Preface: the player likes antagonists AI that present a challenge on every stage of the game. Rome is a clear example of this, becoming a challenge by its expansionist game. However, in the mid and late game, there is a shortage of challenges.
Observation: the AI always imports goods from the player, no matter the opinion It has or the past actions of the player.
Suggestion: make the AI switch imports from countries that have a very low opinion (<-100) to other countries with better opinion when possible. In addition, If a country with low opinion has more than 30% of the importing goods from the player, It can demand territory concessions by threatening the player to get its trades elsewhere. This will give the player a trade threat CB.
Why:
On mid game, an expansionist and arsonist player will have an economic challenge to overcome and it will make the World richer in diplomacy. The player will have to develop (League Cities, client states) or keep a happy importing market for the goods that sustains the economy.
For example, in game below the Hellenic League has pissed off its neighbors and the Roman cani. However, they keep importing their goods. If Egypt, Rome, Bosporan Kingdom and Seleukid stop importing goods from the Hellenic League, its economy would collapse. I am not arguing for a complete boycott from the AI, but some trading away from enemies would be nice. It would be an incentive for the player to diversify and/or keep good neighbors relations.
