So I bought the game and its 3 expansions just like what the internet said, also downloaded the podcat's LAA file to make it work on my 64 bit laptop. When I try to run the game, it takes me to the main menu screen and when I hit play, the game doesn't run. I tried playing the game through the .exe file itself and it says that "d3dx9_42.dll" was not found. I tried running the game through the .exe file and it still won't run. Any fixes to this? I did not change the download directory ( Program Files [x86] > Steam > steamapps > common > Hearts of Iron 3) of the game if that helps

You need various direct-x runtimes from the old days.
They are still available at Microsoft. 64 and 32 bit install all and the try again.

There is already a thread with all the answers.

Page down to the answers.

The C++ and VBRuntimes and Driectx runtimes you need are mentioned there.

doesn't work properly with Windows 10
Others have different experiences.
There are people who got it to run flawlessly on Windows 10.
Do not generalise your own experience.

Most of new generation systems have not what required for.
And that's why it doesn't work properly.
And why a dev from paradox built a patch to help it.
Once you need to do a lot of things to play a game, we can't say it runs flawlessly.
Absolutly no problem to run it on W7 or W8 long age PC. But a rubbish on a W10 new PC with no other problem.
W10 is not in this game requirements...
But : finally, it seems to be possible, with some research, to launch it. And i'm happy about that.

It is very strange. I have a fresh windows 10 install (maybe 6 weeks ago) and HOI3 installed and ran with no problems on my PC. This was the steam version.

Win10 was a clean install, not an upgrade from windows 7 or 8 and I have all the DLCs.

It was not a upgrade from W7 or W8 for me as well. All DLC. Nothing different with other install on W7 PC (x2) and W8 PC
And W10 PC very new.
These bloody game compatibility problems with W10, i guess.

Many times its also modern high end hardware (from the games perspective-2009!!!)
that isnt compatible with the game. e.g. screen reslutions, gfx drivers and other stuff.

Correct.
Finally, i found a compromise. And for such a good game, that's the best conclusion for HOI III lovers who would have such problems first.
I will test all that in a complete lan multiplayer game with 4 accounts. The dream. 1936 campaign dealing with France, GB, US and SU!

Keep an old computer with 8GB RAM and preferably some further hardware for replacements combined with an old OS.
Best would be Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 that works too.
Conserve the machine with --> Macrium Reflect Backup in an image.
You can restore it on any similar machine even with slight hardware differences.
My way of saving the day.;)

Aside from having to download the older C++ runtime components, I had issues with my first attempt at an installation on my latest PC putting stuff into the Windows 10 registry that was preventing a new install from working. I had to flush out the old pieces with a registry cleaner, then re-do the installation. No problems since them, and the game has been remarkably stable.

I kept an older PC as a backup machine, and have dragged it out of the attic on a couple of occasions to hook up to the newer monitor, rodent, and keyboard in order to play a few old games on CD that I can't or won't re-purchase as a download, for various reasons.

Stares from my 6-computer LAN AAR game...

Macrium Reflect Backup in an image.
I recommend clone with hardware like Netis station.
Making a clone with Macrium can make sometimes problems of license...Image, i don't know. But i had so much experiences when i tried to recover machine with image and it didn't work each time for different reasons that i prefer to make a clone without any software now.
That's the only solution that always works well for me nowdays.

Thats funny.
I never had any problem with a license when restoring.
The machines were licensed before the backup was made.
I have restored multiple machines in various environments over a decade now.

it had nothing to do with win 10, all it did was make the exe LAA, so that a tool wasn't needed to do so
Lucky man... I do want but it can't and no solution.
