Currently there is no flavor regarding individual Legions, no differentiation, thus no personal attachment of a player towards a particular Legion. My suggestion is to give a reason is to remedy that plus give more roleplay aspect towards individual Legions. So here are Legionary Legacies.

First Legion size should have a maximum of 20 cohorts, this could be modified via Military Traditions, Events or Tech. This aims to prevent people from just stacking up all their cohorts into a single legion to gain all the bonuses.

Second is to allow Legions to gain Legacy Experience. The base experience rate would be 15 per month but this is multiplied by the % of the Legion's capacity is filled. So a Legion with 5 Cohorts would gain 3.75 experience per month since 15 x 25%. This is to prevent people from just creating a lot of legions to start gaining experience from the start of the game.
Legions would also gain 3 times the experience when in combat ( a simple +30xp thus is also multiplied by number of cohorts) and 50% more when sieging (also a simple +7.5xp). You could also gain xp from events.

Legions that are stack wiped would be removed thus loosing all your unlocked Legacies, ouch.

Experience would be spent on Legionary Legacies. There are 4 Legacy trees which would represent Martial, Finesse, Charisma, and Zeal.

There are 8 Legacies per Legacy tree. Each Legacy has 3 levels except the end one which only has 1 level but is very powerful. Each Legacy would require 1,000 Experience to be unlocked, except the Last which is free if you unlocked all 3 levels of all the other legacies. Thus it would require you 21,000 experience to unlock one tree meaning you could only realistically fully unlock 2 Legacy trees in the entire game.

Here are examples of Legacy trees to help visualize what it would look like.

Martial Legacies named Tactical Legacies would be centered around helping you in the battle itself thus giving more Morale, Discipline and other combat bonuses. It would look something like this:

Individual Legacies would only need you to unlock at least 1 level of its requirement thus the Siege Engineer Legacy would only need 1 level of the Morale recovery Legacy.

Finesse Legacies named Strategic Legacies gives bonuses that indirectly help you in combat like upkeep reduction, unit supply weight reduction or movement speed bonuses.

I could also think of the Zeal tree giving conversion bonuses or unrest reduction for the Province or Region where the Legion is located. Charisma tree could also provide loyalty bonuses for the Commander and the cohorts.

Having Legionary Legacies would give Legions more identity and flavor, this may also give them specialized roles like a Legion that is specialized in sieging enemy forts, or one that is a mobile task force or even one that is specialized in lowering unrest.

I like the general idea, but it feels like it will make monarchies and republics even stronger compared to tribes who won't have access to legions. Interesting thoughts though.

How did you do this? how did you move a thread from suggestions to Senatus Populusque with all the replies and everything? is this magic?

Better not discuss balance until 2.0 is live. Plus they could just increase Tribal levy size to compensate. Also late game you should already be Changing your government.

I Thought it was on the suggestions.... sorry!! And well done!

What about a legion with legacies that you separate in two or more legions, will all have the same legacies?

How do you simulate veterans? I mean, who is the owner of the legacy, the general, the soldiers? When the soldiers retire, the legion loses all the legacies or they keep on to the next generation of soldiers?

I found these to be a problem when I proposed the thread below and I thought It was not feasible for the above reasons.
