So this is half a suggestion, half something I just wanted to get out there and get people's opinion on.

While offices are (obviously) a lot better than they were in v1.0 (with the introduction of statementship), and there is a nice interplay between statementship and the bonus, and the choice between skill and family loyalty, I just don't find them to be too interesting. I just set and forget them, only occassionally looking at them, and only really interesting with them when an office becomes vacant, or somebody comes begging for a job.

I don't have specific suggestionson the form this could be implemented, but I feel the offices might be more interesting if it would function more like the council in CK(III) where you could set them to specific (timed?) jobs, like:
Setting a censor to weeding out the senate lists (increase party support for censor's party), or conducting a census (increase POP growth due to unregistered POPs being registered, perhaps having a chance to find some 'lost' POPs or loosing a POP due to shody record keeping), or;​
Setting the treasurer to increase state revenues, or root our corruption, or;​
Sending the Praetor to oversee a province to increase its loyalty to the state, or sent him to dispense justice to reduce unrest, or;​
Have the marshal be in command of the capital's levies, or sent the augur along with the army to increase its moral.​
(perhaps having figures for them on the map like in CK)

Perhaps be made more interesting if you could only select what job they performed if they had high loyalty (like >60), so character selection becomes even more important. You could for example limit the selection of the omens to the head priest, making having a very loyal priesthood important to the proper functioning of the state.
Perhaps even more interesting would be if a single character could hold multiple jobs, allowing for the accumulation of power for which Octavian was so famous (but perhaps only being able to perform a single job at a time, meaning it isn't desirable to accumulate all jobs in a single person).

Just something I feel like could make the offices, or council, be more interesting


Edit to organise my thoughts better:

-Offices are currently passive and therefore not very interesting IMO
-Granting offices an active role would make them more interesting to play around with
-The active rol could come in the form of jobs officeholders could do
-Jobs should be thematic to the office and have both positives and negatives
-A single character should be able to hold more than 1 job at a time, this could be toggable by laws for example
-A character could still only perform a single job at a time (making hoarding offices less efficient)
-Jobs should not just be a toggle to switch on and off, but be more like those of the council in CKIII (perhaps timed, assignable to a province or army)
-Jobs are independent of the executive (player) and can only be assigned by the player if loyalty of the office holder is high enough (say >60), or if the specific laws are enacted

Censor:
Censoring the senate

-slowly growing the influence of the censor's political affiliation by influencing the senate rolls
-would increase the powerbase of the censor
-could include events such as finding scandals for opposing party members or the ruler
Conducting a population census
-assigned to a region
-could give a small population growth bonus (for 'finding' lost pops)
-could include events such as finding lost pops, or correcting records losing POPs (which were overcounted previously)
Conduct a land census
-only available to populares censors
-could reduces powerbase from holdings
-could increase freemen happiness
-events could include finding that nobles are squating on public lands (losing a holding), or granting a holding to a friendly character

Praetor
Oversee a province

-would decrease governor loyalty
-reduced province political action costs
Preside over court cases
-would reduce unrest in a province
-increase praetor powerbase

Marshal
Would control the capital's levy
, could of course be the current ruler, but also somebody else.

Tribune Militum
Could be assigned to oversee a general

- increase general loyalty and reduce cohort loyalty gain chance
- would decrease discipline and moral of the army

Could be assinged to oversee an army
-
reduced food consumption
- increased maintainance cost

High Priest
-Would be a special case which has no jobs, but which chooses the omens. Player can only select the omens when the high priest is loyal
-Deities in the pantheon can only be swapped out if the high priest is loyal

Augur
Could be assigned to provinces to increase state religion happiness, or increase conversion speed[/spoiler

I think attaching features like Tutoring and Treatment being attached to these positions shows some appetite to this approach. The "Character Schemes" system seems like a natural avenue for expansion Office-sensitive objectives that could therefore be player adjusted or Character driven too.

I like very much your suggestion, and this point is very interesting.

I think it is the only use I have for my Consul, to scheme for political influence when it has enough popularity. But It is much more attention than the others get. ( there is also the make friends interaction, but I do not even think about who is my consul, it does not matter )

Characters are underused and they feel passive. This suggestion will help feel them beign active while in office.

There is a lot of potential in the character schemes to create a far more living wold, but you also have to be careful with it.
I actually played around with character schemes a while back (I created a specific Punic scheme called 'sailing' which is akin to 'investing' and has about 10 seperate outcomes (+a few variations of each outcome)), and thought about adding specific schemes to specific jobs (like to a governor with the 'founder' trait to invest in building a forum or something, or a high zeal governor to invest in a temple)

Unfortunately I made a small scripting error and found out the hard way that schemes are actually fairly resource intensive (due to the amount of characters in game).

Thanks. There is so much potential in the game. I hope they can realise it, and that this helps in realising that potential..

I do occassionally try to make friends for fun and if I have a very specific need, but mostly that is when playing a monarchy to try and make some people a bit more loyal. The short terms of republics don't make it all that useful.

Yes!

Also, High Priests - at least in Rome - had the extremely important charge of adjusting the calendar. This is how Caesar managed to surprise Pompey - nobody thought he'd pull off a winter invasion, but Caesar, knowing the actual date and knowing the calendar was currently out of date, knew that he still had a while left before the end of autumn and invaded. Don't really know how you'd factor this into the game though - maybe have an "adjust calendar" job that could increase pop output for a while to represent that harvesting, taxation etc is now more in sync with the seasons for a time.
