Hello,

I need help with understanding how to fix my crashes that keep occurring when I try to make a new game or load a saved game at the "Loading Map Graphics". It continually does this no matter what. I have updated my graphics drivers and I have done refreshes, uninstalled the game, I have verified my game files for steam. Please help!

I have attached the error.log and system.log from the latest crash I just had.

Thanks!

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add stellaris.exe to the exceptions list of your antivirus app; ESPECIALLY if you have Windows Defender, add it to the Ransomware "Apps Allowed Through" list.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again.

If that doesn't help:
DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

Hey Andrew,

I did a complete wipe of folders/files other than taking the .txt file you told me to take out cause of custom empires etc. That file is on my desktop still. I verified the install and ran again on a basic pre-set empire and it still crashed at "Loading Map Graphics."

Attached the DxDiag as requested.

The logs folder did not have an "exceptions.log" file for me to attach.

Appreciate the help!

Right click on stellaris.exe , properties, compatibility. Tick "disable fullScreen optimisations" untick every other box in that dialog, Apply and exit.
Then in the launcher Game Settings menu, select fullScreen display mode, Vsync off, then cap the refresh rate at 60.

Is that any better?

Hey Andrew,

Disregard if you saw the other part about not finding the compability. I found it now. I changed the setting as you said about and ticked disable fullScreen optimisations. In the launcher game settings I also selected fullScreen, vsync off, then capped the refresh at 60.

Still crashes at "loading map graphics".

Although, for some reason when I select the refresh rate to 60hz and then the game crashes it resets the value to 144hz when I reload the launcher with the game. Also, for some reason when I look at the settings in the game my resolution goes to 3620x2036 but, my monitor is only set for 2560x1440. Not to sure why this is occurring.

Please advise!

Has this always happened with this game for you? or it was okay up to some point?

Our similar game Crusader Kings 2 is free to play on Steam now, does it have the same problem?

What if you make a new Windows user and log into Windows as that - does the game start then?

No this has not happened to me. It was strange because I was playing two games before hand one fresh and one loaded but, then I saved and came back like an hour or two later tried loading again and ever since this the game has continually crashed at that point whether I start new or load. I have never had this problem occur historically with my on this game and I have had Stellaris for many years now with the same computer and specs.

I mean, I could try a new Windows users and try but, I am curious on how that would really have anything to do with the game crashing when I don't have any other game I use on steam doing it and most other games I play at max settings with unlimited frame rate.

Downloaded and loaded CK2 and the game worked no problem just an FYI.

I also went and made a new Windows user and the same thing is happening even after I went and adjusted the fullscreen settings again.

Hmm. Can I get new copies of all those files from post #3 please.

What happens if you run stellaris.exe directly from File Explorer? Do you see any Windows error then?

We see some crashes in nVidia modules now, which were not there before . Let's clear those up:

- uninstall the nVidia driver and all other nVidia software
- reboot
- install March 2023 https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
- reboot again

How do I go about uninstalling the nvidia driver and all other nvidia software?

Okay well if its just "Uninstalling a program" when I try to remove the driver is doesn't do it or open a window to accept. So I am struggling to remove. Any guidance with steps?
Also, I have PC game pass and downloaded there and played through there and it seems like the game loads no problem. The issue is though Game Pass will only last so long vs Steam I own the game. So I don't know what the difference between the two would make it load vs not in stream

I'm asked hundreds of users to do this over the years .. no idea why it would not work on this machine !

All you should have to do is go into Control Panel, Programs, Uninstall a Program, and enter nVidia in Search there. Click on each line then on Uninstall/Change , up the top. Answer yes in the confirm dialog and you are done.

I have the same problem with the game. I tried all the sollutions but none of them work.
I did a clean install of the driver did not solve it. installed older driver 1 version back. still the same problem.
the next thing i tried was turn off all DLC.

i hope anyone can help me with this.

LOts of errors in that log.
lease do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere, and user empire designs.txt from /Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/ if you have made any custom empires or races.
- "uninstall" in Steam-Stellaris
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Stellaris AND Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris folders

- start the game with no mods active and test

That's the same error log, basically. Are you sure you followed every step I laid out, including making sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam Stellaris or Documents Stellaris locations, before installing again, AND disabling all mods if any?
