There's not even a Wikipedia link or a concise description here. There's nothing here but that title.

there are some crazy smart dudes in the history forum who might know a heck of a lot more, I've seen whole detailed insightful essays in response to seemingly inane questions

Yes, no EU4 context given so over to History we go.

Welcome to the history forum. Beep beep I am the welcome bot.

You are free to pick any of the unoccupied tombs. Please do not disturb the skeletons. The dust cleaners come by once every decade, please don't leave things on the floor before they come. Have a great time!

Sir Walter Raleigh established the first and a short-lived English colony, Roanoke in 1585. By that time, the Spanish conquistadors had already wiped out the Aztec- and Inca cultures, further founded the Manilla Galleons, the Silver Train and the Treasure Fleet.

And yet... colonization beat out exploitation in the end. It didn't take long and it brought a lot more wealth.

England started later than Spain, true. And by-passed her to build two of the greatest empires in the world (one before and one after the Americans opted out), built the largest economy in world history on manufacturing and trade, gave her citizens a good education and, eventually, handed freedom to her colonies. Spain on the other hand overdosed on gold and silver, wasted her money and wrecked her economy, lost her colonies to rebellions and foreign conquest, and remained in the doldrums until Franco died. (That's all just my opinion - and no insult intended to the good people of Spain, who suffered some truly bad governance.)

So who cares if Spain had a Palace of Governors before the Pilgrims hit the Rock? Winners are judged on whether they hit the tape first - not when they start running.

Fixed that for you

BTW what makes you count the pre 1776 British colonial empire as (one of) the greatest in the world?? How was that anything special. The north American colonies were hardly anything other than a sink for criminals and anti social elements, and Siberian style fur hunting grounds. How does the pitiful little bit of taxation the British collected from north America compare with the mountains of wealth that the Spanish extracted and collected from their new world empire.

As a native American I agree with this sentiment.

No, you didn't fix that for me - you altered it to suit yourself.

Pretty much every source I've ever read or seen counts the British Empire as one of the greats. I understand that every empire - likely every government - is built on suffering and enforcement, but we weren't talking about the 'nicest' or the 'least oppressive'. Compared to what the Spanish did, British settlement was pretty mild.

Absurd, insupportable and unworthy of discussion.

How does the pitiful little bit of taxation the British collected from north America compare with the mountains of wealth that the Spanish extracted and collected from their new world empire.

As you would know if you had looked into the subject, Britain made most of its wealth off trade not taxation. What that built was the greatest economy in the world.

@holyvigil - Hey, I'm dealing with real history here, not what we could wish and hope had happened, I agree that most of what happened in North America was to the serious disadvantage of the indigenous people. But if a technologically superior group of humans wanted to do the same thing to North America today, they likely could and would. Persons may be good or evil, but people as a group are prone to do bad things and cloak them in pious rhetoric.

I'd like to think we are better people now - even if that means just being more honest about what we do. I'm not sure that's true, but I'd like to think so.

However, lacking a time machine there is nothing I can do about it except understand it and try to be a better person.
