Russia. 1962. A land torn apart. Most Russians today live under the rule of brutal warlords, would-be dictators, and fanatical ideologues. In northwest Russia, however, there is a place where democracy rules.
Here, in the Republic of Komi, all are welcome, regardless of their beliefs. So, let’s see how that’s going?
Oh.
Welcome to another TNO AAR! If you haven’t seen my previous AAR, covering the Siberian Black Army, I strongly advise you to do so. I’ll be making occasional references, and I won’t be explaining quite as much of TNO’s lore or mechanics as I did last time.
One thing I will bring up: perhaps the main reason why there is so little TNO content on this forum is that forum rules ban posting swastikas, and this mod has a lot of swastikas. I’m going to do my best to cover them up with tooltips, and edit out the ones I can’t cover up, but one or two may sneak through. I’ve already messaged the mods regarding this. If you see an errant swastika, I’d ask that you let me know first, so I can remove it.
This time, we are playing as the Republic of Komi. Rather than attempt my own summary, I’ll copy-paste from the country selection screen:
“As the West Russian Revolutionary Front collapsed at the end of the West Russian War, it was in Syktyvkar, capital of the Komi ASSR, that the civilian government of the Front found themselves in. From the witches' brew of WRRF officials, Soviet political exiles, refugees, and those who would be unwelcome in other statelets, the Komi Republic took form, establishing a constitution and democratic institutions which served to end the cycles of violence which had afflicted it.
However, all is not well in the Republic - political conflict and scheming is reaching a crisis point, and it seems that the days of this democracy are limited.”
Komi is located in the northern part of West Russia, centered on the city of Syktyvkar (also known as Ust-Sysolsk).
Our army is not bad, actually. We have three divisions of light infantry, one of regular infantry, one of elite infantry, and even one mechanized division.
We even have an air force! A horribly obsolete air force, but still an air force.
Our industry, on the other hand, is quite poor.
There are many things that just suck about living in West Russia in 1962. But the worst part (unless you’re unfortunate enough to live in the territory of the Aryan Brotherhood) is the regular air raids by the Luftwaffe.
Acceptance of all political ideologies sounds very nice. However, the reality is that it makes Komi very dangerous. Most political parties have their own paramilitaries, and street fighting is commonplace.
But not all conflict is visible. Behind the scenes, plots and schemes afflict the Republic. It remains unclear if democracy can survive.
We also have a stockpile of chemical weapons. In a country riven with political infighting and radical ideologies.
So, who’s got his finger on the button?
The founder of the Republic, President Nikolai Voznesensky is facing a wide array of challenges. But he also has strong support within the People’s Democratic Socialist Party (DSNP) – and, oddly, a personal friendship with Andrei Zhdanov, one of the leading figures in the Communist Party.
Given the ideological diversity of Komi, I’ll also be going into more detail about TNO’s ideology system. TNO has a total of eleven ideologies (each with its own color, naturally):
Authoritarian Socialism (dark red)
Libertarian Socialism (bright red)
Social Democracy (pink)
Liberal Democracy (light blue)
Conservative Democracy (dark blue)
Authoritarian Democracy (light gray)
Despotism (dark gray)
Fascism (orange-brown)
National Socialism (dark brown)
Ultranationalism (black)
Burgundian System (purple)
Given the setting, it's not surprising that the ideological spectrum is tilted so heavily to the right. Also, in each episode, we'll cover one ideology in detail. Today, we’ll cover Social Democracy:
This is a pretty well known one, especially if you live in Europe. It’s capitalist democracy, but with lots of reforms and regulations to keep the capitalists under control.
