A Tale of the Flame Logo.png

Before the game:

Starting date: 1.1.8200 (200 AC)
Character: Justys 'Brightflame', 20 years old (born 6.12.8179), R'hllor, High Valyrian
House: Brightflame, cadet branch of Targaryens
House words: “Knowledge lights the way”
Title holding: High Lordship of Harrenhal (1 province owned)
Vassals: 2 counts + barons
Suzerain: Lord Paramount of Riverlands

From author:

AGOT mod CK2 was always one of my favorites, due to both its content and the fantasy world of GRRM’s books – even if I didn’t read books and I know the lore only from the TV series, internet, this mod and 'A World of Ice and Fire’ book.

So when I finally got satisfied with CK3’s great start, I thought of returning to Westeros, especially it was around patch 2.4 of CK2 when I played it last time. But the mod is not yet ready for CK3 so I just returned to its great predecessor.

Please bear in mind that despite many efforts I never felt satisfied with playing characters already existing in mod. Being interested in alternate history this wasn’t a problem for historical characters of vanilla, but somehow it didn’t work here. So I used my OC created for other fandom to add here, made a sub-mod to not bother with Ruler Designer (and editing saves) every now and then... just had to write some nice backstory.

So here it is, I hope you will find it interesting. I haven’t done any AAR since ages, so please comment and share your opinions, while I’ll do my best to entertain you.

Modifications:

Game & version: Crusader Kings 2, patch 3.3.4 (SOHY) + all main DLCs
Main mod: A Game of Thrones v. 2.2
Sub-mods: AGOT Tale of the Flame (my own, private), AGOT Reformations, High Lordship of Bear Island, Bigger Interface for Game of Thrones (added later)
Game Rules: From below, there is one not visible and I forgot about it, but it was set in vanilla game - rulers had received generic marriages and offspring; it quite suited the game so I left it as is
Code:
    game_rules=

Q&A:

Why creating my own character and dynasty?

I admit, I have not read any of GRRM’s books. I could not experience its beauty, as for a long time I find no time nor interest in taking any book and read it during my free time. Most of the time spent since 2011 are computer games and sometimes TV.

At the time I’ve had access to HBO and already heard of newly emitted TV series called “Game of Thrones”, which caught my interest. And once I started to watch it, it really got me interested. At least to the point of searching some information on the internet. But honestly, while having a good time, I was only able to watch first two seasons. I started the third one, which I already had problem to find time to watch, but reaching the point of tortures... this was kind of discouraging and I turned it off - to watch later, at some better time - but in the end, I never returned to it again.

It didn’t stop my interest though, so when I noticed AGOT mod for Crusader Kings 2, the game that was already taking lot of my gaming time (over 3,5 thousand hours since CK2 release), I felt I should install it and play. While at the time, despite best efforts, I could not find myself playing any existing character, simply not being the thing I was looking for.

I was really interested in different things at the time: history, languages, people’s names... Solid foundation to create something on my own in a fantasy world of Ice and Fire. I was also a huge Gothic games fan and the character names of Gothic series seemed suitable to be implemented here. After playing Arcania (I know, I know, but it had "Gothic" in it's title back then) I kind of liked the name of lord Ethorn VI, enough to use it now in the mod. And so using Ruler Designer and later modifying the save file I have started to play as Aethorn I of Harrenhal (with plan to reach VI). Didn’t last long, but at least I liked playing this game session.

I took some break from the mod, but returned to it later. I knew I’d create my own character like before, but this time it was not Aethorn who I was about to play.

I was also engaged in a way different fandom, to the point where I created my own OC and started writing his story in that world. Like I mentioned, I really loved languages and history, so the backstory of character I created was highly oriented on Latin and Roman culture. And – surprise, surprise – the Valyrian was also inspired by it.

So once I decided to return to AGOT mod, I knew I would rather add my OC as a game character. I tried those new bookmarks, new characters and dynasties (like Reynes or Starks), but even years before the book events I did not feel comfortable playing "existing" characters from this world. It was after a long while, the mod grew bigger again, so I decided to settle up during Aerys II’s reign in Duskendale (inspired by story of Duskland Kingdom of old I read on the internet). Thinking of the character’s name, and not knowing much of High Valyrian language created by David J. Peterson, I simply put my OC's original name (or rather it's English version) in the game, just bastardizing the first name’s suffix (latin -us to valyrian -ys).

And so Lord Justys Brightflame – of a cadet dynasty of Targaryens – was born. I played quite enjoyable game session as a new lord of Duskendale (to even reach Kingdom of Stepstones at the end), but the time passed and so the next CK2 patches and DLCs, so I moved on, even taking break from CK2 at all.

Once back to the game there was a new patch coming up soon, so I was afraid to play AGOT mod. Not that I didn’t take any effort – even more, I resigned from simply editing save file and set to actually modding the mod, putting my character directly into mod files – so I could always update it with the new patch.

But I knew it will take time, so in the meantime I started playing other mod. Unfortunately, I found it so enjoyable that, despite all, I got stuck in it for a greater session, not updating the game in the end. But this was a tougher time in my life, though, so I haven’t had that much time to play as before. After 3 years, the game finally reached its last patch and I haven’t get to planned end date yet.

Then with the release of Crusader Kings 3, a fan like me couldn’t just not try to play it, so my next game was placed there.

But once you played Game of Thrones one cannot easily forget about it. CK3 was still in its infancy, the AGOT mod set as planned, but it will take lot of time before I can actually play it. Also, CK3 differed from its precedessor in terms of modding, so I’d need to learn it first if I want to add new character.

Urging to play in Westeros again, there was only one way – I updated CK2 to the latest patch and installed the newest AGOT mod version I found!

I knew I’d rather revive Justys Brightflame, but I had to prepare the mod files again. And instead of adding them directly to AGOT mod, I changed them into my personal sub-mod. Now it is ready, nothing gonna stop me! But wait, why not preparing an AAR as well? If time let me, it won’t be that hard.

And here I am, with you, while my Tale of the Flame is ready to start...

Why this bookmark / year / place? Are you related to Aerion Brightflame?

Previously when I implemented my OC into mod game I found it a perfect coincidence that Aerion was nicknamed ‘Brightflame’, the same name as his. And knowing from A World of Ice and Fire book that he had a son, I treated it as an opportunity and made Justys his grandson.

But playing again, surrounded by characters I knew from the series? When you think of, it is kind of interesting, and a fan like me liked the idea at the time. But no, due to all those sympathies and grudges, I started shipping other characters and tried to interfere with their offsprings, not focusing on my own dynasty enough and getting stuck in save files – so you know, X and Y could have Z children like I wished for. After such experience I rather wanted to set it up at earlier bookmark, hoping my knowledge of characters of that time won’t spoil me the fun again.

But if not descending from Aerion Brightflame like I did before (perfect reasoning for dynasty name, after all), and wishing my character to be Valyrian (Targaryen) blood anyway, where and when else could I place my game start? Reading AWoIaF in the meantime, I finally got into a good conclusion of where and when Justys could get born.

There were lots of Targaryens in history of Westeros, but not many opportunities to have additional one – and from a cadet dynasty, to add things up. But there was one king that didn’t bother much, simply enjoying his life and living lots of offspring, not only the legitimate ones. Yes, king Aegon the Unworthy, fourth of his name, was a perfect candidate for a father of bastard dynasty!

Now I only had to pick the mother. Choosing from king’s multiple lovers (as well as considering other girls to make them), I finally decided to use his last mistress, Serenei of Lys. Intelligent and with Valyrian beauty, how could her son not be a descendant of Old Valyria? Now, family issues fixed, now let’s talk about the lordship.

Of course I wanted to rule in Harrenhal, who wouldn’t?!? Especially when you play as Targ descendant with aspiration to hatch an egg. But how to justify my OC taking it over? Thankfully, since 200 AC in game, Harrenhal is ruled by Lady Danelle the Mad, who gets to be similar age as my character, hence becoming a perfect bride-to-be. Even if I had other wedding plans in mind, I couldn’t just get past such opportunity. Having a mad wife? No worries, we can get rid of her later if ever needed.

What were the changes in storyline?

Knowing that Serenei arrived to Kings Landing around 178 AC, and that she died giving birth to Shiera Seastar (181 AC in mod), I had enough time to put another Great Bastard just in place. This was a good starting point here, another bastard wouldn’t make a difference.

Living with other Targaryens, Justys gets to know his siblings, especially Daeron, the legitimate(?) successor of Aegon IV. This is crucial, because it had to be the king to help situating the bastard as a fiancé to Lord Lothston’s daughter and heiress. To ensure brother’s sympathy, you cannot support Daemon’s claims, so the side taken in Blackfyre Rebellion was rather obvious. Nevertheless, I wondered on marrying with Daenerys Blackfyre... This still might be the thing, but only if Danelle dies. Game allows such scenario more than ‘real’ Daeron the Good would in the books/series. Nevertheless I will keep roleplaying, even if the game mechanics might make it difficult for me.

Squired by Brynden when the rebellion started, Justys has not gained much of a swordfighting experience, being just a competent wielder. More we can say on his travels where he could learn leadership techniques on organizing troops and sieges.

To spice things up, I decided that the son of Serenei would get interested in his Lysene heritage, not to mention his grandmother was also Lyseni. Great in mind but weak in body, future lord resigned of longer fight and after few battles has set sails across the Narrow Sea to get to Lys. Then moving further to Volon Therys and visiting the Temple of The Lord of Light in The Great Plaza, where Justys would convert to R’hllor faith. He met the red priests in Lys and he already knew his mother also worshipped the God of Flame and Shadow. Due to proximity, Justys took the land way to Mantarys, which was really hard and dangerous, where he can buy a Valyrian Steel, and get to the ship back to Lys and later Westeros.

So we have R’hllor lord in Harrenhal. Additionally, when back in Kings Landing, Daeron grants him one of the Last Dragon’s eggs (additional to what we already have).

Other treasure, a sword named True Monarchist, would be rather obvious for a guy with such nickname ;) But my main inspiration is that in mod files, a Valyrian sword called "the_monarchist" was later renamed to Titan's Bite. How could you resign of such a great name?! :p So I added a new sword for myself, and named it a TRUE Monarchist, in place of the "false" one.
And if I already planned Justys to travel near Valyrian ruins, then he might have visited one of them, where he could possibly find a sword... There an event chain for this, isn't it? So bam! there's a Valyrian steel sword in our treasury.

TRUE STORY OF THE HOUSE BRIGHTFLAME OF HARRENHAL

MiniTargaryen_Aerion.png

Prologue (before 200 AC)

My dear friend,

No story can be told without its heroes, and heroes are not born in a day. Maesters of Citadel since their beginning put a lot of effort to ensure that the knowledge of events, the small and great deeds, will not be forgotten.

I know you were interested in how I am doing, serving under a new lord. Like every maester, I am deeply engaged in the matters of court in Harrenhal, ever since I arrived here weeks ago. Despite the huge cold halls and the view of burnt towers outside, there is nothing to complain, as I was given a proper room and access to everything I need. Also my current employer is a trustful lord, showing his readiness to rule at every council meeting. His wits and good deeds are explicit, even if septons and many of the smallfolk are only considering him a heretic.

However, to properly introduce you to the honourable lord I am serving now, I, Arnolf, know I would not properly tell you his story without presenting you, who he was and who he became now.

He was born in one of the chambers of Red Keep in Kings Landing, at the end of year 179 AC. His father was no other than Aegon the Unworthy, fourth of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm. But he had no comfort to be born as rightful heir of the king, as the king’s wife Naerys already died at childbirth the same year and king Aegon never remarried. Instead Justys Waters, later known by a nickname of Brightflame, was meant to stay stained forever as one of his Great Bastards, children born with his noble paramours.

His mother was one of the last ones that arrived to the court, brought here by the newly named Hand of the King, Lord Jon Hightower. Serenei of Lys was born in an impoverished family of Essosi city, but with Valyrian blood staying strong in veins. King enjoyed her beauty and bedded her many times, giving birth to a son and later a daughter, when the Lysene mistress died in childbirth.

The day of her first birth was hard and Justys, born a charming yet visibly sick boy, was not believed to live more than few days. Even when Serenei messaged the king from her chambers she wanted to name the child Aenys, Aegon replied mockingly, “Why bother, my dear? If he is to die, you can call him just Ys”. Some people, who claimed to be witnesses, said he enjoyed his own joke very much, laughing for hours. But the king was cruel in his nature, so in the end, he enjoyed his joke too much, he ordered to name his bastard son ‘Just-ys’. Others say this is only a legend, but knowing the situation at the king’s court during his reign, such event would not be surprising. Especially when proved to be not a proper Valyrian name.

No luck was given to the young Targaryen in his later youth – death of his mother, then father in 184 AC – the only positive was that Aegon legitimized all his bastard children, including Justys. Yet his life at the court full of his half-siblings wasn’t easy, mostly feeling responsible for taking care of his younger sister, Shiera. Thankfully he found reliance in one of his brothers, Brynden Rivers, later known as Lord Bloodraven. This tall, cunning boy, with his huge birthmark resembling a raven – hence the nickname – helped him many times, for which Justys was always grateful. Their friendship lasted and grew strong later as well, especially during Blackfyre Rebellion, when Justys served at first as a member of his private guard, the Raven’s Teeth.

Now please have in mind, dear reader, that nobody who knows Lord Justys can deny that he is very attached to his family. While staying closer with Brynden, he was not the only sibling, so it’s no surprise that Brightflame was also meeting his older brother, ser Daemon Blackfyre, with his younger children. Some say that seeing each other often, young princeling secretly fell in love with his small niece, Daenerys Blackfyre, but this is not confirmed.

In 186 AC, septons noted the child to fall on the floor one day, laying in fever for a day and a night, when he finally woke up. He claimed that he dreamt of a black dragon and a red dragon fighting, until the white dragon flew down from the sky. Many have already thought of what these words referred to, and what later appeared to be true – a conflict between king Daeron Targaryen, second of his name, and his younger half-brother wearing black dragon in red field as his banner. Due to his dream sounding like a prophecy, Justys was now believed to have Dragon Dreams. Brynden was also suspected to have his own visions, so this fact helped both boys to bond together. Ever since his vision, the boy started to often snuck out to visit Dragonpit on Rhaenys's Hill, to watch it’s crumbling, blackened walls and majestic gate keeping the entry closed. He definitely grew closer to the vision of dragons, probably wishing to become a new dragon rider someday. My lord has also mentioned during discussion that he’s seen the room with a mosaic of Targaryen’s dragon in one of the towers, but he did not remember which one.

Young Justys was an active seeker of knowledge, spending most of the time in the library or discussing with septons and maesters of Red Keep, earning the nickname of Brightflame among them. Studying a lot he was even expected to be sent to Citadel, but his destiny led him another way. At this point this beautiful, fragile prince spoke quite fluently in High Valyrian as well as its Lysene, Myrish, Tyroshi, Pentoshi and Volantene variations. He also learnt to read Old Rhoynish and Old Andal texts, while also studying the runes of the First Men.

Lord Brynden squired him once he became a knight himself, but the young prince was definitely not a warrior type, as this soon appeared to have consequences when the foreseen conflict have arisen.

Until this point I was only collecting information from others, who only whispered their words in secret to not risk any allegiances to enemies of the crown. Not many could be heard, not many could be called worth noting, all the details gathered now I personally suspected to be true. The lord himself never wanted to share his childhood memories, seeing that he doesn’t come back to them with joy. The only happy stories were about his child plays with Shiera and Brynden, sometimes mentioned being mocked by Aegor due to staying close to his hated half-brother.

During the rebellion, two princes fought many battles together, always relying on each other. However, after a year, they have finally met with Daemon Blackfyre’s army in Redgrass Field. As the battle started, the longbowmen were striking enemy forces with their arrows, putting a lot of pressure on the enemy. And here came an event that changed Justys’s mind forever – their attack reached Prince Daemon himself, killing him together with oldest twin sons, Aegon and Aemon.

Seeing three Blackfyres dead and hit by the raging counterattack of Aegor Bittersteel, where Brynden lost his eye... All if this has shaken the fair, fragile lord terribly. Probably until the end he believed that defeated, ser Daemon would subdue and Daeron would pardon his life.

Once the battle was over and Brynden went back on feet, his young squire declared that with Daemon’s death the war is over to him and he needs to leave Westeros. Brynden was angry and the brothers argued hard, but unable to knock the idea out of his head, the one-eyed Lord Bloodraven finally gave Justys his blessing. And so the younger brother departed without losing honor, taking a dozen of trustful people with him.

Lord Brightflame travelled back to the Blackwater Bay, to his lands – given at the time by king Daeron, who has given some to all legitimized brothers – only to sell them. Later in Kings Landing he found the ship, whose captain seemed reliable enough, and they set the sails across the Narrow Sea, to Tyrosh.

The trip took almost 2 years, during which they visited Tyrosh, Lys, Volon Therys, Volantis, then through the ruin of Old Valyria to Mantarys, from where they returned back to Lys and Kings Landing. I already heard the stories from knights who followed the lord, but I will write about it another time.

The return seemed to be a happy one. Lord Justys went straight from the port to Red Keep and requested an audience with his brother, king Daeron the Good. What I want you to know is that the young lord changed a lot during his travels. Justys Brightflame was not a shy, frail bookworm anymore. Might yet not become a great warrior, the journey has hardened him, what I could clearly see in his eyes. Although, to everyone’s disgust, he returned wearing a necklace with a heart in flames, followed by the priest wearing red robes. No doubt that during his visit to Essos our young lord abandoned the light of the Seven and served the Red God now. Everyone around whispered, but he didn’t bother. Once he entered the Throne Room, he kneeled in front of the throne where Daeron seated, greeted him as the great king who stands strong despite the treason, offered gifts from the travel and asked humbly to be accepted to his court back again. King stood up from the throne and drew the sword. Everyone expected Justys to be punished, as he betrayed his service by abandoning king’s army during war. But it was the opposite, as Daeron actually knighted Justys and greeted him back at his court. After all, Justys left Brynden’s troops still being a squire, so making him a knight was a true show of forgiveness from the king. Lord Bloodraven was also in the throne room, serving as master of whisperers, so the three of them left later to discuss in private.

Of even greater surprise were the king’s orders after the reunion. King sent the raven to Harrenhal to Lord Lothston, known as Manfryd o’ the Black Hood. Daeron ordered his daughter, Danelle, to travel to Red Keep, for reasons known only to him and Lord Manfryd. When she finally arrived, no one believed the news. Young Lady Lothston, the heiress of Harrenhal, has been betrothed and soon married to ser Justys! After the celebration, the new pair travelled back to the infamous Harrenhal castle to finally get blessing from Danelle’s father. But like a sudden chain of events, it happened that old Lord Lothston deteriorated in health few months later after their return and died. This of caused lots of gossips on potential murder, as red priests are well-known from their knowledge of dark arts. Lady Danelle was also considered the suspect due to her interest in the field. Thankfully no proof was found and no one dared to openly accuse the pair.

So here starts the rule of Justys Brightflame, first of his name, new lord of Harrenhal and lands on the northwest of God’s Eye. Will his rule be lucky, or not? It is not up to me, friend, but I am sure you will learn it yourself. Lord Justys is a Targaryen in his veins, so he is destined by birth for greatness, whether it will be great deeds, or even greater fall.

Side note:
I apology for some inconsistencies you might find in later screenshots, you will definitely notice change of appearance of Justys from what you see now. At the beginning I started with graphical culture of Westerosi Valyrian, hence the hair, but seeing the offspring rarely getting Valyrian look I edited him to have proper High Valyrian genes and started again.

Chapter 1

First steps (200-202 AC)

With his first days of rule, Lord Justys gathered his council of trusted people – commanders of Harrenhal’s towers and mayors of the cities below. Nothing unusual, except for the declaration of the lord - he informed the council to be the one and only who can decide on everything, so while being open to advices, he will not agree to be limited by our decisions. But despite this sudden strike, no one actually dared to oppose and I had to write down the council’s approval. During the meeting, lord asked me also to confirm all his titles and rights as an heir of Targaryens. And so we prepared the document acknowledging his bloodline as a descendant of Aegon the Conqueror, as well as descendant of the Dragon lords of Valyria. I only hope that our young lord and his children will be free of their cousins’ curse, to be born either for greatness or madness.

Screenshot 6.png

I have also prepared the inventory list of the castle treasury. There are two artifacts worth mentioning – the dragon egg, received from king Daeron II as a wedding gift, and the Valyrian sword lord Justys found in the ruins of Old Valyria, True Monarchist.

Screenshot 3.png

Let me now introduce you the lord’s council members, as well as some courtiers worth mentioning. The three knights who served lord the best during his travel were honored to be his commanders, each responsible for one castle tower. The Widow’s Tower was given under custody of Ser Addam, also honoured to be Master-at-Arms, Ser Sandor brought his family when taking over The Kingspyre Tower, so the same did Ser Myles, now in charge of The Tower of Dread. Harrentown’s mayor, Alaric, is a just and quite clever person, whom Lord Justys entrusted to become his Spymaster. Then mayor of Upstream town, Symeon, while also talented, is also very selfish and rude, nevertheless Lord Justys assigned him to the role Treasurer.

Other lords who serve under lords of Harrenhal, Lord Karyl Vance of Atranta and Lord Arlan of Lolliston, were also appointed to the council – as Castellan and Justiciar, respectively.

Screenshot 10.png

The last council member, except for myself, is the Red Priestess – Tristana Merrigold. Allow me to properly introduce you to her, since her story is as incredible as you might have probably heard already.

Screenshot 2a.png

In the end of his reign, King Aegon brought the old lord Lucas Lothston to become his Hand of the King. Lucas arrived with his wife and daughter, who they say became another mistress of the fat king. Lady Falena was already believed to be Aegon’s early lover when he was a prince, as she was later sent out of court by king Viserys to Harrenhal to marry Lord Lucas. And so the same happened to their daughter, Lady Jeyne. Unfortunately they got infected with lover’s pox from the king, who caught it playing with some common whores. After he discovered it, Lord Lucas was denounced and sent back to his castle, taking them both back.

What no one really knew is that Jeyne was pregnant and gave birth to a girl, named – as you probably guessed – Tristana. But soon Jeyne died due to her sickness, so as the king. The girl was kept hidden at the court, but her presence there was more of a burden for everyone. So the courtiers schemed to act on lord’s behalf and did terrible – they sold her to Tyroshi slave-traders visiting the city market. I presume Lord Lucas would never do such thing, while he did not sentence culprits to death. Small Tristana travelled back with traders to Tyrosh, to be bought by Lyseni slave-owner. There this poor girl was taken care of by courtesans, to become one of them, but luckily, her owner needed money – so he sold her to some red priest, who took her with him, but not to the local temple... instead they travelled far, to the Great Temple in Volantis. Barely remembering her identity of Tristana Rivers, she took the new name Merrigold, which was her nickname back in Lys, and started her long training.

For many years she trained for a red priestess like many others, to finally become one – at the same time when Justys visited the temple during his travels. The young lord was interested in the arts of R’hllor followers, so he travelled here to seek knowledge in manuscripts. What he did not expect here was the miracle - as I heard, Justys was maimed during an incident with Aegor Bittersteel, actually losing his arm. But according to all witnesses, the power of Lord of the Light – or at least his priests - was supposed to be so great, that made his arm grow back! Because of this, Justys acknowledged their faith as his own, and Tristana was to become his spiritual warden. The two got attached to each other and soon Tristana – that’s what the knights said – seduced him with her magic, becoming his lover. Not long after that, however, Justys had one of his Dragon Dreams, where the dragons revealed to him her true identity. Faced with the truth, she’s been officially acknowledged as the bastard daughter of king Aegon, who as you know already legitimized all of his natural children. Then he took her with him when they moved further into mainland, straight to old Valyrian ruins and later, to the city of Mantarys. As I heard, she even saved him during an accident in the ruins, at least that’s what lord told to his men.

So Tristana returned back to Westeros and Harrenhal after years of servitude, becoming Justys closest friend and advisor. She is not as zealous as the other red priest who arrived from Essos, who I’ll also mention later, so I hope no strange rituals will happen on this court. She is really beautiful, causing envy among other ladies, with her chestnut-red hair and cornflower blue eyes – no surprise the lord fell for her in Volantis. Also, very kind and sociable person, not really bothering people with converting unless they wanted to – but for now not many of them decided.

But Triss, as she likes to be called, is not the only lady brought by Justys from his travels. He also arrived with white-haired Vaesys, the daughter of lord of Mantarys. From what I heard he saved her from slave traders in Lys, where she was to be sold – so as a gratitude Lord Qavo Zobridar allowed her to stay with her savior. Not as beautiful, Vaesys is quite a fighter, so she became lord’s bodyguard.

Screenshot 2b.png

During the next few weeks, lord seemed to be rather focused on his wife, visibly hoping for a male heir to inherit the titles. He often visited her chambers, counting on a fruitful event.

If not with his wife, I could see the lord walking around the castle, observing the damages caused by Balerion, the dragon of king Aegon the first, when they attacked king Harren the Black besieged here. He already owned a dragon egg, which he often visited in the treasury, but he still hesitated with hatching.

Screenshot 8.png

Many failed attempts were made in the past by Targaryens, but for now no one ever succeeded. The era of dragon riders was lost with the Dance of Dragons – that’s what everyone thought. The fate is a comedian, though, because on the third moon of the same year, ravens brought the news from Kings Landing – princess Elaena Targaryen successfully hatched a living dragon, named Volon. When I read the news at council meeting, Justys told me to send regards to his aunt on her achievement, but I could see on his face he was displeased. After all, it was an old wretch who brought dragons back to life, not him, not even one of the young princes, who also have their own eggs. Yet it gave him hope that he can be the next dragon rider, so he quickly ordered me to bring any documents related to dragons to study.

Screenshot 9.png

Other than that, the lands were prospering, so as Lady Danelle, who brought great news of being blessed with a child. Satisfied with the information, Lord Justys asked his wife to rest properly, still visiting her to check on her health. They also walked often together around the castle garden, which helped them grow closer. Despite what everyone believed, Lady Danelle actually confirmed her love to her husband. This has not come without scandal, as not not long before his wife’s labor, following the heathen customs, Justys officially acknowledged his two mistresses as official paramours.

Screenshot 17.png

Thank Gods, Danelle has given birth to our rightful heir. The boy was named Aerys, after his cousin and second son of king Daeron, who as you probably know, died in an accident in the same year. Happy lord sent many ravens announcing this to other lords, but the bigger letter flew to Lord Paramount of Trident, Ser Medgar Tully of Riverrun, to whom Justys swore fealty when became a new lord of Harrenhal. He kindly asked Lord Tully to betroth Aerys with his older daughter, Jeyne Tully. The answer was unexpectedly positive, probably because Lord Medgar already had a son to inherit his titles.

Screenshot 16.png

Screenshot 14.png

Right after the childbirth, Justys surprisingly informed us of his travel to Oldtown, reasons unknown, taking a small troop of soldiers with him. The council was to take care of the realm, while Lady Danelle is recovering. He did not take the straight path, however, as he also visited his cousin Maekar in Summerhall. When reaching Oldtown our lord came to the Citadel, where he was looking at some very old documents I mentioned to him once – obviously, regarding dragons. Has having a son empowered his desire to finally hatch a dragon? Probably yes, even if he will never admit it.

Unfortunately for him, we had to immediately request Lord Justys to return, as from what we already heard, there was an outbreak on the shore of Bay of Claws, the sickness already reaching Saltpans and the outskirts of Lord Harroway’s town. With his return in the seventh moon, when the outbreak already reached Darry, Justys decided to not take risk and ordered to gather as many as possible and close the castle gates. We hope that this pestilence will end itself soon, as the supplies for so many people cannot last for long.

Screenshot 18.png

Please take care for now, I shall probably get busy, contacting you again after the turmoil ends. I am also curious about progress on your great work, so will be awaiting your answer.

The Brightflames look to be doing well.

I wonder how a successful R'hllorite ruler in Westeros will change things later?

Perhaps the Brightflames can take the Riverlands?

Yeah, I started pretty well, but as you'll see soon, Justys turned out to be a Targaryen of flesh and blood :)

For now I'm glad I could betroth with Tully's daughter, we'll see if she survives and give children.
As for my plans for future, I hoped to take over territories lost after Lord Harroway's death. Butterwells should worry the most, for these bastards got the dragon egg by paying with their daughters' ****s.

R'hllor's faith from beginning is actually turning game harder, because everyone have much lower opinion of me (except vassals), and without open marriage rule I'd be completely cut off of any good alliances.

And I admit, abolishing lord's council voting was abuse of an error - for some reason my all vassals got huge opinion boost for ruling years (as I checked in the files, they think I rule 300 years!). Might have been an error I caused with my submod, I removed it once I discovered it later.

Chapter 2

Here might be dragons (202-206 AC)

Dear Friend,

I apologize for quite a long break, I had a lot of duties and I know you are also focused on finishing your book. At least I hope this is the reason why I also have not heard from you until now.

Here, we are still recovering from the outbreak of Winter Fever, which has truly taken its bloody harvest. Whole Riverlands have been affected, reaching as far as the mountains on the north, to the west to Crackclaw Point and even the Kings Landing.

Screenshot 22.png

Wisely enough, Justys ordered to seclude as many people as possible within castle walls soon he heard of disease attacking Darry and Maidenpool. The vastness of this fortress showed its usefulness for once since the Great Council. In normal circumstances, these enormous black walls, the even higher towers of five, their huge corridors and rooms, where some are bigger than the throne room in Red Keep. Many lords and servants suffered from this vast space, feeling down just sitting alone in empty rooms, where it’s rather hopeless to try to light it up whole.

However, all who found shelter among Harrenhal’s huge walls were safe from sickness, which took it’s bloody harvest wherever it reached. From among the lord’s acquaintances, thankfully or not, the only victim of Winter Fever was Mayor Symeon, as he stayed in Upstream town to avoid property damages during crisis. By lord’s decision, the new Treasurer became Mayor Alaric, who was even better prepared for this role, while Ser Waltyr, one of knights at the court, was assigned as Spymaster. We all held breath when we heard Alaric got sick too, but thankfully he survived, returning to full health a couple months later.

Screenshot 11.png

The time of seclusion was hard for most of the courtiers and common folk, especially inside the cursed castle. Many talked about seeing fiery spirits of Harren and his sons wandering around castle halls, some peasants were rumoured to be found burnt to ashes, people claimed also of children disappearing, taken alive by giant bats, to the top of Wailing Tower. Lady Danelle was designated as lord's almoner, but her bad attitude towards peasants didn't go unnoticed, while her red hair and pale skin made her accused of using these bats, to feed on children's blood.

But other than just rumours, there was one person who seemed unbothered by the current situation, bringing peace and calm to people during the tough time. Lord Justys really managed the best he could. Smallfolk already spoke a lot on lord’s righteousness, calling him shortly “the Just Lord”. He despised this nickname, though, bringing memory of his name’s origin, so most courtiers tried to not mention it around him.

Lord Brightflame, as he always preferred to be called, was not only focused on managing the castle. All his free time our lord spent in his chambers, among the books he gathered from the Citadel and other sources. He also demanded to bring the dragon egg from out of the treasury to his cabinet. He also wrote a lot of letters to his aunt, Elaena, on the matter of her earlier achievement in dragon hatching. The lord was more than determined to hatch his egg, but as he said to me, he will not take any action unless he is sure he can succeed. Also, as I was informed, during his visit in Old Town Lord Justys met with the pyromancers from the Alchemist guild, but he did not spend too long there, as this was when the sickness started to get close to Harrenhal. What he managed to achieve was a flask of wildfire, which now was to become useful.

Brightflame locked himself down in vaults and ordered to not check on him for a week. Thank the Old and New Gods, nothing terrible happened, and after four days Justys came out holding a small hatchling. Finally, he achieved what he dreamt of since he was a child... what I could easily see in his blackened, but smiley face and the eyes, sparkling like the sunlight in polished amethyst. Nyx, the dragon name, seems to suit our lord as well, as this word was part of some Valyrian names. Although I am still not sure if he called her this way on purpose...

But during that time, he did not totally forget about his family. Whenever possible, his lady was always on spot, as well as the other paramours. Upon lord’s return from Old Town, Tristana declared to be pregnant with the lord’s child. Later she gave birth to a healthy daughter. Justys named her Larra, after his Lysene grandmother. Soon Lady Danelle also informed to be with child, and not long after the hatching she also gave birth to another son, Lucas. Sadly, the boy was born sick, dying a year later.

Screenshot 21.png

In further year, the time has come that Vaesys blessed Justys with more offspring, but to not stay behind of her rivals, she bore twins – a girl Viserra and a boy Viserion. The next year she was outmatched again, as both Danelle and Triss given birth to another children. Tristana gave birth first to a son named Rhaenar, while Lady Lothston’s was the girl, Jaenara. With this, he became truly satisfied with having five living children.

Screenshot 30.png

Another hatched dragon encouraged other egg owners to take their attempts. Next person who tried to hatch a dragon was Daeron, son of prince Maekar. Summerhall was far south enough and the sickness never reached them. The young princeling, once turning 13, didn’t wait any longer. I heard that Daeron was haunted by dragon dreams the same way as Justys did, while he was a kind, humble, but faint-hearted child. Nevertheless, he decided to try the same, with the consequences more tragic. Thankfully, no one died during the accident, but the dragon inside the egg appeared to be already dead, so Daeron lost his chance to own one.

Screenshot 23.png

Once the sickness went by and Lord Justys ordered to open the gates, he planned betrothals to all of his children – except for Aerys, who was already engaged. The main issue was that most of the lords in Westeros despised the way of life Brightflame took, I mean the R’hllor faith. For them, the children of his paramours were nothing more than the bastards like him, even if they are all of Targaryen blood. So while he had no problem with betrothing children of his rightful wife, as Jaenara was promised to Jonnel* Stark, son of Lord Rodwell of Winterfell, then others had it more difficult.

Even though, the lord managed to organize proper proposals, even if not always with the greatest lords of all Seven Kingdoms. Dorne was always tolerant of bastards, so Viserion was betrothed with Sarra Martell, daughter of Prince Maron and Brightflame’s older sister, Daenerys Targaryen. Brightflame also arranged daughter Viserra to wed Baelon, son of his sister Shiera with Lord Bloodraven. Larra on the other hand would have to marry Daemon Longwaters, of a bastard line of Velaryons, grandchild of aunt Elaena with Alyn the Oakenfist. His father, Jon Waters was born before she got married to her first husband, Lord Ossifer Plumm. Current Lord of Maunhill, Viserys was his half-brother, were Jon lived at the time of proposal.

Screenshot 42.png

Rhaenar had the least of luck, as he was rejected by many. In the end, Lord Justys betrothed him with Beatrice Lothston, daughter of his wife’s first cousin, Ser Manfred. He was invited to our court soon after opening the gates and Manfred’s new wife gave him two twin daughters. Engaged to a Lothston, when his mother was also Lothston’s bastard child, Rhaenar should have enough claims to Harrenhal, if ever needed.

Meanwhile, Lord Brightflame was also taking care of his other child. Nyx grew into quite strong and vigorous drake. At that time, only a handful of people knew of the hatchling, including me, his wife and paramours and the temple priest. There was no dragonpit to hold her in and she was kept inside the castle, in one of its abandoned sections. Brightflame didn’t want to spread information among folks in lower grounds, as they were anxious enough because of the sickness. Hearing they are locked down at the same place as a dragon might cause panic, or even turn into riot. After all, we speak of a flamethrowing beast, who might easily burn them down, when they were trapped inside.

Nyx was then locked down, with Vaesys on guard and our lord spending lot of free time with her to get attached to him. Though it’s hard to keep an eye on such creature all the time and Justys didn’t avoid his dragon sneaking out a few times. While I was no witness, I presume she was responsible for the burnt bodies and the rumours of giant bats stealing children – small dragon might have looked like one, especially in the dark.

Thankfully the Winter Fever began to decline, so the gates were finally opened and everyone returned to a daily life. There was a lot of damage to fix, but our life could go back to normal, at least in some sense. During the years Nyx grew into a truly magnificent drake – so now with smallfolks leaving the castle, Justys decided to finally tame her, This way, Lord Justys Brightflame could be rightfully called a dragon rider, second to his aunt Elaena (already known as a dragontamer), one of the first in this new era.

Screenshot 29.png

The third dragon rider emerged in the next, in person of Prince Maekar’s second son, Aerion. After the fail of his brother, he cautiously studied the successes of his farther family members. With help of aunt Elaena, he has become an owner of a dragon named Heartfyre. His hatchling was carefully taken care of in their mansion of Summerhall, until he became a fine, nimble dragon. When the time came right, prince Aerion flew the sky above Summerhall to prove his achievement.

Screenshot 32.png

The seclusion had other small success, as everyone were actively supported during that time by the red priests and priestesses. Everyone helped providing food and healthcare, teaching the words of Lord of the Light and his battle with Azor Ahai to come. Many folks were still dedicated to the Andal faith, however some families actually acknowledged path of the Red God. This meant that those who lives far from the castle may need small shrines built in local areas, but Lord Justys still had enough funds he shared with Tristana to make this actually happen.

Screenshot 36.png

By the way, have I mentioned you before that Tristana is not the main priest responsible for the castle temple? Along with her, Justys arrived with another priest, Rhogar, who took custody over the new red temple. The temple is situated near the Harrenhal’s godswood, where you can still find a heart tree of the Old Gods. Back when Justys took over the castle and put Rhogar in charge of the temple, this devoted priest insisted on burning down the trees, or at least close the place from people and cut off the terrible face from the weirwood tree – as because of its presence, followers of the Old Gods still visited the place to pray.

Here is what Lord Brightflame said to Rhogar when he heard of his idea:

“In Essos, I was told there are no other gods than the Lord of Light and The Great Other, confirmed when I acknowledged the sacred words in the God’s great temple of Volantis. Now you tell me that this is the symbol false gods that we should burn. While I am aware that Children of the Forest saw deities in everything around them, we have never learnt the names of these deities, which means we cannot be sure who they really worshipped.

Now tell me, priest, isn’t The Lord of Light the greatest creator of life, and trees being its foundations? If that’s true, then whatever have The Children seen in these trees, it had to be His might, not of some false gods who doesn’t even exist.

The same goes to the face – call me blasphemous in my words, but if the might followed by Children belonged to Lord of the Light, wouldn’t this face belong to him as well? I know we are forbidden to show his face, but Children wouldn’t know it, whatever their reason was. These are just my thoughts, I cannot be the judge here, so I will hold on with verdict.

But be aware that none of my predecessors touched the godswood – ever since Harren the Black, the trees stay here as they were, so as the face. Therefore I will not allow you to destroy it, but in R’hllor’s name, I promise you – I will do my best and I will carve the hearts of people with Lord’s teachings, like Children once carved the face on tree, so this place will become but a monument of the old songs.

As I promised to bring the light of truth to the people with my life and deeds, not with fire and blood.”

The same day I have met with Lord Brightflame to discuss the current situation at the court, which of course could not avoid the earlier event. I honestly admitted him that he is brave, to stand against his own faith to prevent the godswood. What he replied was the truth, which I hope will stay with him forever:

“The faith is like a torch and the torch is but a tool. It is up to people how they use it – whether they would set up a campfire, or burn down the village”.

I mention it because Rhogar died while ago due to bad health. The temple was then given to one of the newly appointed red priests, who were previously taught by him. Jared is nothing alike however, and everyone easily recognized him as wicked.

* - Sorry, I edited Stark's son name from Brandon, as later in save file I noticed he was renamed (some mod function I guess because there are many) - but I changed it back to the original name as I like it better

Interlude

Stories from across the sea (196-197 AC)

What I heard from his companions, they reached the port in the early evening, and slept that night with nothing worth mentioning after they found a place to stay in the city. They did not know why Lord Justys travelled here, and once the morning came, he left with one of the knights without saying where, ordering others to wait for his return. Later that day Ser Myles who left with Brightflame rushed into the room and without saying anything, he brought them to him. They couldn’t just believe what they saw.

It appeared that in secret, young lord found the place where the widow of his treacherous brother, Lady Rohanne Zokan, stayed with her children. He ordered Ser Myles to stay on guard in front doors and entered, to meet her and beg for mercy. What he has not thought of though, is that Aegor was with them... seeing him in the house, Justys had no time to defend – with one swing of Blackfyre sword, he cut off his arm. The knight came in hearing noise and drew the sword seeing his lord on the floor, but Brightflame told him to stay still. He didn’t want to defend, knowing his guilt and ready to take any punishment. Holding his maimed arm, he knelt in front of his furious brother, looking straight into his eyes and awaiting death. This is when Lady Rohanne stopped Aegor from the final hit, helped her maimed good brother get up, sheding tears together with Justys. She forgave him his sin of kinslaying, as he took responsibility to tell her straight in the eyes. She also knew him to be unable to murder anyone, that the only reason was he served under Lord Brynden’s banners. The lady also ordered Lord Bittersteel to hold the vengeance, saying he already punished him enough.

Right after that she asked the knight to bring Brightflame’s other companions here and brought her maimed good brother to the room, where his wounds could be treated. The lady and her daughters tended him for three weeks, helping him to get better. But Tyrosh was not the young lord’s final destination, so once Justys stood on his feet, he thanked the mistress and her daughters for hospitality, and decided to sail away. Lady Zokan helped him find a trusted sailor, who he paid for transport to another Free City of Essos, the home city of his mother - Lys the Lovely.

Despite sailing through the Stepstones, known for numerous pirate hides, they luckily arrived at the port of Lys after a few weeks. But this time, after accommodation, Justys stayed in his room for a few days, reading some books, until one day he asked to accompany him during a visit to the city market. Free Cities were well known for earning wealth on a slave trade, forbidden in Westeros, so they could not be surprised seeing many slave traders around whole marketplace.

Our lord just moved along not paying attention to any of their stands, like he was searching for something else. However, he suddenly stopped next to one, where he could see faces and bodies of young boys and girls, definitely prepared to be sold as bed slaves. One of the girls caught the eye and she seemingly interested our prince. She had short, but platinum-gold hair with reddish purple eyes. He learnt that the girl was caught by pirates near Old Valyrian coast, assuming she was from one of the cities there. The lord decided to say few words to her in Volantene dialect, but she didn’t reply, still looking at us suspiciously. Then he spoke to her in clear Valyrian, and that’s when her eyes shined with hope. After that he took probably the most risky decision during our travel, buying the girl. It appeared that her name is Vaesys and she was of noble descent, taken hostage in one of the raids on old Valyrian towns. One of the knights has taken her to their rooms to help her get cleaned up. Others said that Lord Brightflame continued to ask traders for someone, but as they didn’t know any Valyrian dialect, they could not understand exactly who.

An armless Westerosi lord with platinum white hair, speaking fluently in their language – it did not take long before their group attracted attention in the city. Many people stood every day in front of their building, someone even tried to enter their room through the windows, but what is more important – they survived the night attack of assassin, apparently someone trying to kill our lord. His companions assumed they were hired by Aegor, trying to finish what he started in Tyrosh, but the proofs were dim, and attacks never repeated again.

Then one day, some poor, older pair of Lyseni nobles knocked to our door, asking to see Lord Justys. He got up from bed to see the guests, who looked straight in his eyes. The eyes could not lie, as Justys inherited his after Lady Serenei. They recognized him and he recognized them as well. Brightflame ordered others to leave to speak with his grandparents in peace. When I asked him later, he mentioned they talked about his life in Red Keep, his sister Shiera, what happened with their mother, and many other things. They again told him some old stories from Serenei’s youth and how she ended on the other side of the Narrow Sea.

Next day they offered to show them more of the city which we agreed to. There would be many things to say about the beauty of Lys, called the Lovely not without reason, which I have never seen myself. To learn more, you will have to read stories of others. For now, from events worth mentioning, I should rather focus on how Justys Brightflame visited the Lysene temple of R’hllor, and where it led him...

Chapter 3 - part 1

Betrayal (207-208 AC)

Dear Kaeth*

May the gods Old and New always guide you. I want to congratulate you on finishing next part of your book, I have already received the copy you sent. I admit this will be a great chronicle, which should become an important source for future writers.

As you probably heard, things were getting bad here recently. Ever since the scandal broke out, the dark clouds gathered around Harrenhal and Lord Brightflame. After an year since, all courtiers still move around the castle in quiet, afraid to meet the lord wandering the halls. No one feels safe here anymore.

But none of this was thought to be true when the gates were finally open after those years of seclusion. With the end of great sickness, Lord Justys decided to soothe everyone up and celebrate. He used the savings we were still left and organized a local tourney for the lords of Riverlands. I’m sure he wanted to organize something greater, but this was not what we could afford at the time, while Justys truly believed that people need this kind of entertainment. And so, the knights of Trident clashed all inside Harrenhal. The tourney was pretty nice and probably my lord was right with relieving the friction. Not much to mention, though. We haven’t had any disastrous events, thankfully, and it did not take long when Ser Tommard Heddle could be declared a winner.

Screenshot 37.png

One of the guests was, obviously, Ser Manfred Lothston, a fine knight after all. He hadn’t achieved anything during competition, but showed himself from the best side, I believe. So when Lord Justys offered him to stay in his fortress after the tourney, it would not be suspected that he might actually got into affair with his benefactor’s wife... For gods’ sake, his own cousin! But the same I could say about Lady Danelle, as she faithfully stayed beside her husband for all these years, despite the circumstances of their marital bliss, or even despite him bedding paramours regularly. Despite of this, or maybe because of it, Lord Justys had many times before proven his engagement in their relationship, even if some already knew the lady was not his true love.

Also, Lord Justys arranged the marriage of his wife’s cousin, and they already got twin daughters, Beatrice and Lythene. Even more, our lord offered to betroth his son born from Tristana, Rhaenar, with Beatrice, while Lythene was proposed to the son of banished lord of Blue Fork. Ser Otho Mandrake lost his lands for supporting Blackfyres during the rebellion, and he also recently found refuge in Harrenhal. Thanks to Brightflame’s connections at Riverrun, Lord Medgar Tully has finally pardoned Otho last year and allowed him to return to Seven Bridges.

I don’t believe this could begin before Ser Manfred arrival to Harrenhal, but no one really knows how long did the affair last when the news finally broke out. Hearing the suspicions from his spymaster, Justys has truly gone mad of jealousy. He didn’t wait long and confronted his wife, who – gods have mercy on her soul – actually admitted to have an affair. He immediately ordered to imprison both lovers, where Lady Danelle was locked in her rooms, while Manfred was sent straight to the dungeon.

Screenshot 43.png

Lord Brightflame was already stressed out before that. After all, he was a faithful partner to all his three women. Doing his best to satisfy all of them, he had to deal with lordship matters as well as taken care of a dragon. Such worries had to finally end with health detriment.

Screenshot 38.png

Both Lothstons were held captive for an year before Justys decided to judge them. During this time I saw him being a shadow of who he used to be, eating half of the food, or even skipping meals, dark circles under his eyes – making his violet eyes look dark as coal - proving he barely spelt. For days he stayed locked in his chambers or stayed with his dragon... He rarely appeared at the council meetings, either me or Tristana handing him out the overview or necessary documents. As a treasurer, Master Alaric replaced his wife in duties of lord’s almoner, carrying them out diligently.

The problem was that during her imprisonment Lady Lothston was found pregnant. The lord ordered an investigation on when the child could be conceived, proofs accusing Ser Manfred. To make things worse, Lady Danelle denied nothing of it, so the child was born already as the Lothston’s bastard. And here I’m not sure what led Justys to do so, but he ordered to name the boy Harren, as if he was to become an embodiment of the castle’s curse.

Screenshot 44.png

Screenshot 45.png

Finally, the trial was announced to happen in the eight moon of 208 AC. Lord Karyl Vance, our castellan, was designated to oversee it as the main judge. Lady Danelle didn’t agree on anyone’s help and declared to speak in her own defence. Her speech was actually convincing, pointing out some good arguments. She definitely turned many to her side, but not for long. After the speech, Lord Vance turned the tables once he started to question her. Castellan is usually responsible for financial matters, but Karyl is truly a master diplomat. Soon the trial was over, everyone reassured of Danelle’s guilt.

Screenshot 48.png
Screenshot 49.png

The last word belonged to Justys to choose penalty, but no one ever expected what happened next. Lord Brightflame, the just, honest, family-loving man, looked on his wife with cold, empty eyes – their violet so dark it felt like a stormy night. The hall full of screams and accusations slowly turned into grave silence, once everyone realized what was Danelle sentenced to. Lady Lothston, the daughter of previous lord, was about to die in a way so terrible, that everyone are still afraid of thinking of it.

Screenshot 50.png
Screenshot 51.png

The punishment was to be executed at dawn. Lady Danelle was brought in chains on the biggest square in the castle, where Justys was already there, mounted on Nyx. What happened next, all these dreadful scenes I will leave to your imagination. It didn’t take long though, only few minutes of heat and the clang of now empty chains, when the dragon got satiated. But what terrified me more was that the lord I served for year, who used to be so kind and caring, watched everything with calm. Even worse, as after it ended he was visibly happier, as if this act of sadism gave him relief.

Screenshot 52.png
Screenshot 53.png

In the light of this execution, I must say that Lord Justys treated Ser Manfred lightly, sending him to wear black.

Screenshot 46.png

Whatever happened to Justys until now, Lady Danelle was his rightful wife and his duty was to prepare a burial. Lord invited all his courtiers and vassal lords at the funeral, although the preparation were costly enough we had to incur debts to pay for everything. The biggest problem was when we found out that the part of the castle, where guests were to sleep, was in such awful state it required immediate repairs.

Danelle never abandoned The Faith, so the ceremony was to be held in local sept. Aerys put the death stones on his mother’s eyes, while she was laying on a bier. Her body was already taken care of by Silent Sisters, so we could sense the fragrance of herbs around the place. All guests lit the candles in her memory and prayed, so The Stranger would lead her safely to better world. Then she was taken to family crypt, where her body was placed next to her father. Lord Justys was present during whole ceremony, where unlike his children, he didn’t shed a single tear.

* Archmaester Kaeth already exists during AAR and is placed in the Citadel, and he is similar age as my Maester Arnolf. According to canon information we wrote Life of Four kings, so he seemed to be a good recipient of Arnolf’s letters.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it :D

Letters seemed better for me when I started to write the story, as I didn't want to use normal game retrospection (boring) or dialogues (as I suck at these...), but now I must say that going further with chapters, it became harder to keep this form.

And this chapter became so long (and picture heavy) that I had to split it, so above you have part 1, and I will post part 2 on Sunday.

I have two more chapters ready, one of them being in different form (as an experiment), but now I got stuck with the next one, so I might get delay with posting later.

Inevitable changes (209-mid 210 AC)

Like I said, Lord Brightflame didn’t stay in mourning – instead, he started looking for a new wife. Most believed, especially the interested parties, that he will now marry one of his paramours. The main obstacle was that red priests could not marry, so Tristana, while the most beloved one, might have not agreed to resign of her function. This led to belief his rightful spouse will now become Lady Vaesys Zobridar.

Whoever thought that Justys would not surprise everyone again was wrong, as he actually brought himself a new bride, specifically Lady Jeyne Waters, another bastard of Elaena Targaryen and Alyn Velaryon. Still beautiful even after her thirties, not many would expect such choice from the lord. Even after the bad opinion spread to all Seven Kingdoms, Lord of Harrenhal could marry any other, more suitable candidate.

Screenshot 57.png

But of course, the most disappointed person was Vaesys. After Justys announced his wedding plans, she dared to accuse him in front of everyone of not loving her anymore. Facing such accusations, he stayed quite calm and just replied that a wife will always be more important than any paramour. These words turned their relations into solid ice for good. Though she wasn’t officially set aside, Lady Zobridar stopped appearing at the main events, while Justys never visited her chambers anymore.

Screenshot 59.png

The whole trial sowed dissent among people living in Harrenhal. Most of them were afraid they might someday end the same as Lady Danelle, others believed her to be the rightful liege, seeing Brightflame as the usurper and tyrant. Many bad rumours were spreading around, so Lord Karyl tried to pump some people for information. Unfortunately we was attacked by some hired thugs who injured him badly, so he had to return to Atranta for some time to recover.

Screenshot 58.png

Lord Justys also informed me on having a few of his prophetic dreams, so I passed the news to our spymaster to gather intel. They were indeed proven right, like the one where Lord Bloodraven, serving as Master of Whisperers in Kings Landing, was plotting to kill their brother, Aegor Bittersteel. Aegor was in lead of a band of mercenaries gathered around him, calling themselves The Golden Company. He was also in possession of the Blackfyre sword, still supporting claims of the sons and daughter of Daemon Blackfyre. I’m not sure why would Lord Brightflame, who recently watched his wife dead with cold heart actually care of this hated half-brother, but he sent a raven to Ser Brynden anyway, asking to put an end to this scheme. I’m not sure with what words he could achieve this, but Bloodraven actually agreed to keep their brother alive... at least for now.

Screenshot 62.png

In the same letter Justys warned Brynden of Lord Alton Greyjoy, who supposedly planned on getting rid of him as well. The raven sent to the Iron Islands never returned, however I suspect that Lord Alton received this message.

Screenshot 63.png

Following months were much calmer. Harrenhal hosted the wedding of Justys and Jeyne, although it caused more debts, our treasurer barely handling the ones caused by the funeral. As per tradition, bride and groom were accompanied to their room, where they got stripped for the bedding. I must admit that our lord proven himself pretty successful that night, as it didn’t take long when we heard that Lady Jeyne was expecting.

Screenshot 64.png

But during the wedding Tristana was already pregnant as well, as I believe she was the one comforting her lord during the hard times of the trial. In 209 AC, they both gave birth to sons. Tristana was first, but Gargon appeared to be deformed, with parts of his skin looking like covered in dragon scales. On his birth, Justys decided to change his previous betrothal plans – as Beatrice Lothston was now declared to marry the younger son instead, while older Rhaenar was engaged with Rhaenys Longwaters, sister of Larra’s fiancé.

I assume this was part of revenge on Lothstons, whose claims were too dangerous to send them away, but with Lady Danelle dead and Ser Manfred serving now on The Wall, Justys didn’t have to bother with Rhaenar’s “weak” claims to Harrenhal.

But not only. Brightflame’s plans appear quite clear to me now, with both Lady Jeyne and Rhaena having typical Valyrian look, so as Princess Sarra or Baelon Bloodraven. I already had this theory that, when he can’t ensure the engagements with the great houses, Justys wants to keep the dragonseed running strong in his family. This hypothesis still has to be proven, but I’m sure it will become visible in longer period.

Nevertheless, with the birth of Lady Jeyne’s son, named Lucerys, we received congratulations from other lords on new marriage and birth – some of them suggestively pointed out having daughters to spare. The most promising offer came from Lord Bracken and Lord Darry, but choice finally fell on Cersei Bracken, daughter of our western neighbor, Lord Raymund of Southstone.

Screenshot 66.png

And so the year ends, while the archmaesters already send the news on another winter coming. I wish you a promising new year, with new successes and no unpleasant surprises. While for me, you can wish to never become Nyx’s another meal...

Chapter 4

Stags and crows (mid 210-211 AC)

To faithful and diligent Archmaester Arnolf,

May the Old and New gods always guide you. I would like to write how glad I am for offering me the position of a new maester in Harrenhal. I know you have been holding this position for 10 years, serving Lord Brightflame dutifully. I can only hope to ever reach your level, as the lord mentions you and your work with high esteem.

Screenshot 73.png

While you did mention that one of the priests tried to destroy the godswood, I have seen no information on this place being in use. Knowing that you were faithful to the Old Gods like I do, I humbly asked Lord Karyl Vance on the situation during your stay. This is when he advised me on exclusive permission you received from Lord Brightflame to freely use the place for rituals, even against red priests’ will. During next meeting I begged the lord for another exclusion for myself, which he surprisingly granted without hesitation. It seems that even dedicated to Red God, Lord Justys stays quite broad-minded and tolerant of those praying to other gods, both Old and New.

Speaking of which, during the same meeting Commander Addam’s effort with training troops have been highly praised by our lord. He decided to use the good state of our levies that he asked him to scout more recruits to increase their numbers.

Screenshot 79.png

Though you might already heard of it, Lord Justys joined the Lord Medgar’s council, being appointed as his new spymaster. But I find it strange that you didn’t mention that Lord Justys already was appointed in the council before as a chancellor, right after taking over Harrenhal. This time it was Commander Addam who spoke with me honestly, explaining me whole situation. I can understand that reasons are not clear enough to leave the comment here, but nevertheless this should be put in the chronicle records.

Screenshot 70.png

Like I mentioned before, I was looking through the documents you left, and I noticed more shortcomings in the events that happened in Westeros, mostly after Lady Lothston’s trial. For instance, there are no mentions of later trial by combat of Prince Maekar in 209 AC, where I heard Lord Justys intervened to the king in his favor, even planned on rescuing him from prison. In the end it was successful for the prince’s champion, proving Maekar’s innocence, nevertheless Lord Brightflame’s engagement in the event, at least the official one, should be noted properly.

Screenshot 69.png

Also there are no mentions of king Daeron’s attempts to restore order in the Night’s Watch, whether they ended quickly thanks to Lord Rodwell Stark, or not.

But I suppose the greatest news was that Lord Arion Baratheon got influenced by the red priests who arrived to the Storm’s End – to the point he brought the faith of R’hllor as his own, becoming brother in faith with Justys. From what I know, Garryros was declared a High Priest, standing now as an autonomous authority for the Westerosi followers of the Red God. Also, the black stag in red flaming heart was recently seen on Arion’s banners, when he marched north with some troops to support Daeron II during the incident with the Night’s Watch.

This situation turned the tables on our last council meeting, as Lord Justys informed us on forming alliance with Lord Arion, confirmed by betrothing his younger son Rhaenar with Baratheon’s granddaughter, Carolei, daughter of Ser Davos. Due to this previous engagement with Rhaenys Longwaters was put in question, as it was not officially declined. But even if, Ser Jon Longwaters already knows and recently he gave Justys a cold shoulder during official meeting.

Screenshot 78.png

There was also inconsistency in plots foreseen by Lord Justys in his dreams. While mentioning Bloodraven’s kill attempt, you omitted the fact that months after convincing Ser Brynden, spies reported on Captain Aegor Bittersteel planning to repay him, scheming to kill his brother in King’s Landing. This was a dangerous situation, as if Master of Whisperers were assassinated in Red Keep, then who would guarantee king’s safety from Blackfyre’s plots.

I have already made proper corrections and filled the missing documents, so now your work should be consistent.

Of other things you forgot to mention was last report on tutorage. I know you have dutifully served as teacher to all children of the lord, as well as those of other courtiers. I must agree that the progress in studies in case of Aerys and Rhaenar is astonishing, they were perfectly responding to any hard tasks I gave them to check their current level. I would dare to say they are small geniuses, who can one day outsmart their pretty talented father.

Screenshot 72.png

I must also praise younger Gargon. While still a small child he seems to have sharp wits, not like his older brothers but also very promising.

Quite the opposite is the case of Viserion. I am not quite sure if this was caused by being born as second twin, as I know they often come out weaker, but dull wits does not leave hopes on his further education. What I’m also worried about are the seizures he often gets during lessons, as well as tendency to cruelty when he caught and tortured some small bug.

Larra and Viserra are not worrisome, maybe except the short temper younger one was showing, but diligence in assigned tasks is quite compensating it. Too bad that Larra is quite distrustful of people, she didn’t give me any chance to get to know her better. Jaenara, though she seemed to listen my teachings well, is still a mystery to me.

This will not be of my concern anymore, however, as Lord Medgar, offering Justys a place in the council, also suggested to take older children to his court in Riverrun, where they would be assigned new wardens. For now only Gargon and Lucerys stay in Harrenhal with their mothers. Children are now packing their stuff and will take carriage tomorrow morning. Too bad I will not be able to know them better, however I am sure they will be properly taken care of.

From recent news, I have to sadly inform you about death of Commander Myles caused by sickness, probably a flu. His brother Ser Allard was nominated to take over his duties in Tower of Dread, however children of Ser Myles and his other dead brother stayed in the castle.

Screenshot 68.png

Other interesting going-on was a visit of Prince Rhaegel in Harrenhal, right before Lord Justys left to Riverrun. Like you noted, he was eating poorly since the trial. Though not showing signs of malnourishment, still this fat, ailing prince noticed it and suggested him to start to eat more. His intervention, while not expected, actually helped and now Lord Justys seemed to eat normal portions during meals.

Screenshot 75.png
Screenshot 76.png

For now, most of the courtiers returned to normal life, I suppose. While of course, everyone now are more restrained in front of Lord Justys, I cannot say we can see anything to worry about.

Please stay safe and send my regards to other maesters in Citadel.

Maester Joron, Harrenhal

Side note - I added "A Bigger Interface" mod to the list, as I just found it in Steam Workshop having an AGOT sub-mod. You will see changes from Chapter 7 onward.

Chapter 5

Blackfyres (211 AC)

The door opened wide and Maester Joron entered the empty room, with a wide solid table in the middle and chairs around it. He closed the door with haste, trying to catch his breath and gather thoughts. He came here as soon as he heard from the lord, as he had to quickly prepare other points to discuss on current meeting, sort the documents and letters to show, or check if all members have place to seat. Ever since Lord Justys dictated to make all decisions personally, their council meetings usually remind of small briefing, where everyone reports their tasks... to be sent back to their duties.

But today’s topic was greater than ever, so Lord Brightflame sent orders to everyone to assemble, as soon as possible. Soon Justys himself joined his maester in meeting place, his long, platinum hair, with small strings of silver lining, combed to fall behind his shoulders.

– My lord, the room is ready, we are now only awaiting other advisors to join.

Lord Justys didn’t say anything, sitting in his place and starting to read documents. His violet eyes followed the text with no sign of emotions. Of course, he already heard the news, the letters here were only to present detailed summary of our current situation.

Lord Karyl Vance, castellan, came not long after. Bowing head to his liege, he sat next to him to check the documents already put out by Justys. He, on the other hand, could be easily seen to worry of the events.

– Lord Brightflame, are we certain?
– Yes, Karyl, this letter leaves no doubts, so as the news from Essos. We still have no exact date, but this was to be expected anyway.
– I know, but for so many years we heard rumours on gathering mercenaries, collecting money to hire ships...
– But now is an opportunity better than ever! They fought the king accused of bastardry and still lost terribly, but now... Now we speak of the “bastard’s son”, who they presume should have lower ground. And we both know they might not be mistaken, with many lords discontent of previous rule...

Ser Waltyr entered the room as well, Joron greeted him and joined the conversation.

– Ser Waltyr, when did your news arrive?
– The words come from two weeks back, with two days before I got the raven from King’s Landing.
– And was this from my brother’s people?
– Yes, so the king should know it as well.

Lord Arlan Lolliston, Mayor Alaric and the commanders have arrived already, so Lord Justys stood up, welcoming everyone and apologizing for the short notice. Then he asked Maester Joron to inform others on the latest urgent information.

– As you know, with death of King Daeron II, his son Baelor was recently crowned in capital by High Septon XX. Lord Justys recently returned from his coronation ceremony.

Screenshot 81.png

– Such things were always an opportunity to cause turmoil within the realms and so this is what we were assured of in his case. Two weeks ago, one of local sailors in Myr boasted about profitable contract their captain agreed on with the Golden Company, who wants their ships to take them to Westeros.

All started to watch others nervously, knowing what Joron wants to say.

– The news come from the informer of Lord Bloodraven, who has probably informed king Baelor already. With certainty, we can expect another Blackfyre pretender to attack. What we don’t know is whether they arrive tomorrow of within couple weeks. But if you still consider this just rumors...

He looked at Justys, who raised his head to continue.

– This would be unconfirmed gossip, if I haven’t received this letter I hold in my hand. This is the letter directly from Daenerys Blackfyre, who as you may not be aware married her brother Daemon years before. She asks us to stop supporting the false kings and, in the name of our family ties, join their cause instead. Or at least to stay neutral when they will claim their rights again.

Lord Arlan murmured leaning to Ser Addam, who has stood up now to speak.

– My lord, I will start preparations for the upcoming conflict, since this is something we cannot ignore. However, do you really consider to take side with these traitors? I am fully aware of your family relations, but after previous rebellion, standing against the king would be madness...
– You are right, Ser Addam, thank you for your opinion. I won’t make any rash decision, but it’s still up to me to take the next step.
– Yes, lord.

Addam sat down on his chair.

– Dear Sers, our lord shall give us his reply in few days, in the mean time I expect to get more information as to when the ships leave port in Myr. Please take your preparations, Ser Addam should take care of our garrison and Mayor Alaric has already started setting funds for new equipment. Lord Karyl, please check if we need more supplies, while Lord Arlan may focus on reassuring our alliances. Unless you have further questions, I’d like to ask mayor to provide us with report in current financial conditions, to...

The meeting took another hour before everyone moved out of the room to complete their tasks. Lord Justys stayed until the end and so did Tristana, who joined the meeting later, but she already had most of the information before. Now she came closer, behind lord’s chair, and started to stroke his head.

– Do you regret not staying with them on exile? I know you were pretty close with Dany...
– What happened before was meant to be like this, without it I would probably never meet you in Volantis, besides... – he looked at his right arm – ...staying in Tyrosh with only one hand would not come in handy.

He laughed softly for a brief moment, while she stopped talking and continued stroking his hair. But her face was gloomy, not calmed with his reply. Tristana never doubted his unconditional feeling towards her, but she was always envious of that Blackfyre b***h, who he was fond of earlier. Thankfully Daenerys is already married with her brother, with abominations of her own already, so there shouldn’t be anything with worry, should be?

They stayed like this for a while, when Triss finally stopped playing and bowed to her lord before leaving the room. Justys, still sitting in his chair, tried to gather his thoughts. Then he finally stood up and moved to the door. He put his hand in the pocket, where he hid letter from Lady Blackfyre.

Whatever happens, my dear niece, whatever happens...

------------
I decided to do one chapter different than letter format, please share your thoughts, if you want to see more of these.

Enjoying the read thus far. I'm not entirely sure when your gameplay diverged with the original timeline. Did the OG Brightflame Aerion came to exist in this timeline, or is Justys him but an alternate universe variant (been watching too much Loki recently :p).

One of the greatest testaments to your skill as a writer is when a non GOT reader or viewer with no idea of the idea thoroughly enjoys you work. Keep up the good work.
The book series is incredible, although I might be a bit biased as a fan. Perhaps give it a read one of these days. I'd steer clear of the show however, as the sharp decline in latter seasons makes watching the early ones a bit of a pain, knowing it'll all end in disaster at the writing room down the line.

I should think of putting Q&A - especially that I expected the exact below questions :D

EDIT: Okay, created one, I'm putting it to my first post.

Thanks, but actually I'm exactly at similar point!

I never read books! and from the TV series I watched only first 2 seasons. Rest of my knowledge is this mod, A World of Ice and Fire (in my native lang, though) and the internet Wikis :p

Hi, thanks, I'm happy you like it!

Basically the game starts in 1st day of First Moon, 200 AC - but actual PoD is 20 years earlier when Aegon IV had one more Great Bastard with Serenei of Lys (so, older brother of Shiera Seastar). I haven't changed much with my submod, so all characters born before that date are here.

Justys and Aerion are only common in their nicknames - even it's origin is somewhat different, because Aerion got called because of his beauty, while Justys because of his wits. But since Aerion was born according to AGOT mod in 192 AC, he started in-game as a 8 year old boy. This allowed to raise him completely different from what he was according to books... definitely for the better ;)

I'm sure I mentioned it already in one of the chapters, but Aerion became a Dragon Rider, mounting Heartfyre. He is quite kind and loving guy, definitelly a pearl among Maekar's sons. He is married with Elinor Reyne and have two children, a son and a daughter (and I promise that both will appear later ;)).
In comparison to his brothers:
- Daeron... well... I ensured him by editing my first save to betroth and marry Kiera of Tyrosh, being her first husband... but Daeron still lives, so this drunkard lives with his wife and two daughters unhappily ever after...
- a definitely-not-maester Aemon became the great warrior, one of the best in country, married Leyla Plumm (I admit, I arranged it myself by editing), with a son and daughter;
- Aegon 'the Unlikely' is a kind but very decent knight, married to his niece Vaella (Daeron's daughter, arranged by the game), she's too young so still no offspring;
And their sister Daella was married by me at the game's start to Prince Valarr (as replacement for Kiera), they got married and got three children, one stillborn.

-----

And since we're at it, one more answer to question not asked, but definitely thought by some...

I won't deny that I edit save files sometimes. I am completely honest here, but I don't do it to ensure my win. Mostly I'm checking how the game goes, and try to fix some strange events, or rename other characters outside my dynasty. The last one was the main reason why I started my adventure with mods - I wanted to correct
other dynasties' children names (before there was Steam Workshop with mods allowing this).

Any time there is something I edited, I will leave this information below Chapter, or somehow else, so you will know it.

To present some other examples:

1) Mod is generating too many Ruin male characters and Brindlemen women, who then generates lot of "brindled" bastards, or worse - legal offspring!!! Heck, even those Ruin guys often have the children of their own, despite their trait forbidding them to marry and breed...

2) Justys and his women got "enhanced" health and fertility at the game's beginning, to ensure proper birth rate and prevent constant death of children because of "The curse of Harrenhal" modifier (highly reducing both for anyone born in Harrenhal's dynasty).
Before this happened, at my first run, I quickly ended the game with 2 sillborns, and 3 other children dying early - one inherited to rule only for 3 more years. Then the second run after 2 years, because I killed Justys hatching an egg - and they didn't get any children.

3) For my dynasty, I interfered only once for my own benefit - by making Vaesys bearing twins, as there was supposed to be one child only. Gender was chosen randomly.

4) Other change that influenced my story was when I discovered that Brandon Stark, betrothed to my daughter, was actually renamed by mod from Jonnel like this:
Code:
bn="Jonnel" #this is a birth name, as for every character
name="Brandon" #this is the name of those, who had it changed via decision/event
Such code proved game's intervention, because it's the same as with names of Catholic popes in vanilla. Because of this I turned him back to original name, as I liked it much better (and renamed his older brother from Donnel to Rodrik, because he was to marry a granddaughter of Donnel Arryn and their child - in one of my longer runs - got named Donnel as well!!! So let's their children have the name, but not him...)
Other children renamed by me recently were Lannister's sons (father's name again, and so they start with 'T') and Baratheons latest offspring.
