Ave imperatii,

Do you all think we'll ever see paradox releasing a major expansion or a big DLC for imperator?

I remember a while back that after some minor DLCs and patches, they had 'first major expansion' planned for imperator.

Do you think this is still possible or warranted? If so, what do you think it'll entail?

Personally, I think the resources for such an expansion are no longer earmarked for imperator.

If they do, however, I think the expansion will entail something with mechanics related to civil wars, internal collapses and invasive phenomena (ie, Christianity, cult of Mithras, etc).

I would have loved to have seen some more mechanics the way stellaris does its expansions----Could you imagine how cool a Roman forum/senate would be the way they did politics with stellaris?

Enjoy your weekends!

I think Marius was the first such expansion. They've said that the plan is to release content in patches and have the purchaseable DLC be cosmetic only, and 2.0 was certainly a major addition to the game.

We had a huge expansion that touched every Diaochi Kingdom, added levies and legions, reworked the tech and inventions and make the game pass to the 2.0 and you wouldn't call this a major expansion? I am not played Stellaris but what I heard about the mechanics I really expect is the same kind you posted.

No, no, I think you guys misunderstood. I loved Marius and yes, I think it's a big overhaul.

But what I meant is, will you think we'll see one of those 20 euro expansions? Ones that contain huge additions, mechanics, maybe even start dates...

No, because of their stated goal of adding mechanics in patches - like Legions, Levy system, revamped culture, new tech tree... - and have the DLC be cosmetic or non-essential - Honours, wonder designer, etc. So I don't think we'll see the big 20 Euro expansions containing new mechanics, but I do think we might see slightly more expensive content packs which also contain some minor gameplay bells and whistles, such as the afforementioned Wonder Designer.

I don't think we will. Firstly because as others said, they are supposed to be adding mechanics with patches, not DLC's. Secondly, because I think it would really hurt the playerbase as the game still needs a lot of work. Such expensive DLC's would just make people upset about having to pay 20 more euros in a game that many still see as little more than a beta.

No, such expansions won’t happen. Eu4 did and it is a huge mess and Problem for the game. All later released games have new mechanics integrated in the base game while the dlc itself just adds some flavour. HoI4 did it this way, Stellaris did it, it is planned for CK3 and Imperator will follow this too.

No, I don't.
I think the game is better and healthier, both short and long term, if mechanics remain a part of the free patches that are for everyone, and that the paid stuff is not mechanical in nature. If you don't, and you put big expansion 20 quid mechanical DLCs then you end up with another EU4 or CK2. And I think Paradox has moved past that business model.

HOI4 has "one big release per year with lot of features behind DLC" model. Battle for bosporus is exception only done, because new planned DLC is so big and takes so much time.

Besides man the guns and ship modding what else is locked behind a dlc?
Well, you need la resistance to use espionage and expand the resistance mechanics. And I think waking the tiger is needed if you want to send volunteers and improve your generals. Man the guns also unlocked governments in exile i think. On the other hand, imperator only locked the record of your legions and great wonders in the last dlc (apart from mission trees ofc).

Although I:R got quite a bit better, i don't think it have what it takes to make a come back. They invested for 3 years so far and going into a 4th, but the numbers are as low as Vic 2... Actualy, Vic 2 numbers are in the rise... So i guess its performing worse than Vic 2...
What i mean is, unfortunatly, i don't see pdx investing much further.

We’ve had huge expansions for Imperator, but most of the mechanics are free rather than locked behind DLC. Instead, mostly content (often faction specific) is in the DLC.

For me, this is a better way of doing DLC. I wouldn’t want them to go to the older Paradox DLC model where you feel like you need to shell out $100+ for DLC to get the full experience. I bought the new DLC for Imperator because after trying the new and improved version, I wanted the further content for the Diadochi.

There's a lot that can be done with this era, and a lot that has been done already. Overhauling trade, tribals, and tweaking government and rebellions, then expanding the map to include SE Asia, China and more of Somalia...
Still Marius was a massive update.

To be fair that doesn't matter much. What's important to them is the DLC sales and we don't have those numbers but I'm sure they are better than Vicky 2 sales. ;)

They originally said that they are going to try a different DLC model for Imperator, which includes small DLCs rather than big ones that other PDS games get.

Thats more or less true. But if you lose your player base before that, you wount sell many dlcs. Personaly, i bought I:R day one and i still didn't buy any of the content packs.
I want I:R to succed, but i don't want to drop money in a game i'm still not happy about. And i don't think i'm the only one.

Sure but I'd guess that plenty of people got the latest DLC along with the 2.0 patch. I don't think it makes much sense for them to abandon the game after spending large resources on the patch and releasing a DLC that got 'Very Positive reviews on Steam.

IR isn't in a state where you could play it every day and keep having amazing new experiences due to the lack of content.
I would guess that most people play quite a bit once new content is released and then proceed to let it sit till the next patch.
That doesn't mean though that plenty of people aren't paying for the DLC's even though they won't show up in the weekly player numbers.

Just look at the two previous examples of poor launch :

- Stellaris : the game was bland and boring on launch and it took them 2 years to make it great (with problems which still linger on tho yet the game is amazing now IMHO)
- HOI4 : same thing ==> unbalanced and boring mess and yet nowdays the game has a big following IIRC

The only difference with I:R is that I:R was a bigger screw up on launch so it takes more work to get over that very very bad press it got,
The fans of those examples got patient and now have great game, our patience so far has got us rewarded with an amazing 2.0 patch, let's wait some more, enjoy the patch and sooner or later I firmly believe that this game will be amazing and on the same level as those Paradox Classic which we love (EU4, CKII, Stellaris, VIc2 etc...)
