Hello, I'm looking to get to know more about Stalin's rise to power, "The Great Purge" and other prominent people involved in the whole affair at the time (like maybe Bukharin for example), however I have no clue whatsoever on were to start.

I'm looking for good reads that might shed some light on those events, ideally in a neutral informative manner. If you know something written by a native it might be best, but I can't read Russian so it has to have an English version.

If you know anything please leave a suggestion, really would appreciate it.

If you read french, I cannot recommend enough the works of Nicolas Werth. If not, some of these have been translated in english. However, his english wiki page doesn't mention a translation of his book on the Moscow trials.

If you like, you can just watch some excellent youtube documentaries about Stalin's rise to power. The Great Purge is also considered in the below link

Already earlier, in the early 1930's Stalin was consolidating his power with a process called collectivization. The people who didn't want to collaborate with the new order were rounded-up and forced to work for the grandiose public works, like the "Stalin Canal". A water route connecting the Baltic Sea and the Arctic Ocean was finished during Stalin's first five-year-period.
