Sounds like a nice boom - we need an All Big Guns space battleship!
Since the time we built the Attitudes, we've gained one level each of Engine tech, Power Plant tech, Beam Fire Control tech, and Capacitor Recharge Rate tech; and two levels of Laser tech. The Capacitor Recharge Rate 6 tech was critical.

So I was planning to do a direct upgrade of the Attitudes (the same number of more modern engines, the same number and caliber of more modern Lasers, etc) which will leave their weight of fire unchanged but double their rate of fire from one broadside per ten seconds to one broadside per five seconds.

Then I would also design a Battleship (with 25 cm guns instead of the Attitude's 15 cm guns) and that Fast PD Escort with the humungous spinal-mounted Laser.

Nice ideas, but the battleship should obviously be our TOP priority! ;)

Same armor, same sensors, same number and caliber of guns, but 1,680 kps faster, 11 billion km longer cruising range, with guns that fire twice as often and with their firing range more than doubled.

Again the speed increases by 1,680 kps. Cruising range nearly doubles from 40 to 70 billion km. This version of the Animal class Light Cruiser trades one of its three Gauss PD turrets for a spinal mounted Laser that hits like a truck and has a range of 320,000 km (with a Fire Control to back that up).

Scientist Nuclearslurpee is now working on designs for the largest and nastiest Laser we can currently construct:

View attachment 889583

37 points of damage per hit, and its maximum range is actually so high that it gets clipped... the game imposes an absolute maximum of 1.5 million km on all Beam combat, and if it were legal to do so this puppy could hit things more than a light-second BEYOND that range.

This extra 350,000 km range at which it isn't permitted to shoot is actually useful, since the damage-per-hit is calculated based on the current range vs theoretical maximum range.

I'm thinking of using this monster laser as a spinal mount for our fast PD escorts.
It's funny how you think I'm developing this laser for you to put on your ships, and not for me to hoard all to myself and achieve world dominance.

We would be re-branding our Attitudes (formerly Battlecruisers) as Heavy Cruisers, and adopting this design as our Battlecruiser.

8,000 kps speed, 56 billion km cruising range, 320,000 km firing range, ten layers of armor, eight 25 cm Lasers in four twin turrets under two long-range Fire Controls, one Gauss PD turret with its own Fire Control, the usual sensor suite.

Comments?

Seems like a strong evolution of our ship design philosophy. Personally, I don't see why we would mount 10000 km/s tracking turrets on an 8000 km/s hull and pay for all that extra tonnage, but other than that it is a reasonably solid design.

I can make an alternative design with casemated (instead of Turreted) Lasers, for comparison.

Instead of eight turreted Lasers (16 damage each), it has eight casemated Lasers (16 damage each) plus that huge 37-damage spinal mount Laser.

Awesome! 37-boom!
Since it's a spinal mount, each ship is only able to carry one (plus eight more 25 cm Lasers).

This design is sort of like a 30,000-ton version of the A-10 Warthog.

Spinal lasers are always good to have, even though you can only mount one of them the added armor penetration means you get an outsized amount of extra internal damage relative to the weight of numbers. Plus a bit more long-range capability is nice to have.

Cries in Coward.
FTFY, either drive closer so Blue Emu can hit them with his space buster sword or hide out in the lab with me. :p

Using the carriers as slow, expensive and vulnerable gauss PD ships? It's a bold strategy I grant you that.

However it does sound better than just floating around doing nothing and that appears to be the only other option, so on that basis I vigorously support this plan. Better to burn out than to fade away and all that.

One of our yards is now retooling for Battle class Battlecruisers. Another yard is retooling for the Attitude => Attitude II Heavy Cruiser conversion.

The Battles? As soon as they are built, sure.

So can El Pip, if he wants to transfer to the shootin' Navy.
