My steam achievements don't seem to be working. Do I need to do anything else apart from enabling the ironman mode for the achievements to work?

Are you in the tutorial? I do not remember, but it's possible that it doesn't work there.
For me sometimes I need to exit the game, reenter and check achievement in game and then they appear. You can check if this also the case for you.
It's on the top right of the screen in one of the menus. I think it is the one where you go to quit the game from as well the furthest to the right (unfortunately not currently on the pc). There you can check all achievement status. Try checking right after reloading.

Sometimes it is not even necessary do reload the game. Simply checking the achievements in-game twice usually does the trick.

Reloading or opening the achievement menu multiple times can help, but some achievements are also just plain broken.

No, I don't think so. The achievement are not dependent on difficulty. At the moment you have zero achievements from your run? Try creating a new ironman game and getting a very easy achievement like "render onto Ceasar" so conquer a city. Just to check if somehow your save game is corrupted or it is a general problem. Are you using any mods? Some mods count against achievements.
