Hello,

Thought I would ask here in the hopes that somebody either knows of a good source for this, or could point me to some other site and/or forum which may be better suited to the question. I realize there aren't really any "period" maps but was hoping somebody had reconstructed a map of some sort for this period. I'm specifically interested in the last war with the Sassanians 602-628 and the roads/routes that would have been used by both sides, especially the routes through Armenia by Heraclius. Thanks in advance!!

The Tabula Peutingeriana is the only known road map that survived from the Roman Empire, though it's a couple of centuries older at least (some details suggest a 1st century date, others 4th century). A quick google search for "roman road network" gives a lot of maps, I didn't check what they were based on.

This is excellent, thank you so much! The Tabula Peutingeriana is very impressive and I was able to find several very good sites that are doing digital map-reconstructions based on this (and probably other) sources. Very much appreciated!

Pretty cool. There's even a route planner based on that map:
Reasonably pointless but fun project :D
Interestingly this one suggests a road through Armenia for getting from Valkenburg (mouth of the Rhine) to Seleucia (i.e. Baghdad).

Yeah, I tried Matilo (the closest to my house) to Barcelona and it led me through the French Massif Central instead of taking the easier and straighter road through the Rhone valley.

The tabula map comes with mileage informations between all way points, so I guess the pathfinder algorithm will seek to minimize the mileage between your start and finish points. Which, I think, is reasonable if you're going to walk the whole distance rather than take a cart or carriage. By foot you'd certainly be better off going through a mountain range (along established routes) than around it.

If it showed the actual routes I'd love to hike some portion of it; but unfortunately it's just "point to point" connection. I wonder whether there's a sorta ... "modern leftover pieces of Roman road networks" map somewhere?
