If it cuts the distance in half it may still be worth it - depending on what's there. If we explore it and there's something really valuable then the turnaround time matters a lot.
A lagrange point outside the moon system won't shorten the distance at all.

The lagrange point is at the same distance from the Sun as the planet is, but 60 degrees behind in its orbit.

... so the Sun, the planet and the lagrange point all form the verticies of an equilateral triangle. The distance from the lagrange point to the planet is not any shorter than the distance from the Sun to the planet. No distance is saved.

Well, crud.

So it's the L5 point, not the L1. Good to know.

That's what I thought when I saw that the moons were too small.

A large moon (planetary mass) would have generated an L5 point in its own orbit... very close to the planet.

Lagrange points are 1 orbital radius away from the planet. it wouldn't be closer. (EMUED!)

OTOH, a certain Space Master, could "discover" a large moon there... hint hint.

I have indeed been thinking about that.

If it shows off news aspects of the game - planet X, in this case - I guess a case can be made that it makes the game more interesting.

I for one am curious to know what this whole thing is about in the first place ;)

So...

How close are we to being ready to invade the Goons?

1) We have the recon capability we need. Very, very effective recon, in fact. Lots of Probes built and ready to use.
2) We have the Penetrator missiles designed and in production. Only 200-odd built so far, but this should be pretty quick.
3) Our current Fighter (X-Wing III-B) is more than sufficient for the assigned Fighter-strike role.
4) We have nine Lizard-II drop stations built, and nine Tugs to haul them. That's enough to lift two Divisions plus HQs and STO.
5) We need only one more Brigade of Space Marines (four more Battalions and a HQ) to complete our two Divisions of troops.
6) Iche Bins is ready to provide Fleet escort... just in case more Jerx showed up in Lalande 21185 at an awkward time.

Looks like we'll be ready in a couple of months, when we've stockpiled enough of the Penetrators?

Sounds great.
All it needs is a pretty name.

Operation Bucket Drop ?

If we increase the size of Minerva's third moon so that it is only slightly smaller than Earth, that creates a stable lagrange position in its own orbit around Minerva where a Gate Constructor can build a Gate, forming an artificial Lagrange Jump (connected to the one in Jupiter's orbit).

Sounds great.

Operation Bucket Drop ?

Operation Slam Dunk? Operation Savage Rabbit?

Perhaps operations with Penetrators should be named after Porn Stars?

Minerva has thirty-one moons, one of them... (ahem!)... nearly as big as Earth!

Four more Mountains launched (making sixteen in total), and again our on-hand stock of repair parts drops like a paralyzed pigeon.

I think we'll halt the construction of Tenders right about here... we've launched thirty-six of them of various types in the past few years.

The Mountains have a huge hangar deck - 50% larger than that of a Fleet Carrier - so they can act as Tender to almost any sort of craft.

OK, I might have gone a bit overboard with the fuel tanks on the next-gen Gate II Construction Ship.

The 1000 AU trip out to Minerva (126 billion km away) doesn't even use up 10% of the ship's fuel.

What shall we name the planet-sized moon of Minerva?

Name it Glaux after Minerva's little owl?

Ohhh you used SM mode to increase the moon size, makes sense I was a bit confused about that (this is what happens when you don't carefully read every post :D )

A dirty bit of cheating, agreed.

I figured we might as well explore the new game features, though.

We've built enough Penetrators to equip three Fighter squadrons, and technically we could go right now.

I think we'll wait a month or two and build some reloads for the Fighters, though.

Meanwhile, I'll start building a jump gate into the Lalande 21185 star system, to allow our Tugs and Assault Stations access to the system.

LOL, the best excuse to watch a bunch of pr0n ever. "It's research!"
