Hello everybody!

I've been lurking on these forums for several years, and have been a voracious reader of AARs. I've finally cracked and decided to create an AAR of my own. I've chosen to play the old house of Bamburgh, in part because who doesn't love them, and in part because that borderer culture will be good fit for long-standing blood feuds and petty grievances, which imo make for the most interesting roleplay. Anyway, before I begin the AAR itself, I just want to lay out a few rules that I will be following for myself, in order to make this a more challenging experience.

1 - No Save-Scumming. This game is being played on ironman mode. If i somehow manage to screw up a century of progress with one misclick - well, that's the way the world runs too, no?

2 - Stay in Role. Very often this game throws you opportunities that you can deal with by acting in a completely crazy way. Killing your kids, for example. Even murdering your wife, if you aren't a very particular sort of character. Well, in this game I'm going to play as in character as possible. Some people genuinely will be malevolent monsters, but you're not going to see me just killing everyone with happy abandon. Same goes for wars. Sometimes I might fight a war over something trivial because I am wrathful and a ruler offended me, other times I will not fight a war despite having a claim because I am best friends with the lord in question.

3 - Me and my Heirs Fight. Unless I'm craven or especially weak, you can expect to see me or my kids at the head of my army. My kids will also be knights, despite the danger that entails - after all, if I am to lead the wild northern folk in their struggles to keep the Anglo-Saxon culture alive, how can I cower behind my walls without fighting? My children and I will earn our spurs.

4 - No Fabricating Claims. I've always found the "fabricate claims" capability to be ridiculously OP, and it takes any challenge out of the game for me. So I will not be using it. Claims will need to be inherited or otherwise strenuously obtained.

Anyway, I hope to get started on this tale soon! Get strapped for a tale of violence, of feud, of vengeance and of bloodshed. This is the story of the House of Bamburgh.

Chapter 1: Scores to Settle

I am Osulf, son of Eadulf, son of Uhtred the Bold of the House of Bamburgh. For centuries, my kin had been the most powerful clan in all Northumbria, first as Kings of Bernicia and Northumbria and later as high-reeves of Bamburgh. Now, however, dark days and calamity have befallen us, and we find ourselves in a desperate struggle to retain our old way of life. Our present troubles have their roots in the life of my illustrious grandfather, Uhtred the Bold. In recognition of my grandfather's mighty and heroic deeds against the Scots, King Aethelred appointed him Earl of all Northumbria. This, however, angered the Anglo-Norse population of Eoferwic, and they seethed at the thought that a native son of Britain should rule over them.

Their opportunity to strike at my noble family came in that terrible year of 1016, when Cnut the Great, Cnut the Terrible, Cnut the Conqueror took to his longships and assailed our King Aethelred. And while men now find it fashionable to mock him and call him Unraed, the late King Aethelred had been good to our clan, God rest his soul, and for this we stood by his side and fought for him against the Danish invader. Even after King Aethelred died in London we stood by his brave and noble son, King Edmund Ironsides, who so confounded the Danish invader that they were forced to assassinate him as he relieved himself in the privy, like the cowardly dogs that they were.

A similar fate awaited my illustrious grandfather for the crime of having stood by the rightful King of England. For while the House of Bamburgh stood by their king, the treacherous Danes who have populated Eoferwic since the days of the Great Heathen Army did not, and they turned to their kinsman Cnut and promised him the loyalty of all the north, if only he would rid them of their native overlord, my most noble grandfather. And so it was on that fateful day in 1016, that my grandfather made his way south to parlay with the foreign invader. Suddenly a party of the invader's troops, led by Thorbrand the Hold (a prominent man of Eoferwic), sprang out of the woods and slew all his party. My grandfather fought like a lion, but alas, such are the times we live in that a pack of cowardly dogs can slay even the noblest king of the beasts. And so it happened that the men of Eoferwic made their pact with the invader and we, the rightful overlords of Bamburgh, were left to rule over the northern reaches of England - Lothian, Bamburgh, Westmoreland, and Cumberland.

Uhtred the Bold left behind him a brother, Eadulf Cudel; and three sons: Ealdred, Eadulf (my esteemed father, rest his soul), and Gospatric. Since the three sons were not of sufficient age to govern our family's lands, that burden fell to Eadulf Cudel, a timid and unworthy man. Out of cowardice, he ceded our lands in Lothian - held by our family since the days of Ida 500 years ago - to the Scots, and it was indeed a blessing to our house when he finally expired in the early 1020s.

Eadulf Cudel was succeeded by Earl Uhtred's son, my uncle Ealdred. Ealdred was a man of stouter heart than Eadulf Cudel, and he avenged my grandfather's blood by slaying his murderer, Thorbrand the Hold. Alas and alack, the Earl Ealdred was insufficiently zealous in his vengeance, and he left Thorbrand's son Carl alive. For several years a vicious feud of raid and counter-raid raged between Eadulf and Carl, with Ealdred supported by the Anglo-Saxons of Northumbria and Carl supported by the Danes in York. In 1038, Carl proposed that the nobles of Northumbria and York agree to a perpetual peace between themselves, and he invited my uncle Ealdred to join him on a pilgrimage to Rome to solidify the peace between them. Unfortunately, my uncle trusted that viper, and once in the forest, Carl treacherously turned upon my uncle and slew him.

Following Ealdred's murder, my father Eadulf succeeded him as Earl of Northumbria. He performed mighty deeds against the Scots and the Galwegians, and he lay waste to the lands of England's enemies to the north. In a just world, the crown would have favored him and showered him with glory for the deeds he had done, but instead, the spawn of the invader, Harthacnut, betrayed my father and delivered him into the hands of his enemies. This mortal enemy, this terrible foe, was the mighty Siward, another Scandinavian who had come over to our England in the days of Cnut. This Siward ambushed and slew my father, God rest his soul, and the treacherous King Harthacnut gave Siward overlordship over both Eoferwic and Northumbria, which he wielded to the end of his days.

In truth, had I been in my uncle Gospatric's place I would have continued the fight, but Gospatric accepted that Siward was too mighty and our family was to weak, and so he submitted to Siward's rule. And as difficult as it is for me to utter these words about my father's killer, Earl Siward's rule was good for Northumbria. He shattered the power of the Scots and kept our frontiers safe. He made sure to keep both my house and the men of Eoferwic happy - in the case of our house he gave my uncle Gospatric effective control over Northumbria, and in the case of the men of Eoferwic he gave them security and kept their taxes low.
All that changed in 1055, when Earl Siward died of dysentery. Lord be praised, the foe of my house did not obtain the honorable death on the battlefield, but instead died of dysentery in painful indignity, lowing like a cow in childbirth as his innards spilled out in a bloody flux.

With Earl Siward dead, the question arose as to who King Edward would appoint to replace him. Siward left a young son, Waltheof, who was insufficiently mature to take the helm in as dangerous a region as Northumbria, and so he was passed over by Edward, although the King granted him the Earldom of Northamptonshire as compensation. We had high hopes of our family being restored to its rightful place at the head of Northumbrian society, but the king's advisor and brother-in-law, the damnable Harold Godwinson, saw an opportunity to further his family's interests. Instead of appointing my uncle Gospatric to his rightful position as earl, Harold sent his idiot brother Tostig to rule over us.

That Tostig Godwinson was a unique species of idiot can be gleaned from the fact that he managed to unite both Northumbria and Eoferwic in opposition to his rule. He managed to lose Cumberland to the Scots, which infuriated both my family, who held those lands, and the Bishop of Durham, whose lands were now open to Scottish raiders, and he levied oppressive taxes. When my uncle Gospatric tried to rally the men of Northumbria to protest against Tostig's monstrosities in 1065, Tostig and his sister Edith (wife of our late King Edward) had Gospatric and two close kinsmen murdered in the royal palace!

When news of this outrage reached me in Bernicia, I gathered my kin and we marched on Eoferwic. We joined forces with the disgruntled Danes and together we slew Tostig's men-at-arms, down to the last man. We would have slain that wicked Earl himself, had he not been down south with the king at that time. Our uprising was a complete success, and we completely cleared Northumbria and Eoferwic of those southern interlopers in short order. Tostig himself was forced to flee England after his brother Harold refused to go to war with us to restore Tostig to his earldom. The question then arose as to who would be the new earl. My men, of course, wished me to be Earl of Northumbria, but the men of Eoferwic refused to hear of it. They, in turn, tried to suggest Waltheof, son of Siward (who had by now grown up) as earl, but my men justifiably refused to serve under the kin of the man who had murdered my father. Thus, we found ourselves at an impasse. We needed a compromise candidate.

Eventually, we settled on an appropriate candidate - Morcar, the younger brother of Duke Eadwine of Mercia. He is a brave and ambitious warrior, and we agreed to give him the position of Duke of Northumbria, provided that he leave the House of Bamburgh in charge of our ancestral lands in Bernicia and Westmoreland (and God willing Cumberland when we recapture it from the Scots). King Edward was greatly distressed by our demand that Morcar be installed as our new earl, but without the support of his nobles to put down our uprising, he was forced to agree. A few weeks later the king fell ill, and before long he was gone, dead, many said, of a broken heart.

And so we find ourselves in the position we are in today. Three mighty rulers contend for the throne in England. To the south, Harold Godwinson has been elected by the witan and sits on the throne in Winchester, while across the sea, both Duke William of Normandy and King Harald Hardrada of Norway prepare to invade. Word is that the despicable Tostig Godwinson accompanies Harald Hardrada's host, which makes it critical to both my house and my lord Duke Morcar that the Norwegians are defeated. As far as the conflict between King Harold and Duke William, we have little vested interest, although Duke Morcar's sister is married to King Harold. Personally, I would like to see young Edgar Aetheling, grandson of Edmund Ironsides and the last surviving male of the House of Wessex, become king when he comes of age, but I dare not voice such treason until the time is right.

I shall lead my people through this time of violence and tribulation. I shall uphold our local Anglo-Saxon culture in the face of all invaders. And most importantly, I shall avenge the blood of my kin. Not a soul from the families of Waltheof Siwardson and Tostig Godwinson shall escape the bloody vengeance of the House of Bamburgh!

@m0xxY I didn't know, but that one looks fascinating

I imagine our two games will diverge pretty quickly, though, so there should be room for two Bernicia playthroughs. From a quick glance it looks like our writing and play styles are very different, so there should be some novelty in this thread

Edit: I just realized that he literally just ended his campaign, so there *certainly* should be room for another one.

Chapter 2: Kith and Kin

The House of Bamburgh is a dynasty that might seem obscure to outsiders, but in reality, we dominate regional politics, both on the English and the Scottish sides of the border, and are closely connected to the most prominent Scottish families through female branches of our dynasty. I, as the head of our house, am Earl of Bernicia and Westmoreland, and serve Duke Morcar as his steward. I am married to Sifflaed, the daughter of one of the most powerful vassals of Earl Eadwine of Mercia: Wulfstan, Earl of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and Gloucestershire; and chancellor to Duke Eadwine. When we get together we like to spend many an hour in deep discussion, comparing notes on poisons and counter-espionage systems. Earl Wulfstan is an affable man of incredible learning and culture, and he can always be counted upon to recall some obscure text and bring it to bear on whatever the present trouble is.

My next closest relative is my brother and knight, Halden. The two of us are on very good terms, and he has fought bravely at my side in many a fight, including the most recent hostilities against Tostig's garrison in Eoferwic. Halden, like me, holds a bitter grudge against the foes of my family, but he also possesses an incredible ability to remain calm and collected through even the greatest crises, and he has a sense of rightness and justness that makes him probably the most popular man in my lands. He is also quite good with money, and serves me as my steward.

I have two cousins of mine that serve on my council, and a third cousin who i most dearly wish would go back over the border to live with the rest of her rotten family in Scotland. We'll start with her.

My uncle Ealdred was survived by only a single daughter, Aeldgyth. She wishes to serve on my council as my spymaster, but quite frankly I refuse to have her at my side. She is an incredibly frightening woman - I have on occasion chanced upon her while she was "interrogating" outlaws, and even my callous heart shuddered at the horrific screams coming from her victims. There can be no question that she delights in inflicting agony on others - the scars on the faces of her serving women are ample testament to that. But like all bullies, she finds it preferable to give than to receive, and she fled to my court as a result of the horrific cruelty of her husband, Ligulf of Durham; along with her two rotten sons, Uhtred and Morcar. I guess I am stuck with them until something sends them back to Scotland and away from me. In the meantime, I shall have to keep a close watch on these no good relatives of mine.

The cousins I actually like are the two sons of my late aunt Aelfgifu, Siward and Ealdred. Both of them are temperate and competent at their tasks, and both have served me loyally in the past. Siward, the elder, serves as my chancellor, and truly is a loyal servant. He is chaste and content with his lot in life, and his pleasant demeanor makes him a decent chancellor for my needs.

His younger brother, Ealdred, is more martial, as befits our family's current position. He too, is hardworking and temperate, but has a harsher edge to him. As the foremost fighter in my lands, he serves as my marshal, and diligently drills our levies and constantly looks for ways to maximize our strength.

Ealdred.png

The remainder of my family lives across the border in Scotland. Most of them are not of my house - merely cousins by way of my aunt. There are the Dunbars, who hold the Duchy of Lothian, as well as the Earldom of Cumberland from the Duke of Strathclyde. There are the Dunkelds, who at present hold the throne of Scotland, although they refuse to acknowledge us as relatives at all. And finally, there is my cousin Eadulf of Bamburgh, the son of my late Earl Gospatric (who was slain by Tostig and his sister in 1064), who holds the Earldoms of Teviotdale and Lanarkshire from my other cousin, Duke Gospatric of Lothian.

Having concluded the list of my kin, I now move on to the remaining non-family members of my court: my suffragan bishop, Sigeric; and my spymaster, a lowborn woman by the name of Aelfswith. Sigeric the Honest, as he is known, is a true man of spirit. He is the bravest man in all our lands, and like my brother Halden has that virtue of stoic calmness in the face of adversity.

If Halden is the most popular official in my lands and Sigeric the most brave, then I would have to say about Aelfswith that she is the strangest. A peculiar and disagreeable woman, she has never been observed to give in during an argument nor does she apparently do any work, and yet when the time comes for our council meetings she displays an incredible amount of knowledge of the goings on in every corner of the Duchy of Northumbria. Like a said, she is an odd woman, and nobody really knows how she is so effective at her job.

This then, is my family and court. For better or for worse, we face the coming storm - together.

Oh yessssss…

As someone who has been trying to marshal together a story on Eadgar AElthing and the restoration of England’s rightful ruling dynasty for sometime now (blame work and grad school for this being in the distant future), I am so happy to see someone even more learned in 11th Century English history going ahead with a tale like this! This is the moment where the destiny of Western Europe hung in the balance - this is the time when the fate of a dozen nations was decided - the end of the Vikings, the birth of the modern realms of England and Scotland, the many centuries to come of Anglo-French conflict, all was to come of 1066, but it could have easily been so very different…

Lead on, bard, and let thy hwaet fill the halls…

Heck just this morning I was thinking of all the things that really need to be adjusted to make a more accurate “The Fate of England” scenario and came up with a fairly extensive list:
  • Change title localization for Anglo-Saxon culture so the county tier is “Shire-reeve” and the duchy tier is “earl” or even more properly “ealdorman.”
  • Make Eadgar of Wessex the house head of Wessex dynasty, because right now, that’s Margaret of Wessex and when she marries matrilineally, the dynasty descent inevitably goes down her line.
  • On the subject of Margaret, why the heck is she hard-coded as a cynical atheist? This is Saint Margaret of Scotland we’re talking about!
  • The line of succession from Edward the Confessor’s sister Godgifu is completely messed up - the figure who the game records as Raoul de Vexin-Amiens is, while the name is technically correct, far better known as Ralph the Timid, Earl of Hereford, and while it is unclear if his son Harold (who the game has as a courtier in Devon) inherited the titles, he is still a far more historical candidate to do so than the ahistorical Wulfstan the game has in the 1066 start date, to say nothing of the fact that he would have been a direct vassal of King Harold in that position, and also have a (weak) claim to the English throne through his grandmother.
  • I find it inconceivable that Eadgar and his two sisters, having spent their early childhood in Kiev and with Princess Agatha as their mother, do not know how to speak East Slavic.
  • King Harald Hardrada’s claim really should be of the unpressed variety since it was a heck of a game of whisper down the lane that he justified it (Harthacnut and Magnus of Norway agreed to be each other’s heirs prior to Harthacnut going off to take England from his half-brother, Magnus should have gained England then on Harthacnut’s death and he gained it on Magnus’s death).
  • Queen Ingebjørg of Scotland is possibly dead by 1066 and King Malcolm III is an available widower. It is unclear though from the little surviving sources. Having her be dead and Malcolm and Margaret (or some other party) able to marry would make things even more interesting in England.
  • And for heaven’s sake, can we stop changing the appearances of the English dukes and counts every patch?

Edit (June 5, 2022): And any chance we can also get St. Edward’s Crown added as a option to wear like the Reichskrone, St. Stephen’s Crown, or the Crown of Constantine?

Yes, the House of Bamburgh has a lot of reasons to be annoyed.

I wonder who they will side with in the battle for control of England between the Anglo-Saxons, Norway, and Normandy?

Haha yes! I love this period so much. As an aside, if you specifically want to know more about this lawless northern region, I'd strongly recommend The Norman Conquest of the North by William Kappelle.

Change title localization for Anglo-Saxon culture so the county tier is “Shire-reeve” and the duchy tier is “earl” or even more properly “ealdorman.”

Oh for sure. Ealdorman did fall out around Cnut's time, though, and certainly doesn't last in a meaningful sense past the Norman Conquest. Earl is the way to go for a duchy tier title. If you go back to the first chapter you'll see that I slipped up often and referred to the earldom of Northumbria multiple times, since my frame of reference was the actual history more than the game.

And I certainly agree with all your other points. I would add that Normandy is a mess as well with regards to the genealogies.

Yes, the House of Bamburgh has a lot of reasons to be annoyed.

I wonder who they will side with in the battle for control of England between the Anglo-Saxons, Norway, and Normandy?

Oh, it was a massive boon to my role playing that Northumbria ended up with so many callous, vengeful, and wrathful candidates!

Right now Osulf has beef with all the candidates. Harald Hardrada is obviously accompanied by Tostig Godwinson, who is a mortal foe of the House of Bamburgh. Hardrada was also historically supported by many of the Danes of York, whom Osulf despises. Meanwhile, Harold Godwinson is the one who put Tostig in to begin with, plus his sister Edith assassinated Uncle Gospatric, so we don't love him either (as a historical note, the north was not very keen on Harold's accession to the throne). And then there's William. Right now he seems the least threat, insofar as his accession to the throne will not affect the internal affairs of the north, but what will his conquest mean for the Anglo-Saxon way of life so valued in the north?

but what will his conquest mean for the Anglo-Saxon way of life so valued in the north?
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t - Harald of Norway or Sweyn of Denmark would almost certainly have turned the Scandinavianization of the North up to eleven in their own way, even if it didn’t mean killing most of the inhabitants (which I should add was something that was not expected from William at all).

Retreating might prove prudent, but it might harm morale. We'll see.

Well, I suppose that there is a fourth option - declare independence. For that matter, there's also a fifth option - find another Anglo-Saxon candidate and convince him to attempt to take the throne with your support.

Thus far the playthrough has gone comically wrong, which I've compounded by a few deliberate missteps that made sense story-wise.

But I'm still alive lol - barely

Yeah I was going to say that the most recent update has Harold going south most of the time, defeating William, and letting Harald run wild across the north until Harold finally marches up there.

It’s a good strategy tbh, I haven’t seen Harold lose the throne in four games now. Although the fact that he is able to get an alliance with King Sweyn of Denmark is definitely tipping the scales in a somewhat ahistorical way.
