Russia. 1962. A land torn apart. Most Russians today live under the rule of brutal warlords, would-be dictators, and fanatical ideologues. In northwest Russia, however, there is a place where democracy rules.

tno_komi.png

Here, in the Republic of Komi, all are welcome, regardless of their beliefs. So, let’s see how that’s going?

5aa22d7456db5.image.jpg

Oh.

Welcome to another TNO AAR! If you haven’t seen my previous AAR, covering the Siberian Black Army, I strongly advise you to do so. I’ll be making occasional references, and I won’t be explaining quite as much of TNO’s lore or mechanics as I did last time.

One thing I will bring up: perhaps the main reason why there is so little TNO content on this forum is that forum rules ban posting swastikas, and this mod has a lot of swastikas. I’m going to do my best to cover them up with tooltips, and edit out the ones I can’t cover up, but one or two may sneak through. I’ve already messaged the mods regarding this. If you see an errant swastika, I’d ask that you let me know first, so I can remove it.

This time, we are playing as the Republic of Komi. Rather than attempt my own summary, I’ll copy-paste from the country selection screen:

“As the West Russian Revolutionary Front collapsed at the end of the West Russian War, it was in Syktyvkar, capital of the Komi ASSR, that the civilian government of the Front found themselves in. From the witches' brew of WRRF officials, Soviet political exiles, refugees, and those who would be unwelcome in other statelets, the Komi Republic took form, establishing a constitution and democratic institutions which served to end the cycles of violence which had afflicted it.

However, all is not well in the Republic - political conflict and scheming is reaching a crisis point, and it seems that the days of this democracy are limited.”

3F3F8BD6E81FA39CE8206FB0A765549AF154E6B7

Komi is located in the northern part of West Russia, centered on the city of Syktyvkar (also known as Ust-Sysolsk).

Our army is not bad, actually. We have three divisions of light infantry, one of regular infantry, one of elite infantry, and even one mechanized division.

33EE0A67AB8505684B1960474B1CE9CC0CB8CCA9

We even have an air force! A horribly obsolete air force, but still an air force.

10B3C0EB40412D56EDEAEAB0C687CB8D736963F4

Our industry, on the other hand, is quite poor.

4F05E5F3E49DF3B80E388B6583578344285AC011

There are many things that just suck about living in West Russia in 1962. But the worst part (unless you’re unfortunate enough to live in the territory of the Aryan Brotherhood) is the regular air raids by the Luftwaffe.

F058228ECA75D11199A4BF16DB3989E828EEFAA6

Acceptance of all political ideologies sounds very nice. However, the reality is that it makes Komi very dangerous. Most political parties have their own paramilitaries, and street fighting is commonplace.

9B97E5DC633890E1AF48403A97DFC9AA378E9BDA

But not all conflict is visible. Behind the scenes, plots and schemes afflict the Republic. It remains unclear if democracy can survive.

08E76FF172F3A0920885CCC6BC1CB9F75AE0A210

We also have a stockpile of chemical weapons. In a country riven with political infighting and radical ideologies.

So, who’s got his finger on the button?

C744AF3E99197B193C98F576DA72C239BC792EF9

The founder of the Republic, President Nikolai Voznesensky is facing a wide array of challenges. But he also has strong support within the People’s Democratic Socialist Party (DSNP) – and, oddly, a personal friendship with Andrei Zhdanov, one of the leading figures in the Communist Party.

Given the ideological diversity of Komi, I’ll also be going into more detail about TNO’s ideology system. TNO has a total of eleven ideologies (each with its own color, naturally):

Authoritarian Socialism (dark red)
Libertarian Socialism (bright red)

Social Democracy (pink)
Liberal Democracy (light blue)
Conservative Democracy (dark blue)
Authoritarian Democracy (light gray)

Despotism (dark gray)
Fascism (orange-brown)
National Socialism (dark brown)
Ultranationalism (black)
Burgundian System (purple)

Given the setting, it's not surprising that the ideological spectrum is tilted so heavily to the right. Also, in each episode, we'll cover one ideology in detail. Today, we’ll cover Social Democracy:

2E9E4AEAB29BD762AE3D284649A934DC25547927

This is a pretty well known one, especially if you live in Europe. It’s capitalist democracy, but with lots of reforms and regulations to keep the capitalists under control.

I tried Komi as my first game, and I don’t remember it going all that well – although in hindsight, a Suslov coup was maybe not the absolute worst of all possible worlds…

Excited to see which way you try and take things!

Exited to see where this goes ... (I am still hoping for a monarchist one at some point though)

I'll be following along. Though I didn't get the leftwing coup I wanted in my game, I did keep the DSNP in power, which ended up being interesting. Unfortunately I was completely unprepared for the final battle and got steamrolled by Rurik II.

I shall be taking notes from your AAR so that I may learn how best to play West Russia!

With our collection of ideologies, Komi’s internal politics are… complicated, with multiple factions and several important figures. We have several options to deal with the major factions and figures. Let’s meet them now!

7491A2B61D6059B8A2AEF7BCD2BF82D928291C6F

Alexei Kosygin leads the Union of Young Reformers (SMR), a more hardline centrist faction (Liberal Democrat).

F6E446693A6E224156C86719AC64BBB843380A6F

Svetlana Stalina, daughter of Soviet politician Joseph Stalin, leads the security-minded Sovereign Democratic Party (PSD), a faction bent on protecting democracy at all costs (aka Authoritarian Democrat). Along with the SMR and DSNP, they make up the Centre faction of Komi.

91B151ECCCEBCED2FD9EA5E875E513487CDF2437

The Komi Left faction is dominated entirely by the Communist Party of Komi (KPK). However, they are not immune to factionalism. The Komi Communists are divided between the orthodox wing of Mikhail Suslov and Ivan Serov (Authoritarian Socialist), and the reformist wing of Svetlana Bukharina and Andrei Zhdanov (Libertarian Socialist).

56F88EF583D081A72EFE9EDDE1799DCD73BB76B7

Mikhail Suslov is a political mastermind, believed to be behind much of Komi’s political machinations.

3A506F725F2F5508DD93C3D3EF92A0B54D37566C

Andrei Zhdanov is quite an oddball. He is highly influential within his own party, but often defers to his friend (and current President of the Republic) Nikolai Voznesensky.

There is even an entire mechanic devoted to Zhdanov and Voznesensky’s relationship. Voznesensky can ask Zhdanov for all sorts of assistance, but that will come at a price… eventually.

3A506F725F2F5508DD93C3D3EF92A0B54D37566C

Finally, we have Svetlana Bukharina. The daughter of Nikolai Bukharin, the last leader of a united Soviet Union, she is both energetic and ambitious.

The Passionariyy Organization is basically a political party masquerading as a far-right social club of sorts. It comprises numerous factions, but it has one unquestioned leader.

C5688AF30BAB89BEC247F7693E66FD62C6C2595B

Lev Gumyilov certainly has some odd theories. He views Russia as an inherently Asian civilization, not a European one, and believes that other Asians (particulary the ethnic minorities within Russia) are their brethren, and that they should unite against the Germans. What cannot be ignored, however, is his political acumen, managing to unite the various far-right factions together under the Passionariyy (Ultranationalist).

1456F93EB10948661705BFBB82E2663DD1928249

Igor Shavarevich leads the moderate (Fascist) wing of the Passionariyy. He styles himself an advocate of democracy, but one based on the right values

6A20EDDC6990B8B651DBB706DC8494D2010BD7AB

Finally, we have Sergei Taboritsky, leader of the monarchist Society for the Restoration of the Russian Empire (Despotist). In and of itself, this is not that unusual. There are currently two claimants to the Russian throne in Russia right now – one of whom (Vladimir III) is just to the south of us, ruling the so-called Principality of Vyatka – plus that lunatic Rurik II in Kemerovo. But there is something up with Taboritsky. He doesn’t seem entirely sane…

As with all other Russian warlords, we have the ability to raid our neighbors, and use that loot to develop our society.

D7E4112797985FD348FB758D80773235508CA155

We are also able to purchase military equipment from the arms merchants who rule the Republic of Zlatoust.

Finally, it’s time to meet the neighbors!

19F1A93B4434001C82E782D24A10977E6380BEBF

As mentioned before, directly to the south is the Principality of Vyatka, ruled by Tsar Vladimir III. While his claim to the throne is as legitimate as you could ask for, he is a former German collaborator.

6DB928ED271B23D0D82CB4BC5F94C01B3AF89C98

To the east, we have the Order of St. George, who seek to reunite Russia through Orthodox Christianity.

2C7F4FFE04F2583483A5C7B2D0432EC8C490F4E8

To our north, we have the military districts of Ukhta and Plesetsk, ruled by General Georgy Zhukov and General Mikhail Tuchachevsky respectively. Both answer to Marshal Kliment Voroshilov, current commander of the West Russian Revolutionary Front.

81B975F9BEC97F5A20AE1832CF03CA3270B020FD

To the west, we have the Neutral State of Vologda, along with their puppet, the Free City of Kostroma. Both serve as intermediaries and routes for smuggling between West Russia and Reichskommissariat Moskowien.

BCA576F1238B5DFFF73A267BEB568BEB66D7746F

Gorky is ruled by a former Russian tank commander, who now uses his tanks to commit banditry. A small player, but they do have quite a few tanks…

6E47A14C3E406599B51540BE277C6377B02655A5

Another minor player, the Tatar Republic is an ethnic Tatar state.

EB1CD6FBED6C8E6453FF88DC0602A6CD0D2D0A8C

Probably the second most powerful faction after the WRRF, the Committee for the Liberation of the Peoples of Russia, aka the ROA, aka Samara, was established by the Germans as a collaborator army during the West Russian War. Since the war, they have been abandoned by the Nazis.

8EF8004EDFCEA7DE2E0A693B73F8569503582B54

Similar to the Tatar Republic, the Islamic Republic of Bashkurdistan is an ethnic Bashkir state.

Aryan Brotherhood Censored.jpg

The Aryan Brotherhood *vomits* is a bizarre organization that believes that Aryanism is a state of mind, and that Russians can become Aryans… somehow. Their ideology is twisted, and their flag has a swastika.

349103F2C4F66F98C5D6C256AE31E745B6265A7C

The Berezniki Governate is (theoretically) a client state of Vyatka. It’s led by the Mladrossi, who are Monarcho-Bolsheviks.

A5255356311F182B69CBAF6AE720D93C9A8F812A

Finally, we have the Anti-Communist Volunteer Guard, a buffer state created by Finland to protect their (newly expanded) territory.

35ECC05AAAF1517C2AEAE9D5F3FBE482D38C2976

With all that dealt with, it is finally time to take our first focus. Next episode, we will actually unpause!

Restore the Monarchy! Restore the Tsar! Restore Russia!

Nice to be reminded of the set up. I went into my (abortive) play quite blindly, so it’s interesting to see the situation laid out a bit more methodically. Good luck with the unpause.

Also, I fired up TNO last night for the first time since the update. Decided to go with Sablin. Not really much clue what I’m doing, but so far I’ve had mixed success with things like holding back looting raids. (My suspicion is that it’s something to do with my troops… leg infantry doesn’t quite seem to cut it, but I can’t yet build motorised units for want of resources.) Quite a big of trial and error going on, but it’s fun to learn a bit about east Russian play.

It'll be interesting to see which direction you take Komi. I'm sure we can probably rule out a Holy Russian Empire playthrough due to the Gamer's Cross on the flag and how overall soul-crushing the whole experience is. Still, lots of other ways this could go!

I won't be doing Taboritsky. However, I do plan to play my cards rather close to my chest (including not revealing every decision I take). It's clear from my last AAR that people were most invested in the story, not the mechanics.

I had forgotten just how chaotic Komi actually is on the ground. Good lord. I'll be interested to see which direction you start to take things over the next few updates. We've already seen the first small hint with Kosygin sidelined…

(Incidentally, I was amazed to see Kosygin win out in my current game, although he was eventually bested by the WRRF (in turn beaten by the collaborators in Samara to unify the West). But the East is much nicer: the Black Army took the centre, and I took the Far East as Sablin. Cue peaceful unification of Siberia and very little to stop a resurgent, libsoc USSR taking back the West in the end.)

Many would argue, particularly in the light of what we have recently learned about Suslov, that our greatest threat comes from the Left. However, the very fact that we have learned this about Suslov shows that this is not the case. The Communist Party of Komi is very much a known factor, including its internal factions. Suslov and Serov are dangerous, but we can count on Zhdanov and Bukharina to oppose them. The Passionariyy is another story. Not only are they outright fascists, but they are completely dominated by Lev Gumyilov. Shafarevich is a bureaucrat, Taboritsky a lunatic. We must focus our efforts on bringing them to heel.
