The Roman Empire is burning; barbarians have taken Italy and shattered the entirety of the Western Roman Empire. The Eastern part of the Roman Empire can only watch in horror as the Western Empire is destroyed. Can it return "civilization" to the west, or will it fall just like the West? What new states will emerge from the fall of the Empire?

The Granting of Egypt 460 A.D
emperor-trajan-gettyimages-170916286.jpg

Citizen Boethius Apion steps forward and kneels to your Emperor; the Imperial Guard motions for Boethius to kneel. The Emperor gazes at citizen Apion, with appraising eyes before motioning for him to rise. Emperor Leon looks at this humble merchant, assessing him with cold eyes; he notices the grace of the merchant's rising, the wear and tears on his hands, and the bags under his eyes. After finalizing his assessment of his subject, the emperor speaks,

"Boethius Apion, though of humble birth, I am granting you the governorship of Egypt in recognition of your skills and, due to your loyalty to the Emperor, in the shipping of supplies."
The eyes of Boethius grow wide, and he quickly bows to his Emperor,
"I thank you, my Emperor; I have but one simple question, why myself?"
Sounds of blades being unsheathed could be heard throughout the throne room. Shouts of anger and calls of treason could be heard throughout the room. However, Emperor Leon would silence the outcry with a glare. Holding forth his hand, he would declare,
"Because, in my opinion, you are the best for the job."
Boethius was nervous, his eyes turning toward the senatorial class, seeing many of the senator's faces turning red. One senator, in particular, was staring daggers at Boethius. Boethius could tell something was going on within his head; calculating how quickly it would take him to head to Egypt, he bowed his head to Emperor Leon and thanked him for this position.

Later that Night
"Emperor Leon, I have a question about your choice of Governor of Egypt. Why did you pick such a man?" his wife would whisper to him during bed. The Emperor would give her a great big smile.
"My dear, it is simple, I need a loyal man to helm our breadbasket; who but a man who owes me everything is the most loyal." The Emperor would give a malicious grin.
"I care little about his competence; even if he is assassinated after entering Egypt, he will serve my purpose in opposing the senate." With that, they would go to bed, plots of intrigue on their mind." "He will never oppose me nor his family when they owe me everything".

The Arrival 460
Nile Art.jpg

Boethius took in a deep breath, smelling the ocean air. He would take a second breath attempting to contain his anxiety. With that, he would look towards the place where he would govern. He would turn his gaze toward the Nile, where he would see waves of wheat waving in the breeze. He would take another deep breath and move towards his private quarters to change into more native clothing. He would see what the area he would govern looked like from the view of a native.

He would arrive in the City of Alexandria, dressed in clothing not befitting a governor. Boethius would take his wife's hand and explore this city. They would explore the market, witnessing the wonders of all that the Mediterranean could offer. The smell of incense and diamonds glittering was a sight to behold to the once humble merchant. While Constantinople was beautiful, in his mind, Alexandria was a city of Wonders. That was when he would hear the scream; it was an ear-piercing scream, one that sounded like a scream of anguish. This scream would awaken Boethius from his wonderous view of the city; he would take a deep breath and rush towards the screaming.

Upon his arrival at its source, he would witness a terrible scene; he would witness Roman Men threatening an Egyptian Merchant; the merchant was dressed in rags, trying to stop the Romans from stealing his carts content. While Boethius was watching, the merchant would reach out to grab one of the Roman soldiers, and in a flash, blood was spewing out of his hand. While the merchant was crying on the ground, the Romans walked away laughing.
"Stupid Egyptian doesn't know that we rule this Empire and they are simply more tolerated slaves," sneered one Roman
"Agreed, declared the other; they should be happy we rule over them," laughed the other.
While they walked away, Boethius rushed towards the man, taking out his knife; he tore his clothes and fashioned a tourniquet to stop the bleeding man. Boethius would reach into his pockets and offer the merchant a choice.
"I can give you enough Gold to live off of for life, or I can offer you a job, one perhaps that will pay more gold than you know what to do with." "You do not have to answer now, only come to the Governor's office in 9 days and ask for a man known as Boethius, and tell your decision to him" With that, Boethius walked away and would beeline to his new residence, having determined what type of ruler he would be. The only question was, would he be able to pull it off.

The Reign of Boethius till 476
Egypt Rome Architecture.jpg

(To Shorten Write Ups till the actual start date)
Economic Reforms
Boethius would sigh, listening to the report he was receiving. His construction reforms worked but were not as effective as he would like. His focus on improving road quality increased the movement between cities and rural areas, but it was becoming more expensive. The importing of concrete was getting more expensive, and Emperor Leon was dead for not wholly supporting the ascension of Zenon; the Emperor was beginning to increase taxes on importing materials vital for constructing the roadways cheaper. His economic reforms focused on better transportation methods to increase his access to grain to pay tribute to the Emperor. Why could he not see this... A deeper sigh would come as he worried about the other obstacles this new Emperor would impose on his work.

Social Reforms
Boethius smiled at the merchant reading his decree; this merchant had supported his movement to decrease Roman Citizen Favoritism. While the merchant was missing a hand, he worked closely with him. After reading his decree, Boethius would smile and begin to dress in Egyptian Garb instead of his everyday governor's clothing. Some Roman Patricians in Alexandria were staring daggers at him over this decree, but Boethius did not care; the Emperor sent him to secure Egypt for the Empire, so he would. This new Emperor might oppose his decree, but Emperors came and went. To add to his decree he would change his last name to Khaba to spark further support from the Egyptians.

Family Life
Boethius holding his wife's hand tight would smile when his second son would come into this world. Boethius would kiss his wife, swoop him up in his arms, and laugh heartily; his family had a new member. He and his wife would smile and hold hands dreaming of what their son's life would take. His 1st born Son Phokas and 1st born Daughter Sophia would come to see their new younger brother. Both held him happily. Boethius would name his new son Markos.

With all these looks into what Boethius essentially did during his time pre-476. Time will only tell what the Fall of Rome will bring.

The new governor appears to be fair. The Romans might not like that.

Also, did the Emperor grant the family of Boethius Egypt in perpetuity? If so, why? If not, what will his family do when he attempts to revoke the province?
