wide" one.

Smart Homes / Complexes provide Sanity when ppl are resting. These are the late game houses but of course not high capacity.

Apartments can be turned into late game houses but these need a lot of work to offset that base 35 comfort.

Or alternatively, curb population growth a bit, which would aid with this and other problems.
Banning a fraction of the domes from reproducing does the trick. I was able to turn the exponential population growth into linear growth.

Lowering population growth is problematic for The Last Ark, since I think you're already limited to a minimal viable population count.

At some point it is easier to just ignore all homeless and jobless masses, especially when they reach 500+. You build workshops, switch all buildings to 3 shifts, disable all upgrades, that reduce work slots etc.
You actually make a complete cycle - at first, you get all that valuable upgrades that remove work slots, while preserving efficiency, then, as population grows, you disable them just to shove all free people to ANY job. All those upgrades turn useless, with limited viability as mid-game temporary solution. Late-game thye are actually harmful as they hog work slots.
I had whole domes with nothing but apartments and nuclear generators because generators require so many people to operate.
It is not fun or interesting or challenging anymore because all you do is making living space and useless jobs for your colonists.
It is interesting and challenging to turn Mars into a sustainable futuristic colony, but now in every game Mars turns into a Bangladesh

While I would like a sort of large-sized smart home for the late game, Apartments are a perfectly viable option for the later stage. Thanks to all the other tech benefits & generally improved service quality, the lower comfort won't really matter.

The simple solution to the overpopulation problem is to enable birth control on most of your Domes ones you have reached capacity. Even if there were significantly larger building options, with the current system growth will always outpace habitable space eventually.

THAT's the way. People just always get in to the trap to keep going after 1,000 colonists. WHAT FOR I SAY? When you get all the achievements and milestones. Why do you even go for 1000+ colonists ? Some personal imaginary goal ? We can go for 10,000 colonists once or in 2 games then what ? There are other things that you can do than just go for max population.

This depends on your preferred style of play. My opinion is that endgame lacks alot in terms of development. The expansion to terraforming is a-okay, but its a very long wait, thus making it boring for some. What if you could unlock new buildings such as the mentioned housing above, and add other amazing buildings too? If you look in the steam workshop, there are plenty of amazing ideas for buildings and how you can implement them. Some have upgrade options, where you start with standard amount of housing, then spending resources on upgrading the house to contain more people and up the maintenance cost on them too. Or they are very expensive to build, but keep a low maintenance cost. I would like new entertainment buildings that serve more needs at the same time, perhaps even larger domes with different layouts and design too. New spires would be nice. More options once terraforming is complete. One thing i would like to see, is more jobs for colonists, they are not needed often times in endgame, which is sad, because you have a ton of them by then.

Basically you want another expansion. :)
As we all.

I agree we need more buildings. For example there is only 1 non Sponsor specific building that provides dining aka the Diner no other choice.

But for now all the 100s of mods can provide whatever we need until another official expansion.

As for preferred play style. Yes, but going for 1000+ colonists almost every time is a boring play style IMO.

Why not do other stuff? Like, maybe make ALL the map green? Or flat and then green (no need for 100% terraforming)? Or flat and all paved with landing pads? Or try to terraform Mars with no colonists? OR do the last one or all, but at high difficulty? There are PLENTY of crazy ideas we can try every play through. Instead of concentrating on the colonists number...
I go the other way with small amount of colonists, but max their stats to make their work performance as high as possible. I wanna see how much a factory can make per Sol with such colonists. Until now I managed to get a small Machine Parts factory to make 5,5 per Sol with only Amateur colonists. Basically get the most possible with as little as possible.

Late game you have no option but to build domes with nothing but apartment and workshops just to keep thousands unemployed and homeless colonists busy. Even birth controls could not cope with the colonist influx. Death domes for seniors becoming full way too fast also.
